Rivers and Reservoirs are an important part of Integrated Water Resources Management IWRM: -Water Quality / Pollution ? -Water quality in MINING and HYDRO FRACKING sites? -Water Supply / Shortages? -Flood Control? -Water Use ?( industrial, municipal & agricultural)

Monitoring of quality of Surface Water
Resources.
The water quality of a stream, a watershed, or
a large river system can be enhanced only by
collecting good information about current
conditions. That information is the foundation
of actions and measures to reach or maintain
a high water quality.
• Monitoring is necessary to ensure whether protection and restoration
measures are working.
• Long-term data collection is critical to identify trends or patterns. Water
quality can constantly change— during the day, from day to day, from
season to season, and from year to year.
• Protect drinking water resources
• Monitoring of pollution accidents of rivers ( TOC, COD )

INTRODUCTION

Why do we need Water FLOW and LEVEL measurement ?
The quantity of stream-flow is an important factor in determining water quality and, thus, in interpreting water-quality data. The potential effects of contaminants on drinking-water supplies and aquatic habitats depend largely on the amount of water flowing in streams.
-Flood and Flash Flood: EARLY WARNINGS by SMS / e-mail.
-Measurement Stations with REAL TIME data transmission.
-Parameters are : Flow ( m³/s), Level (m), Rain (m3/m²).
-Data are available on the WEB.
-Discharge data also help with interpretation of water-quality data. ( f ex.: higher turbidity could come together with high or very high flow) Pollution = Concentration * Quantity
INTRODUCTION
49. 54
Continuous and automatic Water Quality Monitoring.
•Monitoring stations continuously measure dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, specific conductance (TDS ; salinity), turbidity, suspended solids, algae, NO3, NO2, NH4, PO4, TOC, COD, BOD.
•These parameters are good indicators of river water quality and the effectiveness of upstream wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operations.
•Polluters can be identified by long term 24/7 measurements
•Modern Analytical Equipment is highly sensitive. PPM / PPB
Is dilution the solution for pollution ?
INTRODUCTION
52. 57
The heart of every monitoring solution is the sensors ! The sensor quality determines the long term success of the installation and the TRUE COST of DATA. How to define : „Quality“ ? Very high accuracy & repeatability. Anti-fouling precautions Low sensor drift – long cal intervals Unique rugged and durable design Effective Integrated Cleaning
Quality Sensors reduce cost for maintenance, cleaning and calibrations

Whenever a SENSOR is NOT available we need to use an ANALYZER XYLEM has Analyzers for: NH4 NO3/NO2 TOC(heated persulfate) COD(cr) PO4 TP Analyzers are optimized for:
•Short measurement intervals
•Low reagent consumption
•Low maintenance
•Automatic calibration
ANALYZER – Continuous Analysis in River Monitoring Stations
71. 76
TOC ONLINE with:
9210 p Analyzer heated persulfate oxidation
will oxidize it all, for most accurate results and regulatory compliance.
ANALYZER - TOC
In 40 CFR 133.104 the U.S. EPA allows to substitute TOC analysis for BOD5 monitoring, when a long-term correlation has been demonstrated. Gains in precision, economy, efficiency and accuracy are associated with TOC measurement.
72. 77
The OI TOC analyzer 9210 P
continuously monitors the sample stream, determines, and reports the TOC concentration.
It output signals are sent to a data logger for continuous storage of TOC data
Set alarms for high TOC levels are detected and SMS alarm messages are instantly created

ANALYZER – Ammonium – Nitrate - Phosphate
74. 79
WTW Phosphate Analyzer P 700 IQ is based on the photometric ”yellow” method ( Molybdate- vanadate). It can be mounted outdoor and is famous for an extremely low reagent consumption.
Phosphorus compounds are considered to be the limiting nutrients in most waters. An increase in their concentration results directly in increasing eutrophication of the water

How does a “MONITORING STATION” look like ?
DEPENDS:
WHERE to measure? On a river bank ? In the middle of a reservoir? Under a bridge ? On a boat ? On a van ?
WHAT PARAMETER to measure ? Some, such as turbidity or DO can be better measured directly in the river, flow and level have to be. For others, pumping water into a cabinet might be better.
Do we need to PROTECT the equipment against theft and vandalism ?
Do we need POWER SUPPLY, or do we have mains connection ?
Do we need WIRELESS DATA TRANSMISSION ( GSM, Radio, Satellite) ?

An automatic monitoring site may consist of
a land-based, lockable box, where river water
is continuously pumped into.
A pump as well as mains
power and a concrete
foundation are needed.
A fence can protect from
vandalism.
