2. History of Swansea City FC
• In July 2001, after relegation to the third tier of
English football, Swansea City FC was sold to
managing director, Mike Lewis for £1.
• After gaining promotion to the Premier League in
the 2011/12 season, Swansea became the first
Welsh team to play in the Premier League since
it’s beginning in 1992.
• In the 2012/13 season, Swansea won the
Capital One Cup, beating Bradford City 5-0 in
the final, held at Wembley Stadium. This was
the club’s first major trophy in its history.
3. The Fall
• The 1996/97 season was arguably Swansea’s
worst season in league football, winning just 8
out of 45 matches.
• At the end of the 2002/2003 season, they were
in the relegation zone in the third tier of English
Football.
• They had to win their last home game against
Hull City to keep their football league status.
• They won the match 4 - 2 with James Thomas
scoring a hat-trick.
4. The Rise
• Swansea prepared for success as they built a
new stadium called the Liberty Stadium in 2005.
• In the same season, Swansea were promoted to
the second tier of English football following an
18 game unbeaten run.
• Swansea remained in the second tier for 6 years
until the 2010/11 season, where they reached
the play-off finals against Reading and won the
match 4-2 with Scott Sinclair scoring a hat-trick,
gaining them promotion to the Premier League.
• The 2012/13 season was arguably their most
successful season in their history, finishing in the
top half of the table and winning their first major
trophy.

football, and are currently 10th in the table.
• Swansea sacked Michael Laudrup as manager
18 months after their Capital One Cup success
and appointed Garry Monk as player/manager.
• Swansea qualified for the Europa League after
winning the Capital One Cup, and played their
first European match in 22 years, beating Malmö
