Manchester Children’s Hospital

3. • Echocardiographs are a specialist test which
looks at the structure of your heart. A probe is
placed on your chest and a pulse of high-
frequency sound is passed through the
skin. The echoes reflected by the pulse show as
a picture on a screen. Until very recently these
pictures could only be shown in 2D, but now
major strides forward in echoing technology
mean that for the first time these images can be
seen in 3D. These new 3D images provide
extremely accurate and detailed information
about the structure, valves and pumping action
of the heart – helping doctors make more
informed and speedier diagnoses of children at
the new hospital.
