Resources for the PCV
A little about me…

~ I am most recently
from Phoenix, Arizona
~ I live in
Berezanka, Ukraine
~ I arrived in Ukraine
with group 41, in March
2011
~ I have been a teacher
for almost 10 years
What that means:

               I have experience with
               teaching—preparing and
               implementing
               lessons, classroom
               management, and
               educational
               policy/procedure
What that DOESN‟T mean:

I was familiar with, and
prepared for, teaching in
Ukraine and the unique set
of challenges we all face
here: language
barriers, different school
and community culture, lack
of technology and other
resources
So, about these resources…
So, about these resources…

classrooms for a Peace Corps Volunteer?
So, about these resources…

classrooms for a Peace Corps Volunteer?

~ Why not just teach from the book?
Hmmmm….the book….

Oftentimes, the books are great
resources, of course!

However, sometimes there are
errors, or lessons that aren‟t
always helpful or at your
students‟ current level…
Plus, let‟s be honest…Which is
more fun?

Why “RAISE”?

As volunteers, we are here to raise
the expectations that we have of
ourselves as individuals, the
expectations that others have of us as
volunteers, and the school and
community‟s expectations of the
greatness that they can achieve…in
any way we can.
Resources help you achieve these
goals…

 Increase student
  motivation and
  engagement
 Provide sustainable
  resources for teachers
 Create sustainable
  lessons and activities for
  future students/teachers
 Change methodology to
  increase retention and
  application

~Here‟s a tip:
Keep a binder (or several) fully
  stocked and organized with „stock‟
  flashcards, dialogues, activities, board
  games, and puzzles.
You can reuse them for MANY
  different activities and lessons.
Please take notes in your flipbook!

Reduce your workload!

Creating a set of “stock” resources that can be used
to teach many different themes helps you reduce
your workload. You create the resources once, but
with proper organization and storage, use them many
times.
Here are some examples of
“Stock” Resource themes:

These are useful…

 In many different lessons in school
 In English clubs for children
 In English clubs for beginner adults
 In tutoring sessions
 In „emergency‟ situations
Some thoughts on Electronic
Resources

Don‟t overlook the power of your
Internet connection.

With it you can:
~Use resources from other PCV‟s
~Find examples, texts, and activities
~Share your resources with PCV‟s and
your community
Some thoughts on Consumable
versus Sustainable Resources

It is true that many of your resources will be
made out of paper goods and, therefore, will
not last forever.

However, you can make them more
sustainable if you share them by creating
blogs, PowerPoint presentations, or
documents that you can post online for
others to access.
And now you are thinking…
And now you are thinking…
No Worries!

Trust Me…
It‟s easy.
Invest in a Children’s Book

               Copy or trace
               pictures

               Follow themes

               Use
               translations
Or trace from the Internet!

You can find just about anything
if you use the word “clipart”
Where do you get resources
