Wright - Creating a song and a dance: creative induction for a creative faculty
1. Creating a song and a dance: creative induction for a creative faculty
John Wright, University of Glamorgan, jwright2@glam.ac.uk
The University of Glamorgan’s ‘Cardiff School of Cultural & Creative Industries’ is
located in a bespoke modern facility ‘The ATRiuM’ in the centre of Cardiff. The
dedicated library at the ATRiuM provides a fully integrated library, media and IT
service including the provision of a wide range of portable media equipment. We have
developed (and continue to develop) an hour-long induction session which we deliver
on 8 occasions during Fresher’s Week in a theatre setting to groups of 80-100 students.
Each session is subject specific in terms of content according to the specific 1st year
group. We provide an overview of the Library, ICT and Media Services within the
Faculty under the broad heading ‘Supporting you at ATRiuM’. In order to try and
better engage with students who are following degree programmes which are creative
in nature, we have used a range of creative elements in delivering our key messages.
This includes the use of film, role-play, ‘prezi’ presentations, and the performance of
a ‘library song’ on the guitar. We have made a conscious effort with these sessions
not to ‘overload’ on information and to adopt a light approach. This TeachMeet
presentation provides a snapshot of the creative delivery methods included within
these sessions, including an abridged version of the ‘library song’.
