Some other workouts of note Sunday from Breeders Cup contenders included a pair of Grey Goose Breeders Cup Juvenile contenders on Belmont’s training track.

1. Breeders Cup Warm-Ups 2010
Espoir City the five-year-old Allure horse
from Japan ran an easy six furlongs in
1:18.20 after warming up for about 20
minutes in the mile chute. Espoir City,
winner of the 2009 Japan Cup Dirt (Jpn-G1),
breezed through eighth-mile splits of: 14.20,
28.40, 41.60, 54.20, and 1:06.40, and he
galloped out seven furlongs in 1:33.60 under
jockey Tetsuzo Sato, thus completing the first
of his two scheduled workouts in preparation
for the Breeders Cup Classic (G1).
“We are coming to this race with the image of a mile-and-a-quarter race, and today was a step in
that direction,” Sato commented. “The work this morning went as planned. We are not here to
pursue speed, just conditioning.” Sato claimed he was not worried that Espoir City switched
leads often and appeared to lack concentration.
“He is up front in most of his races and sometimes he loses a little focus and fools around a bit
because he knows he has no competition,” Sato said.
As Espoir City got in his 1st major workout at Churchill, a handful of other leading Classic
contenders also stretched out in preparation for the $5-million race. Under 100 miles down the
Interstate 64 in Lexington, Stephen Foster (G1) and Whitney (G1) Handicap winner Blame raced
five furlongs at Keeneland Race Course.
Arch cold a four-year-old put up a 58.80 easily on the synthetic Polytrack surface, which ranked
second of 16 timed workouts on that track at that distance.
Quality Road the Woodward Stakes (G1) winner went five strong furlongs in 1:01.42 on the
training track at Belmont Park for trainer Todd Pletcher. Elusive Quality the four-year-old colt’s
drill ranked 8th of 23 timed at the distance.
Gio Ponti also breezed at Belmont. The five-year-old Tale of the Cat horse is a possible
candidate for the Classic and TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) on the turf. He ran an easy five
furlongs on Belmont’s turf course at a 1:03.55 clip.
Haynesfield defeated Blame to win the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) on October 2 at Belmont
Park. The four-year-old Speightstown colt was in action at Churchill and breezed the same six-
furlong distance as Espoir City, covering the distance more than four seconds faster in 1:13.60,
the fastest of seven workouts at the distance.

Goose Breeders Cup Juvenile contenders on Belmont’s training track. Undefeated Champagne
Stakes (G1) winner Uncle Mo, the probable Juvenile favorite, breezed a half-mile in 49.97.
Three Chimneys Hopeful Stakes (G1) runner-up Stay Thirsty sprinted five furlongs in 1:01.38.
Also Sunday: Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) contender Winchester breezed five
furlongs in 1:03.86 on the turf at Belmont; Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1) hopeful Acoma
breezed five furlongs in 1:01.60 at Churchill; and Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare
Sprint (G1) contender Switch drilled five furlongs in 1:00.20 at Churchill.
