Affordable.The labor of volunteers and partner families, efficient building methods, modest house sizes and no-profit loans make it affordable for low-income families to purchase Habitat houses
The first Build Jared and me showed our skills with the hammer by helping to build a storage shed while Jeff helped out on building storage shelve for the shed. We also got a chance to show our painting skill to. Overall it was a fun experience and pretty soon the house will be finished and a family will be able to move in.
Teamwork – it is important to use team work when building things such as houses, sheds, and shelves. If you do not work as a team and follow the leader, your chances of succeeding in your goal are slim. There were times when it took more than one person to accomplish moving or lifting things. It was obvious the task oriented people were working in more of a team than those that were interested in socializing. Like Jarrod mentioned earlier, some people didn’t have a desire to be there. Such as a few girls who were more interested in taking pictures of themselves holding hammers.
This seems to be one of the most common issues when dealing with groups of people. Since taking this class, this specific situation has become a lot more apparent. It was almost as if someone got me to see the large elephant in the room.
It was very important for us to listen to the leaders that were there volunteering as well. Seeing how they had more experience in construction than we did, it was essential that we followed their instructions.
As I mentioned in the opening slide, Habitat for Humanity offers a unique experience for people to interact with others who may not be of the same race, sex, or religion. The people I was helping build shelves with consisted of one white female, one African American female, and the white male volunteer leader. We worked very well together and enjoyed each other’s company throughout the work day.
The individuals who qualify for a house have made some payments toward the home and have showed that they will use this house as an opportunity to better their future. The parents, in some of these cases, will now be able to lead their children toward better lives. To conclude, we now know that we were building more than just a home for someone, we were helping build a future.
