R22 REFRIGERANT GAS BAN IN AIR CONDITIONING © Capitol Group 2010 From 1st January 2010, it became illegal to use virgin hydro chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) such as R-22, which is a commonly used refrigerant gas when servicing and maintaining air conditioning equipment. Until the 31st December 2014, temporary use of recycled/recovered R-22 may still be possible but availability could be limited and supply costs may be considerably higher. From 1st January 2015, the use of R-22 will be prohibited and any air conditioning system which uses R-22 will be banned. The regulation also calls for all operators of HCFC refrigeration systems to take "all precautionary measures practical" to prevent and minimise leakage. It states that all fixed equipment systems with a refrigerant charge of greater than 3kg will require an annual check for leakage. This annual check must be undertaken by qualified engineers only and who will be required to properly recover any HCFC refrigerant removed from an air conditioning system. All Capitol Group engineers are fully trained and qualified to undertake this type of work on behalf of our clients. The Captiol Group are here to assist our clients manage the transition of their R-22 systems and will help them to develop a corporate strategy to ensure you are compliant with the new legislation. CASE STUDIES (1) © Capitol Group 2010 Detailed below is an example of the type of project that the Capitol Group have undertaken in the past on behalf of our clients. Our projects can range from a few hundred pounds to multi-million pound installations and can be from the supply and installation of a single split air conditioning system to a complete new build development including Design and Build projects: Project W H Smith, East Grinstead Value £100k Client W H Smith Main Contractor Capitol Group On 28th January 2010 the W H Smith shop on East Grinstead High Street had a fire on the sales floor which caused major damage to the shop fixtures, fittings and services, rendering the shop unusable. The Capitol Group attended an emergency site meeting on the 29th January with the Regional Surveyors to remedy getting the shop open for trading. It was agreed the damage was beyond repair and would therefore require the shop to remain closed and a complete fit-out would be implemented, with the main objective being to minimise the closure time. Our remit was to fully strip out the shop of all flooring, ceilings, services, fixtures and fittings along with cleaning all smoke damaged areas. We were then required to install a complete new M&E package comprising of 5no. Toshiba indoor cassette type heat pump air conditioning systems. All the electrical circuits had to be removed, and a complete new re-wire of all circuits installed including fire protection and lighting. There was 150m2 of new Amtico flooring laid and 150m2 of new suspended grid ceiling installed with all fittings. All the exposed surfaces were sealed and decorated with the roof above being repaired and supplied with a 10 year guarantee. The work was tested, certificated and handed over for the shop to recommence trading on the 5th February 2010. The project took just 8 days from the emergency call-out to the completed refurbishment and client hand over.
CASE STUDIES (2) © Capitol Group 2010 Detailed below is a further example of the type of project that the Capitol Group have undertaken in the past on behalf of our clients. Project Gambado, Watford Value £1.2 Million Client Gambado Limited Designer Portland’s Main Contractor Capitol Group Gambado are a children's play venue, offering children the opportunity to play, party and explore in some of the most exciting indoor play venues in the world. In July 2008, Gambado acquired a new site at the Woodside Leisure Park, Watford and awarded the Capitol Group as the principle contractor for the complete fit-out package, including building, mechanical and electrical, fire detection, intruder alarm and managing the client directs (play frames, dodgems, climbing walls etc.) The project overview was to design and install a completely new M&E package, including fire protection and alarms, the build aspect was to strip out all the existing internal layout, including walls, floors and finishes and install new partitions, floors and ceilings as per design. There were numerous bespoke elements to the design, such as the seating and tables that were manufactured by our carpentry shop, along with some feature scenery which was fabricated and installed on site by our carpenters; for example 5m high beach finished tree features and panelling. The decorating was also non-standard in that there were bands of colours that interlaced through the whole building from floor to ceiling at 6m in height; these were marked out by hand and painted by our in-house decorators. The project had a 12 week programme that was achieved on time and handed over to our client in October 2008, ready for opening.

They have also proved resourceful at times of great frustration and difficulties, and they also showed commitment to programming and quality of workmanship. In each case the client has been satisfied with the approach to the project and has praised their ethic of get the job done." Patrick Inns IEng ACIBSE Partner Calford Seaden LLP, London As the fastest growing retailer in Europe we have used the services of Capitol Group for some considerable length of time for their Mechanical and Maintenance services and have always found their service to be both professional and reliable combined with their understanding of our specific needs to ensure projects are delivered on time and budget. We would have no hesitation in recommending the Capitol Group to other retailers. Bruce Springer Store Development “ We have always found their service to be of a very high standard, the key positives from our perspective are that they provide a 24/7, 365 days a year service. They are always there in an emergency and have bent over backwards to ensure we are looked after no matter what the problem, which is very refreshing. Capitol Group also completed the fit-out of our Watford site between August and October 2008, they achieved the development on time and within budget and I would have no hesitation in recommending this company for new site development or for ongoing site maintenance works." R22 REFRIGERANT GAS BAN IN AIR CONDITIONING © Capitol Group 2010 From 1st January 2010, it became illegal to use virgin hydro chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) such as R-22, which is a commonly used refrigerant gas when servicing and maintaining air conditioning equipment. • 13.
