Teaching stand up jetskiing from a superyacht, key differences between stand ups and sit down PWC (personal watercraft), course programming, key teaching points, hints and tips.
2. Background
Key differences between stand up & sit downs
Safety elements - killcords, personal kit/clothing

6. Are yours fit for purpose?
Risks of pull fasten variety
coming off:
Preference to use
those with velcro
attachments
7. Lots of time covering ‘drag start & kneeling’ – safety
Additional breaks/rest periods
Personal kit
IRPCS practical - completed in kneeling position to
allow for reduced speed required & stability.

9. Deep water / Drag start:Deep water / Drag start:
Chest/torso as far up the tray as possible
Head up for good visibility/look out
Arms close to torso and resting on gunwales not
inside or outside tray.
9
10. Approximately 10knots for stability
Push up off forearms (resting on gunwhales)
Push down on handlebars/pole
One movement
Try to get knees as far forward in tray as possible
10
11. Maintain a reasonable speed for stability
Weight forward
Pole down
Blip throttle to retain stability
Practice turning using handlebars
Progress to leaning into turn
11
12. Maintain a higher speed, 10 knots +
Blip throttle for stability
Leave pole down, push down on handlebars to lift body
One fluid movement
Once upright select stance (see next slide) & raise pole
Plant weight onto feet/in tray not on handlebars
12
13. Slight crouch
Knees slightly bent (shock absorbers)
Low centre of gravity
Arms relaxed
Surf vs. Freestyle
Which foot forward?
14. • One foot forward, one foot back,
wide stance
• Regular = Left foot forward
• Goofy = Right foot forward
• Dominant foot at BACK of tray
Some riders will remain in the
same stance, others will change
their lead foot according to the
turn direction.
15. What is it?
Both feet at back of tray
Pros: Allows you to pump in
order to hop/gain height.
Cons: unstable in lumpy
conditions
16. Start by turning with handlebars, follow with weight
adjustments
Start with wide turns & progressively get tighter
Reduce height/centre of balance through corner
Allow leading knee to drop forward & down into
corner to encourage good balance, stability and
tighter turns.
16
17. Speed = stability
Blip throttle
Stay loose (arms & chest) bars are for steering not
leaning on
No stability under 10mph
Like learning to ride a bike, go slow & you will
wobble
Keep the ski under you at all times when steering
18. Struggling to get going (deep water start)?
Unable to hold on due to drag = Ensure upper
body is out of the water (put elbows on top side of
tray, with elbows tucked in towards core- no bat-
wings!)
Immediate loss of balance = getting up to
quickly /early.
19. When kneeling:
Weight too far back in tray, shift knees to front of
tray
When standing:
Weight too far back in tray - Put front foot forward
& apply pressure
20. Falling on a turn:
Get lower in the tray & keep the throttle on.
Remember to use the handlebars to turn BEFORE
you start leaning into it.
Steer then lean
Back end sliding out on turn:
Put more weight in the back of the tray to allow the
keel to grip
21. Falling to the inside of the turn?
Turn hard to the inside & drop your weight low
quickly
Falling to the outside of the turn?
Turn hard to the outside & get your weight low
quickly
22. We offer onboard crew training.
Minimum 1 day - following the RYA PWC
proficiency course syllabus on a stand up.
If you are currently an instructor, an update/CPD
session can be included in this.
