2. INTERCHANGEABLE PARTS
Eli Whitney first
developed this idea in
1801
This invention made it
so that if a product
part failed, another
could be ordered
without having to order
a whole new product
Whitney first used this
idea with gun
parts, but production
was expensive and
dif ficult
3. RAILROAD
Samuel Homfray funded the
development of a steam-
powered vehicle that would
replace the horse-drawn
wagons or carts on the
tramways
This development began in
1803
The vehicle was actually built
by Richard Threvithick
4. STEAMBOAT
The steamboat was invented
by Rober t Fulton in 1 807
-Fulton made the
Clermont, which was a vessel
that he put a steam engine in.
-In 1 807, the Clermont went
up the Hudson River from New
York City to Albany.
-The invention of the
steamboat completely
revolutionized America's
water ways, and made
traveling and transpor ting
goods much easier
-The invention also helped in
opening the west and the
south, and made the
transpor t of manufactured
necessities quicker and
cheaper
5. COTTON GIN
Eli Whitney invented
the cotton gin in
1793, but it was not
officially patented until
1807
Was used to clean
cotton more efficiently
and quickly
Revolutionized industry
because cotton could
be produced more
quickly and could
become a more stable
and useful crop for
Americans, thus
boosting the American
economy.
6. TIN CAN
Peter Durand first
patented the tin can in
1810
Brian Donkin and John
Hall opened the first tin
can producing factory
Early cans were sealed
with lead which
ultimately lead to lead
poisoning
This revolutionized the
food industry because
it helped to preserve
the food so it would not
go to waste
7. THE REAPER
Invented by Cyrus
McCormick in 1831
The reaper cut,
threshed, and bundled
grain.
Was pulled through
the field by horses
Increased grain
production in America;
farmers could produce
10 acres of grain a
day as opposed to the
previous 2 or 3
8. ELECTRIC STREETCAR
Thomas Davenport
invented the first
electric motor in 1834
and a small electric
railway in 1835
This demonstrated
technological advances
in America
This invention was
dif ferent because it was
powered by an electric
motor, versus one that
runs on gasoline
9. STEEL PLOW
-The steel plow was
invented by John Deere
-It was invented in 1837
-The original wooden
plows that were brought
over to Illinois would not
work on the thick
Midwestern soil, as they
were easily broken.
-In 1837, Deere made a
steel plow that could get
through the thick soil
-This invention made
farming in the Midwest
possible, and Deere went
into the business of
manufacturing plows.
10. TELEGRAPH
-Invented by Samuel F. B. Mor se in
1 844
-The telegraph was a new form of
communicati on that used pulses
of electricity to transmit
information over wires
-Mor se recieved $30,000 from
Congress to fund his experiment
- Alongside the telegraph Mor se
Code was invented, which was a
series of dots and dashes that
represented letter s in the
alphabet.
-In 1 844, Mor se sent the message
"What hath God wrought?" from
Washington to Baltimore.
-The telegraph revolutioni zed
communication, and by 1 854,
there were 23,000 miles of
telegraph wire in use.
11. SEWING MACHINE
Invented by Elias Howe
in 1846
New machine out
stitched five hand-
sewers and was known
for its speed
Made producing
clothing quicker and
increased clothing
production in America
At first, the idea didn’t
catch on, then Howe
struggled with
imitators trying to
steal his idea
