Navigating the LSAC Process
14. 1. Basic Service—Free

for programs you are interested in. You can save a list of schools.
• Candidate Referral Service (CRS) - helps law schools recruit students.
2. Document Assembly Service (DAS)
• US $ 85, good for five years, plus $30 for each law school report
3. International Transcript Authentication and Evaluation Service (ITAES) -
• for international LLM applicants
• Authenticate & evaluate documents
• US $135, in addition to $85 for DAS
2. Purchase the LLM “CAS”
Credential Assembly Service
16. English proficiency exam
• Required by most law schools for whom English is not their native language
• TOEFL or IELTS Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or
the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
• Applicant´s responsibility to identify which of the schools of interest to you
require this test.
• Each school sets its own standard for required minimal scores on the tests.
• LSAC will accept score reports for either TOEFL or IELTS exams.
• LSAC will include your score(s) in your LLM credential evaluation upon receipt
of an official score report from the testing service.
• LSAC can receive TOEFL score(s) electronically- to do so you must supply ETS
with LSAC’s institution code, 8395.
17. Official Records
How to Have Transcripts Sent
• You must use LSAC’s Transcript Request Form (TRF)
• Send a TRF to each of the postsecondary institutions you have attended, regardless of
whether or not a degree was completed.
• Have each institution complete the form and return it to us by mail, along with your
official transcript/mark sheet/academic record.
All documents must be received in a sealed institution envelope from the issuing
institution, with an institution stamp or seal across the sealed flap.
If an international institution issues only one “original” to the student, then LSAC will
accept a certified copy of the transcript, but it must be certified by the issuing institution
as a true and correct copy of the original with official stamp/seal of institution
If you have records from education completed outside of the United States, all of your
attested documents from the issuing institution must be submitted in the original
language.
If the transcripts or other required documents are not in English, a translation must
be forwarded. English translations do not need to be certified, may be completed by
you, and may be sent separately from the transcript if necessary.
18. Letters of Recommendation
A letter of recommendation discusses the qualities and characteristics of the applicant’s
ability, academic and otherwise, to study law.
Use of LSAC’s LOR service is optional unless a law school to which you are applying requires
its use but allows you to use your LLM account to have your LORs sent to law schools based
on each school’s requirements.
• Should be written by people that know you will
• Usually require 2-3 letters
• Can be addressed to “Admissions Committee”

The Law School Admission Council (LSAC) is a nonprofit corporation that provides unique, state-of-the-art products and services to ease the admission process for law schools and their applicants worldwide. Currently, 222 law schools in the United States, Canada, and Australia are members of the Council and benefit from LSAC’s services.
All law schools approved by the American Bar Association are LSAC members, as are Canadian law schools recognized by a provincial or territorial law society or government agency.
If you earned your JD from a US law school, purchase only the Document Assembly Service (DAS). LSAC will include copies of your transcripts and letters of recommendation in your law school report, and you will be able to transmit electronic applications through LSAC. No transcript analysis is necessary.
If you earned your first degree in law from an institution outside of the United States, you may purchase the Document Assembly Service (DAS) to have your letters of recommendation, unauthenticated transcripts, English proficiency score(s), and electronic applications forwarded to participating law schools. In addition to DAS, you may need to purchase the International Transcript Authentication and Evaluation Service (ITAES), includes the authentication and evaluation of transcripts/mark sheets, copies of degrees/diplomas, degree and graduation certificates, and rank statements so that US law schools better understand your academic credentials.
