1. TWO BANKS & A SQUARE
Thinking “Outside the Box”
2. COMMUNITY CENTER/SQUARE PROJECT
HISTORY
In 2011, the GPL began planning for an expansion project that would include a
much-needed second meeting room space as well as provide additional seating for
WI-FI/studying/socializing. The Friends of the GPL paid for an architectural plan
that would have added approximately 2000 sq. ft. to the back of the existing
building.
In the fall of 2013, BMO Harris announced that they would be closing their branch
here in Gillett, and our library changed their focus from remodeling their existing
structure to reconfiguring the bank building to meet community needs. The GPL
was able to purchase the bank using only donated funds (no taxpayer money was
used) in May of 2014.
3. COMMUNITY CENTER/SQUARE PROJECT
THE PLAN
The GPL has bought the bank (literally!); we now take up space in two
former bank buildings.
There are 3 main phases to this project:
PHASE ONE
Create two meeting room spaces in
the bank building/add a second
bathroom/add display space
PHASE TWO
Convert the library’s meeting room
space into library space which would
provide more seating for
Wifi/studying/socializing as well as
more shelving for collections
PHASE THREE
Create a COMMUNITY SQUARE
around both buildings utilizing
community input from city
government, area businesses,
community civic groups/clubs, school
district...
