Isthmus of Panama French in trouble Mismanagement Yellow Fever Abandoned project after 10 years Offers building rights to US $100 million (1889) By 1901, price dropped to $40 million & Congress approved, but still needed to obtain a lease from Colombia

President Roosevelt helped instigate the Panamanian Revolution to overthrow the Colombian government
The revolution was successful and the US recognized Panama as an independent nation
US negotiated Hay-Bunau- Varilla Treaty which gave us the land for the canal
We paid Panama $10 million for the strip of land to build the canal and a $250,000.00 yearly rental fee,[object Object]

The Panama Canal Today Remained a territory of the US for 75 years Given back to Panama in 1999
Foreign Policy in Early 1900s “Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.” (TR, 1901) TR’s “big stick” = US Navy Allowed TR to conduct an aggressive foreign policy
Roosevelt Corollary AKA Roosevelt’s “Big Stick Policy” Corollary = extension of a previously accepted idea  Corollary = Monroe Doctrine TR denied interest in acquiring more territory Instead, wanted “to see neighboring countries stable, orderly, and prosperous.”
US as World Po-Po However…. IF countries  engaged in activities harmful to the interests of the US  Governments collapsed THEN the US would be forced to exercise “an international police power”
