 Healing occurs in four stages
I. vascular response phase,
II. inflammatory,

13. I. Healing by First Intention
 In healing by first intention the sutured wound
heals without infection or separation at the edges.
There are minimal granulation tissues present and
thus a small scar ensures. The clean surgical wounds
are healed by this process.
 When wounds heal by first intension healing,
granulation tissue is not visible and scar formation is
minimal.

14. II. Healing by Second Intention (Healing by Granulation)
 In this type the edges of the wound are not
approximated. As a result large amount of granulation
tissue is formed to fill up the gap in the wound. The
resulting scar tends to be large. Contaminated and
infected wounds are healed by this method. Any wound,
in which there is extensive tissue loss, wound healing
takes longer period.
III. Healing by third intention
 In this there is a combination of healing by
primary and secondary intention. Either the wound is
initially left open and later approximated or initially
sutured and later break open and the healing occur by
filling in by granulation tissue. It is used for deep
wounds.
