Romeo and Juliet:- Act 3 Scene 1

"One fairer than my love? The all-seeing sun, Ne'er saw her match since fi8rst the world
begun".In act 3 scene 1 fate occurred which is referred to as "Star-cross'd". This scene
occurs immediately after Romeo and Juliet get married. The characters involved in this
scene are Romeo, Benovlio, Tybalt and Mercutio.

In Act 3 Scene 1 starts with Benvolio suggesting Mercutio that they should go, fearing
that a brawl is going to happen. Tybalt enters in search for Romeo but addresses then
in a very ride way. The Mecutio and Tybalt are about to fight when Romeo enters. Both
Romeo and Benvolio are trying to stop the quarrel. But Merctio ends up being stabbed
by Tybalt and dies under Romeo’s arms. Romeo then realizes that Juliet has made him
soft so he is seeking for revenge. Romeo kills Tybalt and then thinks about what he has
done. All citizens, including the Montague’s and Capult’s gather around the scene
where Benvolio tells them what happened. The scene ends with Romeo being exiled
from Verona. This essay will summarize the scene by discussing the key characteris-
tics, actions and motivations of the key characters. It will also show the dramatic signifi-
cance of the scene.

Benvolio is known as a peace-loving and reliable young man. In Act 3 Scene 1 Benvolio
is very anxious because he didn’t want a fight to occur. Benvolio tells Mercutio that they
should leave before the Capulet’s arrive. Benovlio says “The day is hot, he capels are
aboard and, if we meet, we shall notʼscape a brawl”. He says this right at the start of the
scene. Bevolio then becomes more tense because the brawl between Tybalt and Mer-
cutio is just within striking distance till Romeo enters. Both Benvolio tries to convince
Mercutio to fight somewhere at least because everyone was gazing on them. Benvolio
says “We talk here in the public haunt of men: Either withdraw unto some private place,
Or reason coldly of your grievances, Or else depart. Here all eyes gaze on us”. Benvo-
lio’s says this before Romeo enters the scene. After Tybalt has been killed Benvolio
urges Romeo to flee. Benvolio says “Romeo, away, be gone!, The citizens are up, and
Tybalt slain. Stand not amazed: the prince will doom thee death, If thou art taken:
hence, be gone, away!”. When all citizens, Montagues and Capulets gather around the
scene Benvolio tells the Prince what happen. Benvolio says “O noble prince, I can dis-
cover all, The unlucky manage of this fatal brawl: There lies the man, slain by young
Romeo, That slew thy kinsman, brave Mercutio”. Benvolio is a person who likes peace,
in this Act 3 scene 1 Benvolio is looking for peace between Mercutio and Tybalt. Benvo-
lio also does the same thing in the beginning of the play. In Act 1 Scene 1 during the
brawl Benvolio explains that he is merely trying to keep peace but Tybalt says that he
replies by saying “Consort? What, dost thou make us minstrels? An thou make minstrels
of us, look to hear nothing but discords. Hereʼs my fiddlestick. Hereʼs that shall make
you dance. Zounds, “consort”. Both Mercutio start sparring with words till Romeo enters
the scene. When Romeo enters the scene Tybalt is distracted from Mercutio. Romeo
has a talk with Tybalt on why he should love him. Romeo dishonors himself so Mercutio
steps in. Before he steps he says to himself “O calm, dishonourable, vile submission!
Alla stoccata carries it away”. Then the brawl between Mercutio and Tybalt begins Ro-
meo tries to stop the fight but Mercutio ends up being killed under Romeo’s arms. Be-
fore Mercutio dies he says “A plague o' both your houses”. He says that because he
was calling a plague down on both the Montagues and the Capulets because their feud
has led to his death. Mercutio’s character has stayed the same throughout the whole
play until Act 3 scene 1. Throughout the play Mercutio has been acting cocky and
bawdy esspecially when the capulets are around. The moment Romeo dishonors him-
self Mercutio becomes furious and more serious than usual.

Tybalt is known as a Adventurous, Arrogant and independent. In act 3 scene 1 Tybalt is
very blood-thirsty. When he first enters the scene he is in search for Romeo. He tried
asking Mercutio but he’d just start joking around. Tybalt asks him whether he has been
with Romeo. Tybalt says “Mercutio, thou consortʼst with Romeo”. The sparring between
words started, Romeo then enters the scene so Tybalt is distracted from Mercutio. Ty-
balt forces Romeo to fight by calling him a villain but Romeo refuses since they are not
relates. Tybalt says to Romeo “Romeo, the love I bear thee can afford, No better term
than this: thou art a villain”. Tybalt tells Romeo that he will not forgive him for the harm
he’s done. Romeo then dishonors himself which made Mercutio realize that he needed
to step-in and fight Tybalt. Tybalt ends up stabbing Mercutio and dies. Romeo then
seeks for revenge so he kills Tybalt. Tybalts last few words before his death was “Thou,
wretched boy, that didst consort him here, Shalt with him hence”. Tybalt also tried to
get into a fight with Romeo in Act 1 Scene 5. In that scene Tybalt overhears Romeo and
recognizes his voice. Tybalt then calls his rapiers to kill Romeo but inquires as to the
cause of his excitement. Tybalt says to Romeo that he is here to insult him.

Romeo is known as a Mature, loving and compassionate person. In act 3 scene 1 when
Romeo enters the scene Tybalt is distracted from Mercutio. Tybalt attempts to provoke
Romeo into a fight, but Romeo refuses because, unknown to others they are relatives
after Romeo getting married to Juliet. Romeo tries to respect Tybalt but he doesn’t un-
derstand. Romeo says to tybalt “Tybalt, the reason that I have to love thee, Doth much
cannot be much”. Romeo was seeking for revenge for what Tybalt did to his friend. Ro-
meo says to Tybalt “Either thou or I, or both, must go with him”. When Romeo kills Ty-
balt Benvolio tells him to flee. Romeo then says “Oh, I am fortuneʼs fool!”. Romeo says
that because he is upset he killed Tybalt, thus destroying his future with his beloved Ju-
liet. He realizes he had no control over it what so ever. The scene ends with Romeo be-
ing exiled from Verona. Before this scene Romeo and Juliet get married. Romeo be-
lieves that Juliet has made him soft which results to his actions against Tybalt.

The overall context of Romeo and Juliet in Act 3 scene 1 is a very important scene in
Romeo and Juliet. The transition theme starts from romance and ends with tragedy.
With Mercutio’s death and Romeo’s banishment act 3 scene 1 starts the chain of trage-
dies which will occur in upcoming scene’s. The effect that it has on the audience is that
it makes them feel sorry for Romeo because as Romeo has done nothing but love Ty-
balt and tender the capulet name. The conflict in this scene indicates to the audience
that something bad is about the occur.

Citizens of Verona, Montagues and Capulets. Today we gather here to pay tribute to the

parent's ancient grudge.

Today' we say our last goodbyes to both. Although they died at a young age, Romeo
and Juliet couldn't spend enough time with one another but know that they are in
heaven they will not leave each others side. Life was short for them but their love is ev-
erlasting.

Romeo wants juliet just like how filings want the magnet. If there was a wall built be-
tween Romeo and Juliet, Romeo would somehow find another way just to get to Juliet.
This is how much Romeo's is to Juliet. Romeo is a mature, loving and compassionate
person. Romeo was always loved and always tried to keep Juliet happy. Juliet is a very
obedient person. Juliet will be remembered for her bravery in being in loving with Ro-

himself in was when we was banished from Verona for killing Tybalt. He was very upset
he killed Tybalt, thus destroying his future with his beloved Juliet. He realizes he had no
control over it what so ever. Juliet nevertheless also found herself in situations she
couldn't come out of. Juliet was once forced to marry Paris earlier then when the wed-
ding is suppose to be but she but she wanted to delay the marriage but nothing could
be done about it. She then gets help from me, I decided to give her a sleeping lotion
that had her sleeping for quite a while but thats what led to both their deaths.

didn't receive that letter so everything turned from good to worst. One of Romeo's fellow
friend who happened to pass by the church where to funeral was told Romeo that Juliet
was dead. Romeo rushes to Verona to see Juliet and he arrives there he is hear bro-
ken. He decides to drink the poison given to him by The apothecary. He drinks the poi-
son, then all of a sudden Juliet wakes up and Romeo was very surprised but it was too
late, Romeo has already drank the poison and the he dies and Juliet decides to go with
him and she commits suicide.

I believe that it is fate the caused Romeo and Juliet's death. It is fate when the letter I
wrote was not received by Romeo unforeseen circumstances and it is fate when Romeo
decided to kill himself. Maybe these two lovers were fated to love and die for the greater
good of Verona.

and sometimes stormy seas of life.
