1. What kind of media institution
might distribute your media
product and why?
2. AS media product
As a group (Sophie, Belle and I) had to come up with an initial idea for an opening
sequence. We needed to think about the genre narrative. As a group we decided to
create a Romantic Comedy.
Name of the film ‘The Morning After The Night Before’
Our film is targeted to a specific age demographic of women aged 15-30 years old.
Once the genre was chosen we were able to start the planning and preparation stages.
We created a low budget independent British film, instead of creating a Hollywood
block buster. We will have to look at specific distribution methods deciding on how we
can get the most successful outcome.
3. Production Company (idents)
Before creating our opening sequence we needed to
create our own production company.
This production company will be featured at the
beginning of our sequence.
The name of our production company is called SOJA
film, merging both Jade and Sophie together.
Our ident is shown to the right.
4. Vertigo films
Vertigo films was founded in 2002, it is an independent film
product film company produced by Allan Niblo and James
Richardson.
Vertigo films distribute films but they also product certain
films. Vertigo films are a British company based in London,
supporting British films.
The company has produced 28 films and distributed 35 films
all from a range of different genres.
Vertigo films is a suitable distributor for our low budget film,
Vertigo films is renounded for disturbing new producers
trying to make it in the industry.
Vertigo films is also a reliable
5. Alternative distribution strategies
TV is another way a film can be distributed. Channels like BBC 3, ITV and channel
4.
BBC 3 is now an online site this will appeal to our target audience, because our
film is aimed at a young demographic.
The company BBC are a well known channel, this would be good publicity for the
film. They are interested in new upcoming companies and film producers.
Social media has got bigger and is now an option when it comes to the
distributing a film.
6. Example films
To get a better understanding as a group we had a look at similar films that had been produced
and distributed.
‘Monsters’ is a low budget British film, directed by Gareth Edwards and produced by Vertigo
Films. Their distribution strategies were successful creating 10x the production budget. Having
a very small budget of only £500,000. Vertigo films, released the film onto DVD very soon after
the cinema release, this was a very successfully distributed film.
The second film we looked at was ‘Iron Sky’ This was also a low budget film of 7.5 million euros
although this seems like a lot in the film industry this is still a small budget. Iron sky was
produced by Blindspot Pictures and distributed by Revolver Entertainment. However Revolver
Entertainment did a very poor job in releasing it. In the UK it only had one day released into the
cinema then the next week was released on DVD. Fans were encouraged to take to social media
and complain, this lead to a 7 day cinema release. This helped the box office takings but didn’t
cover the initial damage.
Looking back at both films it is clear to see that the distribution process is very important,
without a successful distribution process there will not be a successful movie.
