Why do goods/people move from place to place?Spatial interaction is the flow of products, people, services, or information among places, in response to localized supply and demand.
12. Primary questions of diffusion
What is being carried?
How are things carried across space? Who or
what is the carrier?
What kinds of things get in the way?
29. How do I understand Diffusion?
• Acculturation
Acculturation – when smaller/weaker groups take on traits of
the larger/dominant culture. Can be 2-way process – e.g.
Aztecs acculturated into Spanish culture, but some Aztec traits
remained and became Spanish culture.
• Assimilation
Assimilation – the adoption of cultural elements can be so
complete that two cultures become indistinguishable – e.g. –
jeans being worn here in the Czech Republic

With a hub-and-spoke network, Alitalia flies planes from a large number of places into hub airports at Milan and Rome within a short period of time and then a short time later sends the planes to another set of places.
In principle, travelers originating in relatively small towns can reach a wide variety of destinations by changing planes at a hub airport.
Friction of distance has been reduced in many aspects of life with improved transportation and communication infrastructures (SPACE TIME COMPRESSION or TIME-SPACE CONVERGENCE)
Time–space compression (also known as space–time compression and time–space distantiation), articulated in 1989 by geographer David Harvey in The Condition of Postmodernity, it refers to anything that impacts the time and space.
Transportation improvements have shrunk the world.
In 1492, Christopher Columbus took nearly 900 hours (37
days) to sail across the Atlantic Ocean.
In 1927, Charles Lindbergh was the first to fly nonstop across the Atlantic, taking 33.5 hours.
In 1962, John Glenn, the first American to orbit in space, crossed above the Atlantic in about ½ hour and circled the globe three times in 5 hours.
How STC is related with globalization?
Distance decay is a geographical term which describes the effect of distance on cultural or spatial interactions. The distance decay effect states that the interaction between two locales declines as the distance between them increases. Once the distance is outside of the two locales' activity space, their interactions begin to decrease.
The effects of distance on interaction, generally the greater the distance the less interaction simply put: the farther one is from the hearth (origin) of the cultural trait, the less likely they are to be effected by it.
The spread of characteristics from a central node or a hearth through various means. 2. Expansion diffusion can be separated into three parts of diffusion: hierarchical, contagious, and stimulus diffusion. It is connected to other types of diffusion that were listed above. 3. Example: A contagious diffusion came from expansion diffusion before it was contagious.

Definition: The idea that a phenomenon spreads as a result of a group, usually the social elite, spreading the ideas or patterns in a society. 2. Elite members may be political leaders, entertainment leaders, or sports stars. Elite members of a society often start clothing trends. 3. Example: When a sports star wears a certain outfit or uses a certain gel that becomes a fashion, is hierarchical diffusion.
Some of Ford Motor Company’s top executives are organized by world regions, according to where the company sells most of its vehicles.

Definition: Usually associated with the spread of disease, often rapid. 2. Contagious diseases such as influenza have motivated physicians around the world to find a cure for viral infections. Also, people observe items on the internet easily, and can obtain information instantaneously. 3. Example: A Live event on the Internet, where people can directly experience something happening, is a form of contagious diffusion.
