s healthcare systems evolve to meet the demands
Aof an ever-changing landscape, Chief Nursing
Officers (CNOs) play an increasingly important
role in driving change and improving patient outcomes.
CNOs are senior executives who oversee nursing
operations, clinical practice and patient care within
healthcare organizations. Their unique perspective,
experience and expertise enable them to identify
opportunities for innovation and lead transformational
change.
One of the ways CNOs are bringing change to the world of
healthcare is by advocating for evidence-based practice.
They work closely with interdisciplinary teams to ensure
that patient care is guided by the best available evidence,
while also considering the unique needs and preferences of
individual patients. CNOs are also involved in developing
policies and procedures that promote the use of the
evidence-based practice, and they provide education and
training to ensure that healthcare providers are equipped
with the knowledge and skills they need to deliver high-
quality care.
Another key area where CNOs are driving change is
through the implementation of technology and digital health
solutions. As healthcare systems become increasingly
reliant on technology, CNOs are playing a critical role in
ensuring that new innovations are implemented safely and
effectively. They are working to develop new systems and
processes that improve patient outcomes, such as telehealth
and remote patient monitoring, while also ensuring that
patient privacy and confidentiality are protected.
CNOs are also committed to promoting diversity, equity
and inclusion within the nursing profession. They recognize
that a diverse workforce is essential for providing culturally
competent care and improving health outcomes for all
patients. CNOs are working to recruit and retain nurses
from underrepresented groups, providing mentorship and
professional development opportunities, and creating
inclusive work environments where all nurses can thrive.
In conclusion, Chief Nursing Officers are bringing change
to the world of healthcare through leadership and
innovation. Through their efforts, CNOs are improving
patient outcomes and transforming healthcare for the better.

An Empathetic Thoughtful Leader Facilitating
C.A.R.E—Courtesy, Attitude, Respect and Enthusiasm
Nursing leadership is
more than a career, it’s a
lifestyle and truly never
turns off. If it’s who you
are to the core, this is the
appropriate field for you.
Do not be afraid to fail
and always be vulnerable
and genuine to those
who you’re privileged to
serve. It’s the most
rewarding career to serve
others and to touch so
many pa ents and
families through the
ripple impact of
leadership.
Success in every field depends on leadership. Great
leaders combine inspiration, communication, insight
and direction to bring about effective management of
organizations. When it comes to nursing, those characteris-
tics are particularly crucial.
Team members who receive support find it easier to manage
the pressures that arise from everyday challenges. Good
leaders help in dealing with whatever disruptive factors that
might cause emotional weariness and poor teamwork.
Misti Foust-Cofield, Vice President and Chief Nursing
Officer at Reid Health in Richmond, Ind., has a wealth of
expertise in a variety of nursing positions, including critical
care. She has spearheaded various staff initiatives to
enhance culture and teamwork, with a particular emphasis
on and involvement in improving the patient experience.
Foust-Cofield holds a master's degree in healthcare
administration from Franklin University and an accelerated
BSN in nursing from Jacksonville University. She resides in
Richmond but is originally from Preble County, Ohio,
which sits on the other side of the state line, just a few miles
away.

COVER STORY
Misti Foust-Cofield
Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer
Reid Health
The following is an interview between Foust-Cofield and
Insights Care, which discusses leadership, the healthcare
sector, and her background in the field.
Misti, tell us about yourself and your professional
journey so far.
I had the privilege of starting my own clinical journey as a
SICU/Neuro ICU nurse at Halifax Medical Centre in
Daytona Beach, Fla. We served as a Level 2 Trauma Centre
for Daytona and many surrounding communities, caring for
post-trauma patients and their families in the area.
About 14 years ago, I transitioned “home” to Reid. I came
back to Reid as a bedside Open Heart Recovery Nurse and
was blessed to work with many great physicians and
colleagues. I moved through a variety of growth
opportunities including Manager of CCU, Inpatient
Director of Nursing, and eventually into the role of CNO.
Please tell us about Reid Health and its inception story.
Reid Health offers nationally recognized quality and
technology with a personal touch that sets us apart. Our
growing team is known for going the extra mile to make
sure our patients and families are made to feel as
comfortable and cherished as possible when they find
themselves in need of our services — on the main campus
or at one of numerous satellite facilities in the eight-county
region of Indiana and Ohio that we serve.
We opened as Reid Memorial Hospital in 1905. Daniel G.
Reid, an industrialist originally from Richmond, financed
the construction. The hospital name was in memory of
Reid's wife, Ella, and their son, Frank, who both died before
the turn of the century. In 1992, we changed our name to
Reid Hospital and Health Care Services to reflect our
growth into much more than an inpatient hospital. In 2015,
we again changed our name, this time to Reid Health.
After almost 100 years at our original location, it became
obvious the most cost-efficient and quality-driven option for
continued growth would be a new facility. In September
2004, we broke ground at our new location on about 100
acres two miles north of our old home. We completed the
move in September 2008, when the inpatient hospital
opened its doors. Today, our health system includes a 271-
bed hospital on our main campus and numerous satellite
locations in the region of Eastern Indiana and Western Ohio
that we serve. Reid's service area is home to about 280,000
people and includes six Indiana and two Ohio counties.
We are accredited by the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation
Program (HFAP), the Indiana State Department of Health,
Medicare/Medicaid, American Association of Blood Banks
and the American College of Surgeons Community Cancer
Program.
What are the key products and services of the
organization?
In addition to our inpatient hospital in Richmond, Ind., Reid
Health offers primary care and several specialty services at
locations throughout our eight-county service area.
Key service lines include Heart & Vascular, where our
providers have experience with the Watchman and TAVR
procedures and cutting-edge treatment options to address
conditions such as A Fib (Watchman) and aortic stenosis
(TAVR). We also have an excellent cardiothoracic program
to keep our community receiving open heart surgery close
to home.
Other services include MSK, where we have made a
particular commitment and investment in technology,
including Mako and Mazor robotic systems for joint
replacement and minimally invasive spine surgeries;
Obstetrics and Gynecology services; Emergency Services;
Surgical Services and Oncology.
We’ve been rounding to
simply acknowledge the
hard work of our teams.
They’ve been so
commi ed to our
community, and we are
indebted for the service
and amazing care they
con nue to render.
Also, in 2019, we contracted with Wayne County, Ind., to
begin offering ambulance services in one section of the
county. Since then, we have grown to offer those same
services to nearly all of Wayne County, as well as all of
Union County in Indiana, and now have seven ambulances
in our fleet.
What are the core values of Reid Health? How are you
driving the organization to achieve its mission and
vision?
In April 2021, we announced new mission, vision, and
value statements to help govern decision-making over the
coming years.
Mission: To lead our communities to well-being, one person
at a time
Vision: Healthier people, thriving communities, trusted
partner
Values: Excellence, Empathy, Integrity, Accountability
Those statements sum up our culture and give our team
members a clear understanding of what’s important to us as
an organization as we work to serve the needs of our
patients and communities. For our patients and their
families, the statements represent the level of care they
should expect to receive from us.
In your opinion, what are the current challenges in the
nursing industry? How do you aspire to turn them into
opportunities under your leadership?
We’re doing our best to reimagine nursing and nursing
leadership. We’re partnering to increase our workforce
pipeline and are focused on restoring the passion in our
workforce and team members.
We’re focusing greatly on the mental health and well-being
of our clinicians and doing our best to enhance care
delivery by leveraging technology and decreasing the stress
on our bedside teams.
Amongst the heavy workflow, how do you ensure that
your organization allows its staff to maintain a healthy
work-life balance?
Our teams have been incredibly resilient and have been so
courageous during the pandemic to relentlessly serve our
community. We’re acknowledging the importance of work-
life balance by offering many of our meetings and
communication through social media platforms and virtual
options. This allows our teams to spend more time with
their families.
We’ve placed tremendous focus on the mental health and
well-being of our bedside teams, offering EAP services and
a Code Lavender support team. We’ve also undertaken a
remodel of all staff breakrooms to develop tranquil, serene
environments that our teams can use to take a mid-shift
break that’s not in a sterile “hospital-like” environment. We
recently opened a childcare center to help ease the burden
of finding childcare. This has been wildly successful, so
much so we have a wait list for openings at the center.
We’ve been rounding to simply acknowledge the hard work
of our teams. They’ve been so committed to our
community, and we are indebted for the service and
amazing care they continue to render.
Could you share with us any moment or event that
impacted your professional life profoundly?
I’ve been blessed with many meaningful moments
throughout my nursing journey. I’ve cared for a number of
patients and families who have left a lasting impression on
my heart and mind.
One patient who I resuscitated during a cardiac arrest still
stays in touch, and her children and grandchildren know
me. They typically reach out on the anniversary of our
encounter and send me words of kindness and appreciation.
It’s that type of appreciation that fills my bucket, and I’m
the one being truly blessed.
As an experienced leader, what advice would you like to
give to aspiring entrepreneurs and enthusiasts who wish
to venture into the competitive industry that you are
serving?
I would highly recommend anyone considering this career
to do it! Do it with all your heart, mind and soul. I would
encourage others to be fearless and relentless to pursue your
passion to serve others. This work is tough and can be
stressful for not only the leader but their family.
Nursing leadership is more than a career, it’s a lifestyle and
truly never turns off. If it’s who you are to the core, this is
the appropriate field for you. Do not be afraid to fail and
always be vulnerable and genuine to those who you’re

others and to touch so many patients and families through
the ripple impact of leadership.
What are the future goals of the organization? How does
it envision scaling up its operations to reach 2022 and
beyond?
We’re in the middle of an expansion that includes new
facilities in key communities aimed at bringing more
services and specialty care providers closer to the patients
we serve.
As part of that growth, we’re prioritizing technology,
seeking to make state-of-the-art equipment and systems
available to those who entrust us with their care. That
includes a first-of-its-kind project that began this year to
upgrade inpatient rooms at our hospital to add smart boards
and other features that are directly integrated with Epic, our
electronic medical records-keeping system.
The project will allow us to use our recently
purchased patient beds and a new call light
system to their fullest capabilities, which will
enhance patient care and consolidate work
for bedside staff.
Give us a few of your awards or
recognition that accurately
highlight your company’s position
in the market.
During my time as a CNO, my
team worked together to achieve
several accreditations,
certifications, and other
recognitions from national
organizations that reflect our high-
quality care, including:
Ÿ Verification as a Level 3 trauma
center for our emergency rooms in
Richmond and Connersville, Ind.
Ÿ Certification as a Primary Stroke
Center from the Healthcare Facilities
Accreditation Program (HFAP)
Ÿ Accreditation for the Reid Health Breast
Center
Ÿ Accreditation for our Urgent Care locations in
Richmond, Connersville and Eaton, Ohio
Ÿ American Heart Association’s Get with the
Guidelines—Stroke Gold Plus award for best practices in
stroke care
Ÿ Accreditation for the Reid Health Care Pavilion
Ÿ Accreditation for our Cardiac and Pulmonary
Rehabilitation Programs in Richmond and Connersville
In addition, Reid Health was named one of America’s Best
Midsize Employers by Forbes and received the 2022
Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades.

In an interview with Insights Care, Kate shared valuable
facts that showcase her professional tenure in the healthcare
niche.
Below are the excerpts from the interview:
Kindly tell us the source of inspiration. What led you to
serve the healthcare industry?
During my early teens, I adored my grandmother, who was
suffering from Alzheimer's. Looking after her for several
weeks gave me a sense of empowerment as I added value to
her care. That is when I decided to pursue the field of
nursing.
As my grandfather worked in the Houses of Parliament,
training at St Thomas' Hospital London, which overlooked
Big Ben, seemed like a perfect place to begin my nurse
training. From the very moment, I stepped foot inside the
wards, I felt proud to be a nurse.
At NMC Healthcare, we are committed to providing

NMC Healthcare at a Glance
18| January 2023|www.insightscare.com
Brief us about yourself and shed some light on your
journey and studies as a Chief Nursing Officer.
I have never really sought a promotion in my nursing
career. However, I have enjoyed my roles. The more nurses
that I manage, the more I feel responsible for supporting
them to reach their potential, strive towards the highest
quality care and enjoy what they do.
What role do compassion and nurse-patient
communication play in providing quality care for
patients?
When I speak to young nurses today, I am often called to
give them simple tips on what it takes to be a good nurse.
Of course, you need to be well-trained and competent in
what you do. Still, with kindness and common sense added
in, you are bound to make a massive difference in the
quality of care of your patients.
Considering that you are an enthusiast in the nursing
field, what nursing initiatives are you actively involved
in?
Develop a learning culture; Use nurse-process reviews to
learn from serious incidents and near misses; Introduce
Every Ready Governance, Comprehensive Unit-based
Safety Programme, Pathway to Excellence and Work
towards Magnet.
What are some of the challenges you face when
conducting nursing operations, and how do you turn
them into opportunities for growth?
We have a global challenge regarding nurse recruitment and
retention. This is a widely held concern for healthcare
providers all over the world.
To meet the needs of our future patients, we need to
remodel how nursing care is delivered. For example,
instead of calculating the number of nurses to patients in a
ratio setting, we need to turn this upside down and consider
what every individual needs and who is best placed to
provide this care. This cannot only mean registered and
licensed nurses – there are not enough of us – but this could
include other trained and competent healthcare workers.
Please share with us some nursing insights you would
like other nurses to know.
Being a nurse is a privilege. We are honoured to be invited
into our patients' most personal and private world and
allowed to offer what we can to make life easier, comforted
and less painful.
How do you envision scaling your services and
operations in 2023 and beyond?
Every patient has the right to expect safe, caring and
high-quality care. We are here to meet the needs of our
patients and will stop at nothing to be able to deliver this.
Ÿ Develop constructive and supportive relationships
to benefit the whole team
Ÿ Encourage a safe work culture to provide support,
build resilience and offer debriefing opportunities
COMMUNICATION:
Ÿ Be active listeners who are receptive to others
and who listen with their heart
Ÿ Be skilled at mediation in demanding
situations–be the "go-to" person when others are
struggling with communication in challenging
situations of potential or actual conflict
Ÿ Communicate clearly and concisely with patients,
families and colleagues, employing unambiguous
terminology
COMPASSION:
Ÿ Be open, warm, kind, caring, and gentle
Ÿ Model empathy and demonstrate a caring
attitude to all patients and their families
Ÿ Connect sensitively with a good understanding of
patients' and families' needs
Ÿ Assure the comfort and confidence of patients
and families
Ÿ Demonstrate a deep understanding of an
individualized patient experience
Ÿ Remain sensitive to the needs of others in all
circumstances
Ÿ Provide a nurturing and caring atmosphere for all
professional colleagues

Chief Nursing
The Role of
Officers
in Advancing the
Healthcare
Industry
ccording to Advancing Health, nursing has a
Asignificant role in healthcare reform and the
requirements for an affordable, secure, high-
quality, patient-centered healthcare system. From the
highest person, the Chief Nursing officer, to the staff nurse,
nurses must understand how nursing practice must
drastically change to provide the expected level of quality
care to achieve these outcomes and actively participate in
the change.
With a renewed emphasis on patient-centered care, care
coordination, data analytics and quality improvement, these
modifications will necessitate a new or enhanced skill set in
wellness and population care. At the individual or system
level, transformation and the necessary changes will not be
simple. Individually, it necessitates assessing one's
knowledge, abilities and attitudes to determine whether or
not they position you to contribute to the upcoming change
or to resist it.
It necessitates an examination of the organization's mission,
goals, partnerships, procedures, leadership, and other
essential components at the organizational level before
20| January 2023|www.insightscare.com
Exclusive Insights
reorganizing them, thereby causing disruptions to the status
quo.
Let's go over the developments and learn more about them!
Wellness and Prevention
We must move away from a healthcare system that focuses
on illness and toward wellness and prevention. As a result,
wellness and preventive-focused evaluations, fitness and
health education programs, and programs to address the
social or environmental causes of preventable disease
conditions and care issues must be given the same
importance as providers' disease-focused clinical
intervention. What does this entail in the context of actual
orthopedic practice? It means addressing "upstream" factors
to prevent or minimize musculoskeletal health issues at the
population health level.
From a wellness perspective, a gait analysis, screening for
osteoporosis, and a plan to prevent or reduce risk to prevent
subsequent falls and potential fractures would all be
implemented. The patient might also be referred to a Matter
of Balance program, which would provide the patient with
strategies to reduce falling and increase strength and
balance.
Patient and Family Focused Care
One more important attribute of the changed medical care
framework should be a faithful spotlight on the patient. If
patients and families are to take charge of their health, they
must receive care focused on them and their families rather
than the providers.
Again, nurses are well-suited for this position because they
have always embraced a holistic approach to care that
includes patients, families and communities and empowers
patients to take responsibility for their health and disease
management.
Nurses can work with patients to help them achieve their
goals by providing education and coaching with an eye
toward the outcomes reported by patients. A necessary skill
is using action planning and motivational interviewing to
help patients change their behavior.
Care Coordination
The patient-centered continuum of care, first proposed in
1984, is a system that guides and follows individuals over
time through a seamless array of health, mental health and
social services at all levels and intensities of care.
Continuous coordination is essential to prevent or minimize
fragmentation because the continuum includes services
from health to illness, from birth to death, and from various
organizations, providers and services.
All patients require care coordination because it bridges the
disjointed health system and makes it more manageable and
coherent, which benefits both the patient and the provider.
Because it has been confirmed that transitions represent
high-risk periods for safety issues and adverse outcomes
due to a lack of continuity of care, this type of care, referred
to as transitional care, has been a significant focus.
Focus on Getting Better Results and Outcomes
Nurses in the new healthcare system will need to be able to
collect and track clinical and financial data across settings
and over time. Key metrics need to be followed at the
individual and population levels. It provides the necessary
information to comprehend the challenges facing each
patient.
To achieve the triple aim, we will need to keep track of
overtime of outcomes related to psychosocial status,
behavior change, clinical and health status, satisfaction,
quality of life, productivity, and cost. Predictive modeling
employs these data to stratify the population based on the
disease state or risk profile. Through stratification, health
promotion, wellness and care will be provided to those at
no or low risk.
In conclusion,
Undeniably, nurses are well-positioned to assume
responsibilities that will advance health, enhance care, and
increase value. However, it will necessitate new approaches
to thought and practice.
“The time has come for nursing, at the heart of patient care,
to take the lead in the revolution to make healthcare more
patient-centered and quality-driven," reads the statement.
"Nurses can no longer take a back seat." The vital question
to ask here is, "Are you ready?"

Instilling Hope, Delivering Quality Care!
magine an elderly patient undergoing treatment in a
Ihealthcare setting who has no nearby family and
struggles with mobility. Administering the patient's
medications is critical, along with the numerous health
technicalities that are involved.
But is that all the patient is asking for?
Definite standard care in this situation is of utmost
importance, but compassion, companionship, and other
skills outside the technical realm can create wonders to
improve the quality of a patient’s life.
This has made nurses uniquely position themselves in the
healthcare niche, wherein their direct contact with patients
builds relationships and plays a critical role in patients’
health and satisfaction.
And talking about this unique blend of technical knowledge
and an empathetic person-centered approach, one person
that ticks the list righteously is Michelle Wallace.
Throughout her decade-long experience in the Grady
Health System, Michelle has been committed to delivering
quality care with humanity, compassion and kindness.
In order to learn about how Michelle stands by these values
and transforms care, kindly delve into her insightful
interview.
What was your inspiration behind venturing into the
healthcare sector?
My greatest inspiration for entering the healthcare field was
the opportunity to serve others. My father is retired Army,
and my grandfather is a retired police officer. Serving has
always been an integral part of what our family does.
Please tell us about your journey, highlighting your
contribution to Grady Health System's success.
In 2012, I became the Emergency Department leader, just
as Grady began its transformation. Throughout the years, I
have had the privilege to work with additional departments,
both in a nursing capacity and non-nursing. This
system-level view has enabled me to build relationships
with other key leaders and collaborate to ensure Grady's
staff's success while continuously improving patient
outcomes.
Can you elaborate upon the core values on which Grady
Health System is built and what the mission of the
company is?
Grady's true north is to ensure safety, anticipate needs, and
exceed expectations. We are committed to delivering
quality care with humanity, compassion and kindness – and
arms open wide to everyone in the community. Our core
values are to be patient-centered, be safe, serve others with
excellence, do right and do good. At Grady, we live these
values every day.
What are the key products and services of your hospital
and how has it enabled care for the patients?
Grady Health System is one of the largest safety net health
systems in the United States. Grady consists of the 953-bed

HIV/AIDS outpatient clinics in the country. Grady is one of
an elite group of hospitals to earn the Baby-Friendly USA
international recognition as a Baby-Friendly Designated
birth facility.
How do you enable patient-centric care with specific
operations that the hospital runs on?
One of our core values is providing patient-centered care.
This is instilled in all Grady employees from day one. As a
safety net hospital, we provide the highest quality care to all
patients, no matter their circumstances, treating everyone
with dignity and respect. We maintain open lines of
communication with our patients to ensure they understand
what’s happening every step of the way and trust us to take
care of them.
What are some of the challenges that you face and the
most important lessons that you have learned in your
professional journey so far.
I've learned that healthcare is a constant evolution. The last
2 ½ years have underscored that even more, as frontline
workers and hospital leaders have had to adjust and figure
out how to manage the COVID-19 pandemic. I’ve learned
the importance of resiliency and overcoming the adversities
we face daily in healthcare. But most importantly, I’ve
learned that if your team’s primary focus is the overall
health and well-being of patients and their families, then
you’re doing the right thing.
Being an experienced leader, what is your intuitive
advice for budding youngsters venturing into
healthcare.
My advice to those entering healthcare is always to be open
to learning. Be humble enough to know when you don’t
know – and humble enough to know when you need to ask
for help. As they grow into leadership roles, they should
understand the importance of taking care of their frontline
team. If you have the team’s best interest at heart and take
care of them, they’ll be able to better care for patients.
Apart from your journey, how do you envision further
strengthening Grady Health System’s stronghold in
2022 and beyond?
Truly focusing on the right things – our people and our
patients. If we view decisions through that lens, we don’t
make wrong decisions. In addition, as we continue to move
through the pandemic, nursing and patient care are at a
crossroads. Key decisions will be made that will impact the
trajectory of patient care.
As a safety net hospital,
we provide the highest
quality care to all patients,
no ma er their circumstances,
treating everyone with dignity
and respect.

strong advocate for nurse empowerment and
Aactively involved on platforms locally, regionally
and globally, Siân Collier-Jones has proven
herself as a transformational healthcare leader. Sitting as the
Chief Nursing Officer of Al-Futtaim Health, she is one of
the most influential healthcare executives to know.
Al Futtaim has made its mark as a key player within the
healthcare industry. Led by a dynamic team of industry
experts, this year saw the managing director, Dr Haidar Al
Yousef winning CEO of the year, and Chief Nursing Officer
Siân Collier-Jones receiving the outstanding leadership
award demonstrating the force behind the name.
After securing the remarkable achievement of being the first
primary healthcare chain in the UAE to be awarded
international accreditation, Al-Futtaim Health went on to
partner with the American Heart Association (AHA) and
launch an international training center, dedicated to clinical
education & life support training. With a solid foundation in
the UAE, Al-Futtaim Health now has a growing number of
exciting projects across the GCC region.
In an exclusive interview with Insights Care Let us know
more about Siân’s journey in reshaping healthcare.
Kindly tell us your source of inspiration, what led you to
the healthcare industry?
At the age of 18, I accepted a healthcare assistant position
at a local hospital, this role shaped the entire trajectory of
my career. Based on a geriatric rehabilitation unit, my
duties were far from glamorous, but it taught me the
importance of compassionate care. I felt like I made a
difference and quickly realized the endless opportunities
within healthcare to contribute to care needs. The drive for
empathetic, patient centric care continues to motivate me to
this day.
Can you shed some light on your career journey over
the years?
Originally from the UK, I trained and worked in the NHS
for 15 years before relocating to the Middle East. I have
passed through many roles in my career from staff nurse,
educator, clinical nurse specialist, senior advisor, and nurse
consultant. Each of these roles has positively contributed to
where I am today. I was CNO of several facilities and
groups in the region before being appointed as Chief
Nursing Officer of Al Futtaim Health, leading the nursing
functions across all brands and divisions of Al Futtaim.
What studies or skill development did it take for you to
become a Chief Nursing Officer?
This career has always pushed me to keep learning and I
have undertaken a balance of clinical, quality and
leadership development over the years. In addition to
nursing I studied public health, clinical education and
healthcare management which enabled me to have a more
holistic outlook on healthcare.
Quality is integral to my role so I felt it was important to
achieve chartered member status with CQP (UK’s
professional body for quality & auditing professionals) and
to secure NAHQ’s certified professional in healthcare
quality licensure (CPHQ-USA). My nursing administration
& leadership skills organically evolved over time and were
formally assessed when I was conferred as a certified global
nurse consultant (CGNC) by the International Council of
Nurses (ICN).

Can you elaborate on the core values and mission of Al-
Futtaim Health? How do you align the nursing services
to best serve the organization?
Al-Futtaim Health’s values are centered around 5 key
pillars: Excellence, Compassion, Innovation, Respect and
Ethical practices.
Being responsible for the creation and development of the
nursing structure, excellence was fundamental. I believe
excellence starts with a strong team culture, so nurturing &
developing the right culture within the nursing department
was critical to me. I ensured sustainable quality governance
structures were embedded within the department, through
dedicated roles, support & education.
Compassion is massively associated with nursing and is at
the heart of what we do. I am incredibly grateful to have
introduced the international DAISY awards to the
organization. DAISY is a patient nominated award to
recognize extraordinary nursing care and compassion. This
year we were honored to welcome the DAISY foundation
Co-founders, CEO and VP from the USA, to attend one of
our nursing award ceremonies.
Innovation is the value that also relates to our mission,
which is ‘to redefine the healthcare experience by
delivering high quality, smart and integrated care’. This is
one area where Al-Futtaim Health have been a pioneer in
the region by creating end-to-end digital solutions, and
nurses have been a key player in the care delivery of these
solutions.
Nurses’ roles are ever evolving, and the use of technology,
telemetry and assisted devises are now part of modern-day
nursing care. For example, we recently launched our
SmartDoc project, this technology uses a remote device
deployed & operated by specialist nurses. This project was
a huge success for the organization and was even awarded
platinum status at the 2022 Patient Safety Awards.
In what areas, in your opinion, does the regional health
system struggle when it comes to treating patients?
In any private healthcare system, fragmented care is a real
issue. It's essential to have a well-balanced healthcare
ecosystem that works seamlessly for continuous health
management. We live in ever-changing times, and the UAE
has demonstrated its enormous strength and forward-
thinking in this area. The pandemic saw instant responses
and initiatives from the entire healthcare spectrum, both
public and private. Al Futtaim Health was one of the first
private providers to partner with the DHA on pandemic
response initiatives, working together for population safety
in real-time. We rapidly established a large COVID-19 field
hospital and launched multiple response projects across
Dubai.
Considering that you are an enthusiast in the field of
nursing, what nursing initiatives are you actively
involved in?
I am a huge advocate of nurse empowerment and I believe
it’s important to constantly learn, share and contribute to
developing the nursing profession.
I have a passion for mentoring as it offers bidirectional
learning and development as well as a connection to the
next generation of nurse leaders. I am on several remote
mentorship platforms, most notably the global "Nursing
Now Challenge." I joined this movement after the success-
ful launch of the Nightingale Challenge, which I had the
pleasure of being a very small part of. I also sit as an
editorial board member of a healthcare journal, which
provides me the opportunity to keep up with the latest
research and practices. As a fellow of a government-
selected nurse leader task force and roundtable expert
panel, I can contribute to think tank policy development and
promote strategic initiatives within healthcare. I was
extremely humbled to have received an award earlier this
year for my contribution to healthcare.
Share with us some nursing insights or tips that you
would like nurses to know.
Never stop learning or growing. Nursing is such a versatile
career with many opportunities. Every role in healthcare is
important. Having worked across a spectrum of
designations from HCA to CNO, I can't emphasize enough
the importance of a systems mindset. Each role adds a
unique value, and we all need to work together for care to
be effective. Listening is how I learn so much from my
team; it's also part of our motto, "We Hear You." It is
important that you stay connected, as you move from the
bedside to the boardroom, it is easy to get consumed by
administration and lose connection with the wider
workforce. Maintaining communication and ensuring
psychological safety within your team is vital. In addition to
structured feedback, leadership rounds, nursing committees
and initiatives, I hold agenda free drop-in sessions monthly,
which helps keep dialogue open.
What are some of the challenges you face when
conducting nursing operations, and how do you turn
them into opportunities for growth?
I think the biggest challenge faced by any CNO is staff
retention or staffing numbers in general, as this impacts
skill mix planning and general operations. This is a global
issue everywhere and was recently intensified due to the
pandemic. The surge in operational demands made
everyone re-evaluate capacity planning. One thing that
nurses are renowned for is their ingenuity and flexibility, so
of course this has been turned into an opportunity for
growth!
We learned fast that with the right support, training and
framework in place, it was possible to create a more agile,
cross-functional workforce. Roles and responsibilities were
re-evaluated, and we introduced modified processes,
designations, or smart technology for greater utilization and
skill optimization. This in turn created new roles and
expanded opportunities for our nurses, with career and skill
progression that ultimately resulted in staff satisfaction.
In an ever-competitive global market, staff satisfaction and
self-development are vital components of growing any
workforce.

Shaping up Healthcare
in 2023
isparities, unsustainable costs, fragmentation,
Ddifficulties gaining access, and unfavourable
outcomes are some factors driving healthcare
transformation. The most pressing need for change was
brought about by shifting social and disease-type
demographics and concerns regarding cost and quality.
As a country, we have taken simple actions toward higher
standards and reduced costs for decades. However, caring
for and paying for patients with chronic health conditions is
a significant concern. As we move away from episodic,
provider-based, fee-for-service care and toward team-based,
patient-centered care across the continuum that provides
seamless, affordable and high-quality care, nurses can lead
and contribute to the transformative changes occurring in
healthcare.
These shifts necessitate a new or improved set of wellness
and population care knowledge, skills and attitudes, with a
renewed emphasis on patient-centered care, care
coordination, data analytics and quality improvement.
Transformative Insights

33| January 2023|www.insightscare.com
Let's look at some of the transformative changes
Nurse Shortage would Continue
Around the world, there are 28 million nurses, according to
the World Health Organization (WHO). However, that
number isn't sufficiently high for patient numbers and
needs. As a result, there is a global shortage of nurses, and
to meet the healthcare needs of all patients and their needs,
6 million more positions will need to be filled by 2030.
This number will online keep on ascending all through
2023 also. Many of the Gen X-er ages are close to
retirement age, Coronavirus hindered new likely medical
caretakers from acquiring training, and as medical caretaker
burnout increments, more medical attendants are leaving
the medical care field overall. The consequences of
Coronavirus and the worldwide nursing deficiency are felt
all through medical services and will continue being judged
for the following couple of years.
Driving Force for Change
With the changing driving force, nursing has brought many
changes in the medical field.
Waste: In the United States, 30 cents of each dollar spent on
medical care is wasted, costing $750 billion annually.
Inefficient care delivery, high administrative costs, services
that aren't needed, high prices, failures in prevention, and
fraud all contribute to this.
Quality: The U.S. wellbeing framework positions last or
close to last contrasted and six different countries like
Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, New
Zealand, and the Unified Real on five components of the
elite execution wellbeing framework: accessibility, fairness,
quality and healthy lives.
Hospitals in the United States were found to re-admit an
average of one-fifth of Medicare patients within 30 days of
discharge, despite the higher costs. According to reports,
25% of Medicare patients discharged to long-term care
facilities were re-admitted to the hospital within 30 days,
and the list is never-ending.
Changing Demographics
The need for change is also fueled by shifting social and
disease-type demographics among our citizens. The term
"the browning of America" was given by demographer
James Johnson to show that people of color now make up
most of the country's growing population. Access to health
coverage, which contributes to poorer health access and
outcomes and an unnecessary cost, is one area where people
of color face persistent and long-lasting health status
disparities.
In its annual National Healthcare Quality and Disparities
Report, the AHRQ has shown that when accessing
healthcare, racial and ethnic minorities and low-income
individuals face more obstacles and receive lower-quality
care. These facts emphasize the need for our system to be
changed.
Covering with the changing social socioeconomics is the
adjustment of illness-type socioeconomics since there is an
ascent in persistent sickness among Americans and
fundamentally so among more established Americans. An
estimated 133 million Americans are affected by chronic
disease, which includes heart disease, stroke, cancer, Type 2
diabetes, obesity, and arthritis. The leading cause of death
and disability is chronic disease. Chronic diseases are
among the most "common, expensive, and preventable"
health issues.
Healthcare Reform
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 was
ushered in by the continued skyrocketing of healthcare
costs, the less-than-impressive health status of the American
people, safety and quality issues within the healthcare
system, and growing concerns that price and quality issues
would intensify with changing demographics. And the fact
that there were 50 million Americans uninsured and 40
million underinsured in the United States.
Further developing worth signifies "staying away from
exorbitant slip-ups and readmissions, keeping patients solid,
compensating quality rather than amount, and making the
wellbeing data innovation foundation that empowers new
installment and conveyance models to work." We are
moving toward new reimbursement principles and payment
models for care thanks to the ACA and the CMS's authority
to implement value.
In conclusion,
Undeniably, nurses are well-positioned to assume
responsibilities that will advance health, enhance care, and
increase value. However, it will necessitate new approaches
to thought and practice. It is essential to shift your practice's
focus away from the disease episode of care and toward
promoting health and care across the continuum.

Susan Russell
Enhancing Healthcare, Facilitating Eternal Betterments
he nursing profession is both ancient and respected.
TIts history predates the development of human
civilization. The work of a nurse has always been
important, and it is reminiscent of great humanitarians like
Mother Teresa, who dedicated her entire life to serving
others and was awarded the Nobel Prize, and Florence
Nightingale, who was known as "the lady with the lamp."
Awarded for being a proponent for donation, innovation and
nurse/patient advocacy, Susan Russell, Chief Nursing and
Patient Safety Officer at Singing River Health System, is
an experienced healthcare executive with a demonstrated
history of working in the hospital and healthcare industry.
She specializes in hospital administration, nursing practice
and patient safety. Susan has expertise in the areas of
clinical operations and performance enhancement from her
work as a national presenter on topics of nurse leadership,
panelist, podcaster and consultant.
Susan Russell was also recognized among the Nurse Deck's
Top 10 Chief Nursing Executives who are transforming the
Healthcare sector and has received several statewide
recognitions as the Mississippi Nurse Association Nurse
Executive of the Year, and Lifetime Recognition for
contribution on behalf of Organ and Tissue. Most recently
she was appointed as a member of the board of directors for
the Mississippi Association of Nurse Leaders.
Let's dive in to learn about her contribution to Singing
River Health System!
With a Spark to Ameliorate Healthcare
Susan had a strong desire to make a positive, long-lasting
impact on the world from a young age. She wasn't as
interested in making money, but rather; she wanted her
professional career to make a difference to individuals and
the community.
In a sense, Susan began her personal journey at Singing
River Health System. She was born at the facility and chose
nursing as her career path with the intention to work in the
same facility and community she had lived in her entire life.
She shares, "My family has lived on the Mississippi Gulf
Coast since the 1700s, and I planned on building a life here
as well. It's just a beautiful place to live, work, and raise a
family."
The Symbol of Perpetual Excellence
Singing River Health System is a mission-driven, not-for-
profit healthcare provider for the Mississippi Gulf Coast
and surrounding areas. The system provides the highest
level of comprehensive care and has been recognized at the
national level for high-achieving facilities. Singing River is
one of South Mississippi's largest employers and was
instituted to provide the best possible care to the
community, in the community.
At each of its hospitals in Gulfport, Ocean Springs and
Pascagoula, Singing River Health System offers both
critical and acute medical treatments. The founding of
Singing River Health was made possible by Jackson County
community leaders who saw the value of providing its
citizens with high-quality healthcare. Jackson County is the
most industrialized county in Mississippi, and the
availability of high-quality healthcare continues to be a
major factor in people's decisions to move to or stay in a
community. Current fundamental values include treating
patients with respect, communicating with care and
compassion, serving with heart and soul, ensuring quality is
reflected in all it does, and ensuring collaboration always
prevails. These values build on the original ideas. Susan

says, "It truly is an amalgamation of who we are as an
organization and as community members."
Singing River coordinates several educational and
community outreach initiatives in addition to providing
philanthropic help. Providing world-class facilities utilized
by over 300 of the world's greatest doctors, and providing
over 4,000 workers, many with advanced degrees. Singing
River is a major catalyst for the local economy. Singing
River is proud to be the caregiver of choice because of its
commitment to enhancing the health of the local
community and making it a better place to live and work.
Distinct Offerings with Exceptional Quality
Singing River offers a wide variety of comprehensive
services, including a Surgical Center of Excellence, a
Robotic Center of Excellence and a Bariatric Center of
Excellence. That allows the region to benefit from the most
sophisticated robotic orthopedic operations, single-site
hysterectomies and bariatrics. Open-heart surgery is
provided as well as the only structural heart program in the
entire region. Additionally, there are very effective general,
oncology, and specialty clinics, as well as medical-surgical,
critical care, women's and children's, and behavioral health
programs housed within the three hospitals themselves.
In its field, Singing River is a technological innovator.
Technology in the fields of surgery, oncology, radiography,
and patient monitoring has received significant funding.
Additionally, it also has the Epic EMR, which is the
industry leader in providing the best in clinical and data
analysis to improve patient outcomes.
Reinvesting in the Workforce
According to Susan, everyone is struggling with shortages,
but having the best-trained and most engaged team
members is the best investment in resources to improve
patient outcomes. Singing River is supporting the concept
from the highest level of the organization down through the
entire structure. Everyone on the executive team believes in
the mission and wants every patient to receive the best
quality of care possible. Susan adds, "Our community is our
shareholders." And that's why she feels being part of a not-
for-profit is so important.
Overcoming the Adversities
Susan identifies the shortage of human resources since the
Great Resignation that began in 2020 as the main difficulty
in patient care, particularly related to nursing. The current
shortage has spurred Singing River Health System to
overhaul all clinical practices, which means taking a closer
look at the use of someone who is overly skilled or
experienced to do a task that could be possibly
accomplished by a lower-skilled individual. Also
questioning if some unnecessary tasks or processes are
requested or completed that do not improve the quality of
care. Even with the new innovations in creating more
healthcare workers than ever, the current shortage gap will
still not be enough to meet demand until the end of the
decade. That means the concept of having primarily RN
care teams must be reconsidered. Organizations, including
regulatory bodies that haven't revised regulations since
COVID, must take action to create workable solutions to
satisfy patient needs with the resources at hand.
Exhibiting Brilliance
Singing River Ocean Springs Hospital and Singing River
Pascagoula Hospital were recently awarded an 'A' in the
Fall 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national
distinction recognizing Singing River's achievements in
protecting patients from harm and providing safer
healthcare.
DNV recently certified Singing River Health System
Jackson County Locations to the ISO 9001 quality
management system. By standardizing processes around
practices that have been demonstrated to be effective by
those who will be providing care, ISO 9001 adds science to
the art of providing care. This empowers frontline
employees and fosters predictability throughout the entire
organization.
The most significant effect of ISO 9001 on hospitals is the
reduction or elimination of variance, ensuring that crucial
work processes are carried out consistently and that the
"best ideas" are not just held by one person or one
department but are instilled throughout the entire
organization.
Susan's vision for Singing River is working collaboratively
with others, including partnering providers, insurance
companies, local, state and federal agencies, other systems
and, of course, her patients! She says, "When we all join
forces for collective improvements, the patients are the
winners!"

  • 11. COVER STORY Misti Foust-Cofield Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Reid Health
  • 12. The following is an interview between Foust-Cofield and Insights Care, which discusses leadership, the healthcare sector, and her background in the field. Misti, tell us about yourself and your professional journey so far. I had the privilege of starting my own clinical journey as a SICU/Neuro ICU nurse at Halifax Medical Centre in Daytona Beach, Fla. We served as a Level 2 Trauma Centre for Daytona and many surrounding communities, caring for post-trauma patients and their families in the area. About 14 years ago, I transitioned “home” to Reid. I came back to Reid as a bedside Open Heart Recovery Nurse and was blessed to work with many great physicians and colleagues. I moved through a variety of growth opportunities including Manager of CCU, Inpatient Director of Nursing, and eventually into the role of CNO. Please tell us about Reid Health and its inception story. Reid Health offers nationally recognized quality and technology with a personal touch that sets us apart. Our growing team is known for going the extra mile to make sure our patients and families are made to feel as comfortable and cherished as possible when they find themselves in need of our services — on the main campus or at one of numerous satellite facilities in the eight-county region of Indiana and Ohio that we serve. We opened as Reid Memorial Hospital in 1905. Daniel G. Reid, an industrialist originally from Richmond, financed the construction. The hospital name was in memory of Reid's wife, Ella, and their son, Frank, who both died before the turn of the century. In 1992, we changed our name to Reid Hospital and Health Care Services to reflect our growth into much more than an inpatient hospital. In 2015, we again changed our name, this time to Reid Health. After almost 100 years at our original location, it became obvious the most cost-efficient and quality-driven option for continued growth would be a new facility. In September 2004, we broke ground at our new location on about 100 acres two miles north of our old home. We completed the move in September 2008, when the inpatient hospital opened its doors. Today, our health system includes a 271- bed hospital on our main campus and numerous satellite locations in the region of Eastern Indiana and Western Ohio that we serve. Reid's service area is home to about 280,000 people and includes six Indiana and two Ohio counties. We are accredited by the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP), the Indiana State Department of Health, Medicare/Medicaid, American Association of Blood Banks and the American College of Surgeons Community Cancer Program. What are the key products and services of the organization? In addition to our inpatient hospital in Richmond, Ind., Reid Health offers primary care and several specialty services at locations throughout our eight-county service area. Key service lines include Heart & Vascular, where our providers have experience with the Watchman and TAVR procedures and cutting-edge treatment options to address conditions such as A Fib (Watchman) and aortic stenosis (TAVR). We also have an excellent cardiothoracic program to keep our community receiving open heart surgery close to home. Other services include MSK, where we have made a particular commitment and investment in technology, including Mako and Mazor robotic systems for joint replacement and minimally invasive spine surgeries; Obstetrics and Gynecology services; Emergency Services; Surgical Services and Oncology. We’ve been rounding to simply acknowledge the hard work of our teams. They’ve been so commi ed to our community, and we are indebted for the service and amazing care they con nue to render.
  • 13.
  • 14. Also, in 2019, we contracted with Wayne County, Ind., to begin offering ambulance services in one section of the county. Since then, we have grown to offer those same services to nearly all of Wayne County, as well as all of Union County in Indiana, and now have seven ambulances in our fleet. What are the core values of Reid Health? How are you driving the organization to achieve its mission and vision? In April 2021, we announced new mission, vision, and value statements to help govern decision-making over the coming years. Mission: To lead our communities to well-being, one person at a time Vision: Healthier people, thriving communities, trusted partner Values: Excellence, Empathy, Integrity, Accountability Those statements sum up our culture and give our team members a clear understanding of what’s important to us as an organization as we work to serve the needs of our patients and communities. For our patients and their families, the statements represent the level of care they should expect to receive from us. In your opinion, what are the current challenges in the nursing industry? How do you aspire to turn them into opportunities under your leadership? We’re doing our best to reimagine nursing and nursing leadership. We’re partnering to increase our workforce pipeline and are focused on restoring the passion in our workforce and team members. We’re focusing greatly on the mental health and well-being of our clinicians and doing our best to enhance care delivery by leveraging technology and decreasing the stress on our bedside teams. Amongst the heavy workflow, how do you ensure that your organization allows its staff to maintain a healthy work-life balance? Our teams have been incredibly resilient and have been so courageous during the pandemic to relentlessly serve our community. We’re acknowledging the importance of work- life balance by offering many of our meetings and communication through social media platforms and virtual options. This allows our teams to spend more time with their families. We’ve placed tremendous focus on the mental health and well-being of our bedside teams, offering EAP services and a Code Lavender support team. We’ve also undertaken a remodel of all staff breakrooms to develop tranquil, serene environments that our teams can use to take a mid-shift break that’s not in a sterile “hospital-like” environment. We recently opened a childcare center to help ease the burden of finding childcare. This has been wildly successful, so much so we have a wait list for openings at the center. We’ve been rounding to simply acknowledge the hard work of our teams. They’ve been so committed to our community, and we are indebted for the service and amazing care they continue to render. Could you share with us any moment or event that impacted your professional life profoundly? I’ve been blessed with many meaningful moments throughout my nursing journey. I’ve cared for a number of patients and families who have left a lasting impression on my heart and mind. One patient who I resuscitated during a cardiac arrest still stays in touch, and her children and grandchildren know me. They typically reach out on the anniversary of our encounter and send me words of kindness and appreciation. It’s that type of appreciation that fills my bucket, and I’m the one being truly blessed. As an experienced leader, what advice would you like to give to aspiring entrepreneurs and enthusiasts who wish to venture into the competitive industry that you are serving? I would highly recommend anyone considering this career to do it! Do it with all your heart, mind and soul. I would encourage others to be fearless and relentless to pursue your passion to serve others. This work is tough and can be stressful for not only the leader but their family. Nursing leadership is more than a career, it’s a lifestyle and truly never turns off. If it’s who you are to the core, this is the appropriate field for you. Do not be afraid to fail and always be vulnerable and genuine to those who you’re privileged to serve. It’s the most rewarding career to serve

  • 16. others and to touch so many patients and families through the ripple impact of leadership. What are the future goals of the organization? How does it envision scaling up its operations to reach 2022 and beyond? We’re in the middle of an expansion that includes new facilities in key communities aimed at bringing more services and specialty care providers closer to the patients we serve. As part of that growth, we’re prioritizing technology, seeking to make state-of-the-art equipment and systems available to those who entrust us with their care. That includes a first-of-its-kind project that began this year to upgrade inpatient rooms at our hospital to add smart boards and other features that are directly integrated with Epic, our electronic medical records-keeping system. The project will allow us to use our recently purchased patient beds and a new call light system to their fullest capabilities, which will enhance patient care and consolidate work for bedside staff. Give us a few of your awards or recognition that accurately highlight your company’s position in the market. During my time as a CNO, my team worked together to achieve several accreditations, certifications, and other recognitions from national organizations that reflect our high- quality care, including: Ÿ Verification as a Level 3 trauma center for our emergency rooms in Richmond and Connersville, Ind. Ÿ Certification as a Primary Stroke Center from the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP) Ÿ Accreditation for the Reid Health Breast Center Ÿ Accreditation for our Urgent Care locations in Richmond, Connersville and Eaton, Ohio Ÿ American Heart Association’s Get with the Guidelines—Stroke Gold Plus award for best practices in stroke care Ÿ Accreditation for the Reid Health Care Pavilion Ÿ Accreditation for our Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programs in Richmond and Connersville In addition, Reid Health was named one of America’s Best Midsize Employers by Forbes and received the 2022 Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades.

That is when I decided to pursue the field of nursing. • 21. Brief us about yourself and shed some light on your journey and studies as a Chief Nursing Officer. I have never really sought a promotion in my nursing career. However, I have enjoyed my roles. The more nurses that I manage, the more I feel responsible for supporting them to reach their potential, strive towards the highest quality care and enjoy what they do. What role do compassion and nurse-patient communication play in providing quality care for patients? When I speak to young nurses today, I am often called to give them simple tips on what it takes to be a good nurse. Of course, you need to be well-trained and competent in what you do. Still, with kindness and common sense added in, you are bound to make a massive difference in the quality of care of your patients. Considering that you are an enthusiast in the nursing field, what nursing initiatives are you actively involved in? Develop a learning culture; Use nurse-process reviews to learn from serious incidents and near misses; Introduce Every Ready Governance, Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Programme, Pathway to Excellence and Work towards Magnet. What are some of the challenges you face when conducting nursing operations, and how do you turn them into opportunities for growth? We have a global challenge regarding nurse recruitment and retention. This is a widely held concern for healthcare providers all over the world. To meet the needs of our future patients, we need to remodel how nursing care is delivered. For example, instead of calculating the number of nurses to patients in a ratio setting, we need to turn this upside down and consider what every individual needs and who is best placed to provide this care. This cannot only mean registered and licensed nurses – there are not enough of us – but this could include other trained and competent healthcare workers. Please share with us some nursing insights you would like other nurses to know. Being a nurse is a privilege. We are honoured to be invited into our patients' most personal and private world and allowed to offer what we can to make life easier, comforted and less painful. How do you envision scaling your services and operations in 2023 and beyond? Every patient has the right to expect safe, caring and high-quality care. We are here to meet the needs of our patients and will stop at nothing to be able to deliver this. Ÿ Develop constructive and supportive relationships to benefit the whole team Ÿ Encourage a safe work culture to provide support, build resilience and offer debriefing opportunities COMMUNICATION: Ÿ Be active listeners who are receptive to others and who listen with their heart Ÿ Be skilled at mediation in demanding situations–be the "go-to" person when others are struggling with communication in challenging situations of potential or actual conflict Ÿ Communicate clearly and concisely with patients, families and colleagues, employing unambiguous terminology COMPASSION: Ÿ Be open, warm, kind, caring, and gentle Ÿ Model empathy and demonstrate a caring attitude to all patients and their families Ÿ Connect sensitively with a good understanding of patients' and families' needs Ÿ Assure the comfort and confidence of patients and families Ÿ Demonstrate a deep understanding of an individualized patient experience Ÿ Remain sensitive to the needs of others in all circumstances Ÿ Provide a nurturing and caring atmosphere for all professional colleagues 19| January 2023|www.insightscare.com
  • 22. Chief Nursing The Role of Officers in Advancing the Healthcare Industry ccording to Advancing Health, nursing has a Asignificant role in healthcare reform and the requirements for an affordable, secure, high- quality, patient-centered healthcare system. From the highest person, the Chief Nursing officer, to the staff nurse, nurses must understand how nursing practice must drastically change to provide the expected level of quality care to achieve these outcomes and actively participate in the change. With a renewed emphasis on patient-centered care, care coordination, data analytics and quality improvement, these modifications will necessitate a new or enhanced skill set in wellness and population care. At the individual or system level, transformation and the necessary changes will not be simple. Individually, it necessitates assessing one's knowledge, abilities and attitudes to determine whether or not they position you to contribute to the upcoming change or to resist it. It necessitates an examination of the organization's mission, goals, partnerships, procedures, leadership, and other essential components at the organizational level before 20| January 2023|www.insightscare.com
  • 24. reorganizing them, thereby causing disruptions to the status quo. Let's go over the developments and learn more about them! Wellness and Prevention We must move away from a healthcare system that focuses on illness and toward wellness and prevention. As a result, wellness and preventive-focused evaluations, fitness and health education programs, and programs to address the social or environmental causes of preventable disease conditions and care issues must be given the same importance as providers' disease-focused clinical intervention. What does this entail in the context of actual orthopedic practice? It means addressing "upstream" factors to prevent or minimize musculoskeletal health issues at the population health level. From a wellness perspective, a gait analysis, screening for osteoporosis, and a plan to prevent or reduce risk to prevent subsequent falls and potential fractures would all be implemented. The patient might also be referred to a Matter of Balance program, which would provide the patient with strategies to reduce falling and increase strength and balance. Patient and Family Focused Care One more important attribute of the changed medical care framework should be a faithful spotlight on the patient. If patients and families are to take charge of their health, they must receive care focused on them and their families rather than the providers. Again, nurses are well-suited for this position because they have always embraced a holistic approach to care that includes patients, families and communities and empowers patients to take responsibility for their health and disease management. Nurses can work with patients to help them achieve their goals by providing education and coaching with an eye toward the outcomes reported by patients. A necessary skill is using action planning and motivational interviewing to help patients change their behavior. Care Coordination The patient-centered continuum of care, first proposed in 1984, is a system that guides and follows individuals over time through a seamless array of health, mental health and social services at all levels and intensities of care. Continuous coordination is essential to prevent or minimize fragmentation because the continuum includes services from health to illness, from birth to death, and from various organizations, providers and services. All patients require care coordination because it bridges the disjointed health system and makes it more manageable and coherent, which benefits both the patient and the provider. Because it has been confirmed that transitions represent high-risk periods for safety issues and adverse outcomes due to a lack of continuity of care, this type of care, referred to as transitional care, has been a significant focus. Focus on Getting Better Results and Outcomes Nurses in the new healthcare system will need to be able to collect and track clinical and financial data across settings and over time. Key metrics need to be followed at the individual and population levels. It provides the necessary information to comprehend the challenges facing each patient. To achieve the triple aim, we will need to keep track of overtime of outcomes related to psychosocial status, behavior change, clinical and health status, satisfaction, quality of life, productivity, and cost. Predictive modeling employs these data to stratify the population based on the disease state or risk profile. Through stratification, health promotion, wellness and care will be provided to those at no or low risk. In conclusion, Undeniably, nurses are well-positioned to assume responsibilities that will advance health, enhance care, and increase value. However, it will necessitate new approaches to thought and practice. “The time has come for nursing, at the heart of patient care, to take the lead in the revolution to make healthcare more patient-centered and quality-driven," reads the statement. "Nurses can no longer take a back seat." The vital question to ask here is, "Are you ready?" - Shreyasi Shelke 22| January 2023|www.insightscare.com

  • 26. Michelle Wallace Instilling Hope, Delivering Quality Care! magine an elderly patient undergoing treatment in a Ihealthcare setting who has no nearby family and struggles with mobility. Administering the patient's medications is critical, along with the numerous health technicalities that are involved. But is that all the patient is asking for? Definite standard care in this situation is of utmost importance, but compassion, companionship, and other skills outside the technical realm can create wonders to improve the quality of a patient’s life. This has made nurses uniquely position themselves in the healthcare niche, wherein their direct contact with patients builds relationships and plays a critical role in patients’ health and satisfaction. And talking about this unique blend of technical knowledge and an empathetic person-centered approach, one person that ticks the list righteously is Michelle Wallace. Throughout her decade-long experience in the Grady Health System, Michelle has been committed to delivering quality care with humanity, compassion and kindness. In order to learn about how Michelle stands by these values and transforms care, kindly delve into her insightful interview. What was your inspiration behind venturing into the healthcare sector? My greatest inspiration for entering the healthcare field was the opportunity to serve others. My father is retired Army, and my grandfather is a retired police officer. Serving has always been an integral part of what our family does. Please tell us about your journey, highlighting your contribution to Grady Health System's success. In 2012, I became the Emergency Department leader, just as Grady began its transformation. Grady is one of an elite group of hospitals to earn the Baby-Friendly USA international recognition as a Baby-Friendly Designated birth facility. How do you enable patient-centric care with specific operations that the hospital runs on? One of our core values is providing patient-centered care. This is instilled in all Grady employees from day one. As a safety net hospital, we provide the highest quality care to all patients, no matter their circumstances, treating everyone with dignity and respect. We maintain open lines of communication with our patients to ensure they understand what’s happening every step of the way and trust us to take care of them. What are some of the challenges that you face and the most important lessons that you have learned in your professional journey so far. I've learned that healthcare is a constant evolution. The last 2 ½ years have underscored that even more, as frontline workers and hospital leaders have had to adjust and figure out how to manage the COVID-19 pandemic. I’ve learned the importance of resiliency and overcoming the adversities we face daily in healthcare. But most importantly, I’ve learned that if your team’s primary focus is the overall health and well-being of patients and their families, then you’re doing the right thing. Being an experienced leader, what is your intuitive advice for budding youngsters venturing into healthcare. My advice to those entering healthcare is always to be open to learning. Be humble enough to know when you don’t know – and humble enough to know when you need to ask for help. As they grow into leadership roles, they should understand the importance of taking care of their frontline team. If you have the team’s best interest at heart and take care of them, they’ll be able to better care for patients. Apart from your journey, how do you envision further strengthening Grady Health System’s stronghold in 2022 and beyond? Truly focusing on the right things – our people and our patients. If we view decisions through that lens, we don’t make wrong decisions. In addition, as we continue to move through the pandemic, nursing and patient care are at a crossroads. Key decisions will be made that will impact the trajectory of patient care. As a safety net hospital, we provide the highest quality care to all patients, no ma er their circumstances, treating everyone with dignity and respect. 26| January 2023|www.insightscare.com

In an exclusive interview with Insights Care Let us know more about Siân’s journey in reshaping healthcare. Kindly tell us your source of inspiration, what led you to the healthcare industry? At the age of 18, I accepted a healthcare assistant position at a local hospital, this role shaped the entire trajectory of my career. Based on a geriatric rehabilitation unit, my duties were far from glamorous, but it taught me the importance of compassionate care. I felt like I made a difference and quickly realized the endless opportunities within healthcare to contribute to care needs. The drive for empathetic, patient centric care continues to motivate me to this day. Can you shed some light on your career journey over the years? Originally from the UK, I trained and worked in the NHS for 15 years before relocating to the Middle East. I have passed through many roles in my career from staff nurse, educator, clinical nurse specialist, senior advisor, and nurse consultant. Each of these roles has positively contributed to where I am today. I was CNO of several facilities and groups in the region before being appointed as Chief Nursing Officer of Al Futtaim Health, leading the nursing functions across all brands and divisions of Al Futtaim. What studies or skill development did it take for you to become a Chief Nursing Officer? This career has always pushed me to keep learning and I have undertaken a balance of clinical, quality and leadership development over the years. In addition to nursing I studied public health, clinical education and healthcare management which enabled me to have a more holistic outlook on healthcare. Quality is integral to my role so I felt it was important to achieve chartered member status with CQP (UK’s professional body for quality & auditing professionals) and to secure NAHQ’s certified professional in healthcare quality licensure (CPHQ-USA). My nursing administration & leadership skills organically evolved over time and were formally assessed when I was conferred as a certified global nurse consultant (CGNC) by the International Council of Nurses (ICN). • 32. Can you elaborate on the core values and mission of Al- Futtaim Health? How do you align the nursing services to best serve the organization? Al-Futtaim Health’s values are centered around 5 key pillars: Excellence, Compassion, Innovation, Respect and Ethical practices. Being responsible for the creation and development of the nursing structure, excellence was fundamental. I believe excellence starts with a strong team culture, so nurturing & developing the right culture within the nursing department was critical to me. I ensured sustainable quality governance structures were embedded within the department, through dedicated roles, support & education. Compassion is massively associated with nursing and is at the heart of what we do. I am incredibly grateful to have introduced the international DAISY awards to the organization. DAISY is a patient nominated award to recognize extraordinary nursing care and compassion. This year we were honored to welcome the DAISY foundation Co-founders, CEO and VP from the USA, to attend one of our nursing award ceremonies. Innovation is the value that also relates to our mission, which is ‘to redefine the healthcare experience by delivering high quality, smart and integrated care’. This is one area where Al-Futtaim Health have been a pioneer in the region by creating end-to-end digital solutions, and nurses have been a key player in the care delivery of these solutions. Nurses’ roles are ever evolving, and the use of technology, telemetry and assisted devises are now part of modern-day nursing care. For example, we recently launched our SmartDoc project, this technology uses a remote device deployed & operated by specialist nurses. This project was a huge success for the organization and was even awarded platinum status at the 2022 Patient Safety Awards. In what areas, in your opinion, does the regional health system struggle when it comes to treating patients? In any private healthcare system, fragmented care is a real issue. It's essential to have a well-balanced healthcare ecosystem that works seamlessly for continuous health management. We live in ever-changing times, and the UAE has demonstrated its enormous strength and forward- thinking in this area. The pandemic saw instant responses and initiatives from the entire healthcare spectrum, both public and private. Al Futtaim Health was one of the first private providers to partner with the DHA on pandemic response initiatives, working together for population safety in real-time. We rapidly established a large COVID-19 field hospital and launched multiple response projects across Dubai. Considering that you are an enthusiast in the field of nursing, what nursing initiatives are you actively involved in? I am a huge advocate of nurse empowerment and I believe it’s important to constantly learn, share and contribute to developing the nursing profession. I have a passion for mentoring as it offers bidirectional learning and development as well as a connection to the

I joined this movement after the success- ful launch of the Nightingale Challenge, which I had the pleasure of being a very small part of. I also sit as an editorial board member of a healthcare journal, which provides me the opportunity to keep up with the latest research and practices. As a fellow of a government- selected nurse leader task force and roundtable expert panel, I can contribute to think tank policy development and promote strategic initiatives within healthcare. I was extremely humbled to have received an award earlier this year for my contribution to healthcare. Share with us some nursing insights or tips that you would like nurses to know. Never stop learning or growing. Nursing is such a versatile career with many opportunities. Every role in healthcare is important. Having worked across a spectrum of designations from HCA to CNO, I can't emphasize enough the importance of a systems mindset. Each role adds a unique value, and we all need to work together for care to be effective. Listening is how I learn so much from my team; it's also part of our motto, "We Hear You." It is important that you stay connected, as you move from the bedside to the boardroom, it is easy to get consumed by administration and lose connection with the wider workforce. Maintaining communication and ensuring psychological safety within your team is vital. In addition to structured feedback, leadership rounds, nursing committees and initiatives, I hold agenda free drop-in sessions monthly, which helps keep dialogue open. What are some of the challenges you face when conducting nursing operations, and how do you turn them into opportunities for growth? I think the biggest challenge faced by any CNO is staff retention or staffing numbers in general, as this impacts skill mix planning and general operations. This is a global issue everywhere and was recently intensified due to the pandemic. The surge in operational demands made everyone re-evaluate capacity planning. One thing that nurses are renowned for is their ingenuity and flexibility, so of course this has been turned into an opportunity for growth! We learned fast that with the right support, training and framework in place, it was possible to create a more agile, cross-functional workforce. Roles and responsibilities were re-evaluated, and we introduced modified processes, designations, or smart technology for greater utilization and skill optimization. This in turn created new roles and expanded opportunities for our nurses, with career and skill progression that ultimately resulted in staff satisfaction. In an ever-competitive global market, staff satisfaction and self-development are vital components of growing any workforce. 31| January 2023|www.insightscare.com
  • 34. Nursing Transforma ons in the Industry Shaping up Healthcare in 2023 isparities, unsustainable costs, fragmentation, Ddifficulties gaining access, and unfavourable outcomes are some factors driving healthcare transformation. The most pressing need for change was brought about by shifting social and disease-type demographics and concerns regarding cost and quality. As a country, we have taken simple actions toward higher standards and reduced costs for decades. However, caring for and paying for patients with chronic health conditions is a significant concern. As we move away from episodic, provider-based, fee-for-service care and toward team-based, patient-centered care across the continuum that provides seamless, affordable and high-quality care, nurses can lead and contribute to the transformative changes occurring in healthcare. These shifts necessitate a new or improved set of wellness and population care knowledge, skills and attitudes, with a renewed emphasis on patient-centered care, care coordination, data analytics and quality improvement. • 36. Let's look at some of the transformative changes Nurse Shortage would Continue Around the world, there are 28 million nurses, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). However, that number isn't sufficiently high for patient numbers and needs. As a result, there is a global shortage of nurses, and to meet the healthcare needs of all patients and their needs, 6 million more positions will need to be filled by 2030. This number will online keep on ascending all through 2023 also. Many of the Gen X-er ages are close to retirement age, Coronavirus hindered new likely medical caretakers from acquiring training, and as medical caretaker burnout increments, more medical attendants are leaving the medical care field overall. The consequences of Coronavirus and the worldwide nursing deficiency are felt all through medical services and will continue being judged for the following couple of years. Driving Force for Change With the changing driving force, nursing has brought many changes in the medical field. Waste: In the United States, 30 cents of each dollar spent on medical care is wasted, costing $750 billion annually. Inefficient care delivery, high administrative costs, services that aren't needed, high prices, failures in prevention, and fraud all contribute to this. Quality: The U.S. wellbeing framework positions last or close to last contrasted and six different countries like Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the Unified Real on five components of the elite execution wellbeing framework: accessibility, fairness, quality and healthy lives. Hospitals in the United States were found to re-admit an average of one-fifth of Medicare patients within 30 days of discharge, despite the higher costs. According to reports, 25% of Medicare patients discharged to long-term care facilities were re-admitted to the hospital within 30 days, and the list is never-ending. Changing Demographics The need for change is also fueled by shifting social and disease-type demographics among our citizens. The term "the browning of America" was given by demographer James Johnson to show that people of color now make up most of the country's growing population. Access to health coverage, which contributes to poorer health access and outcomes and an unnecessary cost, is one area where people of color face persistent and long-lasting health status disparities. In its annual National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report, the AHRQ has shown that when accessing healthcare, racial and ethnic minorities and low-income individuals face more obstacles and receive lower-quality care. These facts emphasize the need for our system to be changed. Covering with the changing social socioeconomics is the adjustment of illness-type socioeconomics since there is an ascent in persistent sickness among Americans and fundamentally so among more established Americans. An estimated 133 million Americans are affected by chronic disease, which includes heart disease, stroke, cancer, Type 2 diabetes, obesity, and arthritis. The leading cause of death and disability is chronic disease. Chronic diseases are among the most "common, expensive, and preventable" health issues. Healthcare Reform The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 was ushered in by the continued skyrocketing of healthcare costs, the less-than-impressive health status of the American people, safety and quality issues within the healthcare system, and growing concerns that price and quality issues would intensify with changing demographics. And the fact that there were 50 million Americans uninsured and 40 million underinsured in the United States. Further developing worth signifies "staying away from exorbitant slip-ups and readmissions, keeping patients solid, compensating quality rather than amount, and making the wellbeing data innovation foundation that empowers new installment and conveyance models to work." We are moving toward new reimbursement principles and payment models for care thanks to the ACA and the CMS's authority to implement value. In conclusion, Undeniably, nurses are well-positioned to assume responsibilities that will advance health, enhance care, and increase value. However, it will necessitate new approaches to thought and practice. It is essential to shift your practice's focus away from the disease episode of care and toward promoting health and care across the continuum. - Shreyasi Shelke 34| January 2023|www.insightscare.com

Singing River coordinates several educational and community outreach initiatives in addition to providing philanthropic help. Providing world-class facilities utilized by over 300 of the world's greatest doctors, and providing over 4,000 workers, many with advanced degrees. Singing River is a major catalyst for the local economy. Singing River is proud to be the caregiver of choice because of its commitment to enhancing the health of the local community and making it a better place to live and work. Distinct Offerings with Exceptional Quality Singing River offers a wide variety of comprehensive services, including a Surgical Center of Excellence, a Robotic Center of Excellence and a Bariatric Center of Excellence. That allows the region to benefit from the most sophisticated robotic orthopedic operations, single-site hysterectomies and bariatrics. Open-heart surgery is provided as well as the only structural heart program in the entire region. Additionally, there are very effective general, oncology, and specialty clinics, as well as medical-surgical, critical care, women's and children's, and behavioral health programs housed within the three hospitals themselves. In its field, Singing River is a technological innovator. Technology in the fields of surgery, oncology, radiography, and patient monitoring has received significant funding. Additionally, it also has the Epic EMR, which is the industry leader in providing the best in clinical and data analysis to improve patient outcomes. Reinvesting in the Workforce According to Susan, everyone is struggling with shortages, but having the best-trained and most engaged team members is the best investment in resources to improve patient outcomes. Singing River is supporting the concept from the highest level of the organization down through the entire structure. Everyone on the executive team believes in the mission and wants every patient to receive the best quality of care possible. Susan adds, "Our community is our shareholders." And that's why she feels being part of a not- for-profit is so important. Overcoming the Adversities Susan identifies the shortage of human resources since the Great Resignation that began in 2020 as the main difficulty in patient care, particularly related to nursing. The current shortage has spurred Singing River Health System to overhaul all clinical practices, which means taking a closer look at the use of someone who is overly skilled or experienced to do a task that could be possibly accomplished by a lower-skilled individual. Also questioning if some unnecessary tasks or processes are requested or completed that do not improve the quality of care. Even with the new innovations in creating more healthcare workers than ever, the current shortage gap will still not be enough to meet demand until the end of the decade. That means the concept of having primarily RN care teams must be reconsidered. Organizations, including regulatory bodies that haven't revised regulations since COVID, must take action to create workable solutions to satisfy patient needs with the resources at hand. Exhibiting Brilliance Singing River Ocean Springs Hospital and Singing River Pascagoula Hospital were recently awarded an 'A' in the Fall 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing Singing River's achievements in protecting patients from harm and providing safer healthcare. By standardizing processes around practices that have been demonstrated to be effective by those who will be providing care, ISO 9001 adds science to the art of providing care. This empowers frontline employees and fosters predictability throughout the entire organization. The most significant effect of ISO 9001 on hospitals is the reduction or elimination of variance, ensuring that crucial work processes are carried out consistently and that the "best ideas" are not just held by one person or one department but are instilled throughout the entire organization. Susan's vision for Singing River is working collaboratively with others, including partnering providers, insurance companies, local, state and federal agencies, other systems and, of course, her patients!
