A trial denture is defined as a
prelimenary arrangement of teeth that
has been prepared for placement into
patient’s mouth to evaluate esthetics
and maxillomandibular relationship.

Objectives of try-in:
1.To verify the maxillomandibular records
which were made without teeth.
2.To check for acceptance of established
vertical dimension.
3.To determine if position of teeth and denture
base are compatible with surrounding oral
tissues.
4.To evaluate arrangement for esthetic
requirements.

Steps during try-in
1.Check for adaptation of base plate
2.Check for occlusion
3.Evaluate vertical height
4.Evaluation of polished surface.
Before the procudure is carried out in the
patients mouth a prelimenary evaluation on
the articulator is completed.

Evaluation in mouth
1.Evaluation of trial denture base
Check extensions.
Check retention- resistance to forces acting
against path of insertion.
Stability- denture should be steady, firm,
constant in relation to denture bearing areas.
Support- should withstand forces acting along
the path of insertion.
Esthetic evaluation.

Evaluation in mouth (cont’d)
2. Evaluation of lip and cheek support
Incisal third of teeth should be visible at rest (low
lip line)
Middle third should be visible during smiling.
(high lip line)
Check for labial/buccal fullness.

3. Evaluation of occlusal plane
Anterior part of the maxillary occlusal plane
should be parallel to inter-pupillary line.
Posterior occlusal plane should be parallel to the
Camper’s plane
Mandibular occlusal plane is placed at the level
of the top 1/3rd
of the reteromolar pad.

4. Evaluation of vertical height
Physiologic rest position:
Silverman’s closest speaking space
Tactile sensation
phonetics

5. Evaluation of centric relation
Patient is guided into centric relation and teeth
are viewed for confirmation of centric occlusion.
