Apple awards an additional $250 million from Advanced
Manufacturing Fund to Corning
Apple announced it is awarding $250 million from its Advanced
Manufacturing Fund to Corning Incorporated, supplier of precision glass
for iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad. The award builds on the $200 million
the company received from Apple’s Advanced Manufacturing Fund in
May 2017. The combined investment supports Corning’s research and
development into state-of-the-art glass processes, equipment and
materials integral to the delivery of next-generation consumer devices.

Cisco Announces Intent to Acquire Cloud Cherry
Cisco announced its intent to acquire privately-held Cloud Cherry based in
Salt Lake City, UT. Cloud Cherry is a Customer Experience Management
(CEM) company that provides customer journey mapping, out-of-the-box
integrations, and predictive analytics. Predictive analytics help contact centre
agents make real-time journey modifications such as up and cross-selling,
discounts, service modifications and more, to meet customer needs and
improve loyalty. Together, Cisco and Cloud Cherry will help companies
transform their contact center from delivering reactive care to providing
predictive support and move from isolated customer interactions to cohesive,
engaging experiences for improved business outcomes.

CenturyLink Acquires Video Delivery Innovator
Streamroot
CenturyLink, has acquired privately held Streamroot Inc., a leading
provider of disruptive technology, to improve video and static
content delivery within bandwidth constrained areas. The acquisition
represents another step in CenturyLink's commitment to innovation
as a leader in content delivery network (CDN) and Edge Compute
services. Streamroot's disruptive content delivery models enable
connected consumer devices such as smart phones, tablets,
computers, set-top consoles and smart TVs to participate in the
serving of premium content through a secure and private mesh
delivery. By incorporating consumer devices into this edge-based
delivery architecture, CenturyLink believes its customers will be able

Hitachi to Integrate Hitachi Vantara and Hitachi Consulting to

Keysight Technologies Reports Third Quarter 2019 Results
• GAAP revenue grew 8 percent to reach $1,087 million, when compared
with $1,004 million last year.
• Non-GAAP revenue grew 8 percent to reach $1,088 million. Non-GAAP
core revenue, which also excludes the impact of foreign currency changes
and revenue associated with businesses acquired or divested within the last
twelve months, increased 9 percent.
• GAAP net income was $159 million, or $0.83 per share, compared with
GAAP net income of $121 million, or $0.63 per share, in the third quarter
of 2018. This represents 32 percent year-over-year growth in GAAP
earnings per diluted share.
• Non-GAAP net income was $239 million, or $1.25 per share, compared
with $170 million, or $0.89 per share in the third quarter of 2018. This
represents 41 percent year-over-year growth in non-GAAP earnings per
diluted share.
• As of July 31, 2019, cash and cash equivalents totaled $1,394 million.

• Recurring revenue in Q2 2019 increased by 26% to $3.30 million
compared to $2.62 million in Q2 2018, and by 5% compared to $3.16
million in Q1 2019.
• Total revenue for Q2 2019 increased by 26% to $3.68 million
compared to $2.91 million in Q2 2018, and by 5% compared to $3.52
million in Q1 2019.
• Gross margin for Q2 2019 was 84% of total revenue compared to 83%

Slack Announces Second Quarter Fiscal Year 2020 Financial
Results
• Total revenue was $145.0 million, an increase of 58% year-over-year.
Revenue was negatively impacted by $8.2 million of credits related to
service level disruption in the quarter.
• Calculated Billings was $174.8 million, an increase of 52%
year-over-year.
• GAAP gross profit was $113.9 million, or 78.5% gross margin,
compared to $80.7 million, or 87.7% gross margin, in the second
quarter of fiscal year 2019. Non-GAAP gross profit was $126.3

Aptilo Launches a WiFi4EU Plug-and-Play Service for
Municipalities
Aptilo Networks announces the launch of a plug-and-play
service for municipalities taking part in the WiFi4EU initiative.
Aptilo’s new service provides login portals for the WiFi4EU
public Wi-Fi service and takes care of the consent and personal
data management required by GDPR. The European
Commission’s WiFi4EU initiative promotes free Wi-Fi
connectivity for citizens and visitors in public spaces
everywhere in Europe. Municipalities can apply for a 15,000
EUR voucher for purchase of equipment and installation.
WiFi4EU requires the municipality to provide a login portal for
the Wi-Fi service. The portal needs to integrate with the
WiFi4EU back-end to display the official WiFi4EU banner and
count the number of users. Another requirement is that a user
stays connected for 12 hours after login. To achieve this, the
user’s unique device ID (MAC address) is used to reconnect the
user. Many European countries consider the MAC address to be
personal data. To comply with these local legislations and
GDPR, the login portal must collect the user’s consent to save
their MAC address.

Nokia and Telefónica Peru to enable automated, digital mining operations
for Las Bambas, one of the world’s largest copper mines
Nokia and Telefónica Peru have signed a contract with Minera Las
Bambas, the world’s ninth largest copper mine, to enable digitalization
and automation projects at its site in Apurimac, Peru. The contract will
build and deploy a private LTE network 4,600 meters above sea level,
then perform an assessment of the mine applications in order to begin
services migration to the new network. The contract includes planning
the site’s capacity and providing technical support for the next five
years. As part of the deal, Nokia will deploy its LTE Radio Access
Network solution, including base stations, technical support and
training services to enable more reliable communications between
machines and people. The new network will improve existing wireless
service, allowing Las Bambas to deploy additional safety solutions and
reduce operating costs of its Tetra communication system. As the
network evolves further towards 5G, the Las Bambas mine will also
benefit from push-to-talk and push-to-video. Mining operations often
require highly reliable networks that can cover large outdoor sites.

Ho Chi Minh City. The launch positions Vietnam head to head with

rollout. Being first to 5G will allow Viettel and Nokia to play a crucial

economy. Nokia deployed the 5G network in a very short time frame,

Rogers now offers more IoT connectivity options for business

Rogers announced a reciprocal agreement with AT&T to extend
LTE-M coverage for IoT customers of both companies, throughout
Canada and the United States. Rogers IoT customers will now have the

network in Canada. This roaming agreement will benefit businesses

Microsoft and IIT Roorkee collaborate to augment learning on
quantum computing
Microsoft Garage India has partnered with Indian Institute of
Technology (IIT), Roorkee to conduct lectures on quantum computing
for a full semester. IIT’s BTech and MTech students can choose the
course as a pool elective. The course, which has been structured by IIT
Roorkee and Microsoft, will provide the students, access to Q#
Programming Language practical examples, Microsoft Quantum
Development Kit and Microsoft Quantum Faculty. Quantum
computing has taken a big leap in drawing attention from the student
community with its power to solve intricate challenges in no time.
Students are aware of quantum computing’s ability to run a myriad of
conflicting parameters and variables at a pace that is unparalleled.
This, however, also begets the need to provide this body of emerging
programmers with direct access to quantum programming in course of
their education. Microsoft’s quantum computing program which has
been running for more than 15 years, helps students understand the
technology, develop practical applications, and build the quantum
workforce of the future. Microsoft experts will provide engineers at IIT
Roorkee a unique approach to learn quantum computing with

Nokia and Smart set their sights on bringing Industry 4.0 to
Southeast Asia following 5G ‘standalone’ trial
Nokia and Smart, PLDT’s mobile arm, are working together to bring
Industry 4.0 to Southeast Asia. This follows the announcement that
Nokia and Smart were first in the Philippines, and the Southeast Asian
region, to complete a live 5G ‘standalone’ video call. Standalone refers
to systems, such as Nokia’s cloud native core solutions, that are
entirely 5G-based and do not rely on previous generations’ network
architecture. Standalone systems will become increasingly important
as the Philippines and the entire Southeast Asian region moves towards
Industry 4.0, in which industry becomes increasingly connected.
According to McKinsey and Company, Industry 4.0 is expected to
deliver between $216 billion and $627 billion in value amongst the
member economies of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
(ASEAN). A key component of this architecture is network slicing,
which allows service providers to partition their networks into discrete
‘slices’ to support specific use cases or sectors. Coupled with
ultra-reliable low-latency capability, network slicing will enable the
delivery of new use cases, such as real-time remote control of robotics,
autonomous transport vehicles and other enterprise-led 5G use cases.

Skytap Sets Strategy to Bring IBM POWER to Microsoft
Azure
Skytap announces a new collaboration with Microsoft to bring its
purpose-built cloud service for legacy applications, including IBM
POWER-based solutions, to Microsoft Azure. The service will provide
support for heterogeneous application stacks, including native support
for POWER workloads running on AIX, IBM i, and Linux. Skytap will
preview its service on a new class of Microsoft Azure bare metal this
year. Through this collaboration Skytap’s service on Microsoft Azure
will provide enterprises with a robust platform to enhance the value of
traditional applications without the major expense of replatforming. In
the 2018 Skytap Customer Survey, respondents indicated they are
enhancing applications running in Skytap with web services, mobile
capabilities, AI, and IoT. The cloud most cited was Microsoft Azure.
Furthering that customer goal, Skytap is providing a preview of what’s
possible when lifting-and-extending a legacy IBM i application using
DB2 on Skytap and augmenting it with Azure IoT Hub. The
application seamlessly spans old and new architectures, demonstrating
there is no need to completely rewrite rock solid IBM i applications to
benefit from modern cloud capabilities.
