- We help ambitious businesses innovate, scale and go global. We are at the heart of the EU and UK ’s growth and jobs strategy, increasingly reflected in this government’s Industrial Strategy and its commitment to innovation, then internationalisation. We already have many years’ experience and have built up significant expertise and strong connections since our original launch in 2008. The Network entered a second phase in 2015, which brought new six-year financing under the COSME and Horizon 2020 programmes as well as exciting new innovation services that we also provide for SMEs. Part of the Innovate UK family since 2015, bringing a new emphasis on innovation and commercialisation support, we have 21 partners offering a consistent national service, providing local-to-national-to-international reach. This demonstrates the continued importance and value of the trusted services that we provide. In figures, the combined total funding for EEN across Europe is 180 million EURO. The UK’s current move towards exiting the European Union does not affect our current drive and purpose. Until we officially leave the EU, EEN is working hard to fulfil its commitment to innovative SMEs. Our funding remains, and so do we.
- This says quite simply who we look to work with – and who will get the most out of working with us. So our target market is SMEs who have ambitions to look to new markets abroad and grow with an international dimension. And we’re an innovation support service – not a general business support service. Work closely with our LEP partners to make sure the full range is offered… …but our focus is on innovation and thriving in new international markets.
- EEN is all about offering tailored support which fits your/an SME’s individual circumstances. There’s lots we can do, but these are the key features of our offer. There’s more on each of these points as we go through this presentation: We reach directly into countries all over the world. We can help you manage your innovation, commercialise great ideas, in order to grow We’ll help you find trusted new business partners across Europe and the world We have great market insights and intelligence so can help you move into new markets We don’t fund you ourselves, but we can help you find the right private financing or public funding options for your stage of your journey. And we’re increasingly focusing on helping companies with high growth ambitions; with specific expert guidance and mentoring to not just grow but scale
- EEN has a truly global reach, not just across Europe but extending into the largest international markets – including the US, Canada, Brazil, India, China and New Zealand. And this is not Brits abroad. EEN partners in all countries actually come from those countries, lending authentic local insight into business opportunity.
- So our scope and reach means: 3000 local experts (by which we mean Full Time Equivalents) Spread over more than 600 locations In more than 60 countries worldwide (So while we may only be a few here today), we are able to reach out to thousands of Network colleagues across the globe. This means that we can help SMEs from our region do business in dozens of countries, working with our peers who know those markets inside out, and get privileged access to information on the ground. “Europe”: our name is about the fact that whatever our relationship with it the European single market is on our doorstep, but its not the limit of what we do or the sole target of our services. It’s also about acknowledging where the funding for this comes from too!
- Finding trusted partners continues to be one of the bedrocks of the EEN offer to SMEs. Using our services, businesses can find – and be introduced to – potential partners who are also seeking to grow in this way. These partners are usually, but not always, in other countries – any of the more-than-60 we mentioned earlier. Partnerships can be for research, technical or commercial development.
- Through direct access to Europe’s largest database of business opportunities, our experts help SMEs forge new international partnerships with excellent growth potential. We organise fast and effective matchmaking and brokerage events at international conferences to save clients time and money. Our tailor-made trade missions lead to successful partnerships thanks to thorough preparation, local knowledge and expert guidance. We work hard to find potential partners that are just right for you. Once we have put you together we remain on hand to support, but not lead or interfere with, the commercial negotiations crucial to partnership success.
- You may seek a new partner abroad – or you may be most interested in finding new markets for your product or service. EEN’s great strength here, as in other areas, is that market understanding and insight comes from local, native experts. Advisers who know the particular features, opportunities and risks of, say, the German market as well as our experts here who have intimate understanding of – again, for example - London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, Newcastle and so on.
- We recognise an SME’s innovation potential and help them shape it into commercial success. We don’t do the innovation for you, but - critically - our experts will work alongside you to help SMEs commercialise their innovations faster and place innovation at the continuing heart of business expansion. With our practical, personal advice SMEs are confident to expand internationally protecting their ideas and assets as they grow.
- Whilst EEN staff are not full time market researchers, these are some of the specific market services our advisers can help you with: Where to target your particular product/service through live conversations with people actually living and working in the country/ market of interest Sector insights arising from the above conversations and other more “desk-based” activities, or connections to relevant local regulatory advice How to source new products, services or partners, including what to look for, how to select and ongoing management Help understanding how best to go about setting up distribution and agency deals If you need or are looking to license new technologies, products or services, we can provide the kind of advice that will help you get the most out of your professional advisers (e.g. IP lawyers are expensive, knowing how to make the most of your conversations with them can be very cost effective!) And advice on shaping your marketing strategy, from all of the above activities we can help you create or shape your marketing strategy as it evolves to incorporate what you have learnt, and who else to talk to, to get more specialist advice

We will send out these specific updated slides so you can update your deck) There are many ways in which we measure the effectiveness of EEN, and we do so on a rolling quarterly basis. Here are just a few of our headline figures: In the 1 quarters between January 2015 and September 2017, EEN in ENIW: Advised and supported a total of 7,050 SMEs Within this overall number, 1,538 of those SMEs succeeded in taking forward specific international collaborations with research, technology or commercial partners 1,046 of the total SMEs supported came onto our Innovate 2 Succeed programme – dedicated coaching and mentoring to improve the way they manage and commercially exploit their great ideas We helped companies raise a total of £71.7 million in either private finance or public funding Of those companies that won SMEi funding, we have connected over 300 of them with a dedicated business coach Through 287 international brokerage events/missions, SMEs have gained 7,677 opportunities to meet face-to-face with potential partners and discuss/negotiate future relationships.
