02/17/11 Let’s take a look at what Cognos 10 Business Intelligence is in general – and we consider Cognos 10 a revolutionary BI workspace delivered on a proven platform with seamless upgrade. Talking technically is of course an evolution of a very proven Cognos BI platform foundation and it is not a brand new technology which allows our customers to seamlessly upgrade. A revolution is what we actually offer on top of the platform and it is truly a unified BI workspace which gives all types of users a new level of freedom: - Freedom to THINK, which is provided by a fully interactive and customized user workspace. We gave this topic a hopefully good review before lunch in a session dedicated to IBM Cognos Business Insight user workplace. - Freedom to CONNECT and INTERACT with others, which is provided by very powerful and easy-to use collaboration functions of Cognos 10 BI – and this is our topic today. - And last, but not the least, Freedom to DO whatever you like with your BI content and consume it in any possible way – on mobile devices, as disconnected reports (also a new feature of Cognos 10), in real time – and real-time analytics is now an integral part of the platform.
02/17/11 Cognos 10 delivers built-in collaboration and social networking to fuel the exchange of ideas and knowledge that naturally occurs in the decision-making process and yet today is lost to the organization in disconnected meeting notes, manual processes, emails and people’s notebooks. It does this by enabling you to form communities, capture annotations, opinions and share insights with others around the information itself. The new Cognos 10 collaboration and social networking builds the decision excellence of the organization and a corporate memory to capitalize on in the future by making the intangible, tangible so you can: Establish decision networks to discuss issues, share insights and align to decisions. By providing built-in social network capabilities, you can initiate activities, engage others with expertise, post messages, files, links, and discuss or review others' opinions so everyone can work together towards a common goal Attach greater business context to the information itself by capturing annotations down to the cell level, definitions of terms, data lineage, and how decisions were made. This added business context builds a full repository of decision history to raise the knowledge capital of the organization. Support workflow to establish accountability, provide decision templates, sequence next steps and ensure communication and coordination engages the right people at the right time to accelerate alignment and action With built-in collaboration and social networking , Cognos 10 harnesses the collective intelligence of the organization to connect people and insights and gain alignment
02/17/11 In this presentation we will be focusing on IBM Cognos Collaboration capabilities in detail
02/17/11 We will also be speaking about Annotations in more detail
02/17/11
02/17/11 Collaboration is all around us. It seems that everywhere we look, we hear about more and more people connecting to each other through social networks. Chances are, most, if not all of you are currently one of the 500 million active Facebook users connecting with your friends, or one of the 75 million LinkedIn members looking to grow their professional network, or maybe even right at this very moment, you are typing out one of 600 tweets that happen each second, sharing your perspective on this very event … With millions upon millions of people connecting to each other in different ways, these technologies can be a very powerful way to easily connect with others, build stronger personal relationships, stay connected with valuable friends, share your thoughts with others, or even to share pictures and remember good times. The question is…how can you make this technology work for you? How can this technology be leveraged from a business perspective? How can your business leverage this technology to outperform?
02/17/11 Today there is a divide between the business world and these powerful technologies… In our social lives, this new way of connecting with others has completely changed the way relationships work, but unfortunately hasn’t yet made its way into today’s organizations.
02/17/11 Collab makes what’s happening on the right, come over to the left Allows people to use type of collab they’re used to at home, in the workplace, along with the benefits htat come with it… IBM Cognos Collaboration bridges this gap by connecting people and insights to gain alignment in your organization.
02/17/11 Clearly, social software for business is crucial,
02/17/11 On a personal level, these are the things we want out of our social networks. We want to connect with our friends, share pictures, information, and interact with them. We want to be constantly updated on what our friends are doing, thinking, and their perspectives on recent happenings. We want to have a repository for past events such as picture albums, discussions, etc… So how does this translate into helping organizations outperform? The only thing that changes in social networking for business is what you are discussing.
02/17/11 Cognos 10 enables organizations to outperform by providing collective intelligence with built-in collaboration and social networking. Collaborating using a social networking solution in conjunction with BI allows you to: Easily connect with others for building stronger relationships with people in your organization. Ensure greater context from your information. Builds a reliable corporate memory.
02/17/11 Note: you can play and pause video at each step by left-clicking. - You start your workday like any other day, but today you want to see some information about your world. - You create or receive a report based on the data you’d like to know about. - Oh! Looks like something unexpected is happening! - You start to think about the people in your network who you think would be able to add their perspective, or help with their expertise…and your colleague comes to mind. - You decide to connect with that person and show them your report. - Your colleague also sees the anomaly occurring. - So you both put your heads together to decide what action to take. - You then come up with a decision! - And, of course, your decision impacts your organization.
02/17/11 Did you include all the right people in this decision-making process? Did you have all the relevant information to make the right decision? Takeaway: In this example, the decision that you made, just like the information you received, was one-dimensional
02/17/11 Note: you can play and pause video at each step by left-clicking. - You start your workday just like before, like any other day, and you receive that same report. - The same problem seems to be taking place… - You start to think about the people in your network once again, but wait, your network has been greatly expanded through the power of your organization’s social software…and now you are able to tap into many more of your colleagues and much more expertise. - You now easily connect with the relevant people and decide to show them your report. - All your relevant contacts now come to the table with their own expertise, and their own perspectives on the information in question. - Now you can have a full-faceted discussion with all parties involved and you can take everyone’s opinion into account before making a decision. - You then make with an informed decision with everyone relevant involved. - And, of course, once again, your decision impacts your organization.
02/17/11 Establish decision networks to work formally or informally together to discuss issues, share insights and align to decisions. By providing built-in social network capabilities, you can initiate activities, engage others with expertise, post messages, files, links, and discuss or review others' opinions so everyone works together towards a common goal.

02/17/11 Annotations Demonstration. Demo Script: - IBM Cognos 10 Business intelligence fosters collaboration with annotations on key business reports and dashboards all directly from within IBM Cognos Business Insight - Suppose a Business User sees a value on a Business Insight shared workspace, and she wishes to draw some attention to it. A simple mouse click and she can add her comment… for example, pointing out an anomaly that needs to be followed up on, or simply adding perspective to explain the reason for said anomaly. - Whenever a comment has been entered on a shared dashboard, the thread of comments is viewable to everyone that has access to the dashboard. Whenever any user hovers over a cell with an annotation, all comments for that cell are displayed. - Annotations made at the cell level after being drilled, are still displayed at the summary level so others can see them even if they are viewing the data in a different way. - Should this business user decide to export their information to Microsoft® Excel or a PDF, the annotations which provide the perspectives or context on the data are not lost. The annotations are automatically preserved as endnotes. - Annotations can be applied at the cell level, as we’ve just seen, or at the object level for an entire list or chart. - Business users can collaborate with one another directly within the content they use every day to run their various activities, departments, and business units, by sharing their perspectives and adding another dimension to their relevant information.
