2. BASIC CONCEPTS OF POLITICS AND GOVERNANCE
Means that man lives in a more “polis”. Man becomes man among others,
living in a society governed by laws and customs. The man develops his
potential and realize its natural end in a social context. This is the “good life.”
This is not an easy life, but a life of virtue is reflected in the highest good
(eudaimonia), often translated as happiness

Politics is concerned with issues, problems and activities
of the state while political science is concerned on how the
state originated its nature and its functions.

• While politics deals with power in society in general, and
polity refers to the political institution through which power is
distributed and exercised.
• Power refers to the ability to have one’s will carried out
despite the resistance of others.
• Governance specifically deals with power in government and
how this institution exerts power for the benefit of the society.
6. DIFFERENT FIELDS OF INTERESTS IN POLITICS AND
GOVERNANCE
• Political Theory - political theory is ‘a body of knowledge related to the
phenomenon of the state’. While ‘theory’ refers to ‘a systematic knowledge’,
‘political’ refers to ‘matters of public concern’. According to David Held
• Political methodology - has emerged as a distinct subfield of political science.
Political methodologists study existing statistical techniques and develop new
ways to use statistics to estimate and identify political effects and make sense of
political data.
• Comparative Politics - a field in political science characterized either by the use
of the comparative method or other empirical methods to explore politics both
within and between countries.
• International Relations - International relations, the study of the relations of
states with each other and with international organizations and certain
subnational entities (e.g., bureaucracies, political parties, and interest groups).

The knowledge of politics and governance is a critical
attribute of a citizen belonging to a certain state.
It not only helps in the participation of an individual in the
state but it also helps in safeguarding an individual against
bad government practices and abuse.
