Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in
Boston, Massachusetts.
He was the son of Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins
Poe and actor David Poe, Jr.
His parents died when he was young.
He was taken in by John and Frances Allan.

He went to the University of Virginia for a short
period and briefly attempted a military career.
He joined the army on May 27, 1827.
Poe served in the army under the name Edgar A.
Perry.
After his brother's death, Poe began more earnest
attempts to start his career as a writer.
The Allan’s were from Scotland.

Poe’s first literary work was the Raven.
Poe was also a critic.
He owned the Broadway Journal after being the
editor of the magazine.
America was the most influenced by Poe’s work.
7. Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe
Virginia Clemm was Poe’s wife and also his
cousin.
They got married in Richmond.
She was born on August 22, 1822.
Virginia was only 13 and Poe was 27 when
they got married.
She died January 30, 1947 because she had
tuberculosis.
9. Poe’s Death
Poe died on October 7, 1849 in Baltimore
Maryland.
The cause of Poe’s death has never been
determined but many say it was attributed to
alcohol, brain congestion, cholera, drugs,
heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis,
and other agents.
