6. Cecil Rhodes~ Cecil Rhodes was an English born South African businessman and politician. He founded the DeBeers diamond company. In 1890 Rhodes became Prime Minister of the Cape Colonies. He played a large role in The Boer War. He was the man who discovered the large mass of gold the Boers obtained, beginning the second Boer war. Rhodesia was named for Cecil Rhodes and the Rhodes scholarship fund was created by him.

7. Paul Kruger~ Paul Kruger was vice-president and later president of the Transvaal. He played a major role in the first Boer war. He is known for bargaining with the British so the Boers could maintain their independence. He became the President shortly after the first Boer war ended.

8. Jacobus Herculas de la Rey~ Jacobus Herculas de la Rey, nick named Koos de la Rey, was a field general on the Boer side in the Boer war. He was tasked to raise the siege of Kimberly. In the Battle of Modder River, Koos wanted his men to dig into the banks of the Modder River, and it was the first site of trench warfare in the war. He is known for his acts of chivalry towards enemies.

9. The Dynamite Monopoly The Dynamite Monopoly is what set the second Boer war in motion. In 1885 the British began to move into Boer territory having a great deal of interest in the discovery of gold in Witwatersrand, then the worlds largest deposit of gold . The Afrikaners were angered by this threat. In their anger they set a large tax on many gold products in 1898. The tax on a box of dynamite was 5 shillings ($0.50) of the cost of 5 pounds($10). The British were infuriated and the second Anglo- Boer war began in 1899.

10. The treaty of Vereeniging The Treaty of Vereeniging, or the Peace Treaty of Vereeniging, was signed on May 31, 1902 to officially end the second Boer war. It provided, for the Boers, the end of hostilities and the promise that some day the Transvaal could be self-governed, To avoid discussing the native enfranchisement issue until self-governed, The Afrikaners were to be paid £3,000,000 in reconstruction aid, the imprisonment of only Cape Afrikaner rebel leaders, and to allow the use of Dutch in the schools and in the courtroom. The British were ultimately the winners.

11. The great Boer war- by A. Conan Doyle Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, known for creating Sherlock Holmes, wrote of his first- hand accounts of the Boer war. He served as a doctor in the Boer war.

12. The Boer war Memorial The Boer War memorial stands in Darlington, England. It has 5576 subscribers. It is on the grounds of St. Cuthbert’s Church.
