This document discusses predictions for the future of technology. It references the film "The Truman Show" and how people increasingly curate their own lives for social media like performances. 3. For a while, a lot of the marketing and tech world
referenced this movie

4. Particularly the scene when Tom Cruise gets bombarded
with individually targeted ads

5. And Google and
Facebook’s targeting
and retargeting
options have
certainly made us
feel that way during
our online activities

6. But I think this movie predicted and still predicts the
future

7. And not just because it predicted reality television

8. Because as we share on Snapchat, Instagram,
Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, YouTube, etc…

9. We start acting in real life like we’re on camera

10. As our life’s moments are captured, curated, and shared
for our friends or the world to see

11. To the point that we manufacture our own on camera
moments…
…making our own ‘Truman Shows’

13. Maybe you’ve heard of Douglas Adams’ three laws of
technology adoption?
I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions
to technologies:
1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal
and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the
world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen
and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and
you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the
natural order of things.

they get technologically boring.”
Maybe you’ve heard of Clay Shirky’s axiom of tech +
sociology?

15. A while ago, I came up with my own law of technology
which is probably why you likely haven’t heard of it

16. New technology rarely completely replaces old
technology. We generally find a new purpose for “old
tech”

18. Cars didn’t replace horses. Horse riding evolved from
transportation to recreation

19. Photography didn’t replace painting. Impressionism,
cubism, surrealism and several other important art
movements emerged after the invention of the
camera.

20. And vinyl. Still around for hard-core audiophiles but
also found new life as a DJ’s instrument.

Only a human being can deal with the subtleties of
testimony and the the holistic thinking to try a case

31. And I doubt Miranda Rights will allow robot public
defenders to count as your legal counsel
