2. INTRODUCTION
A Long Beach, California, safety officer and instructor with nearly two
decades of experience in industrial safety education, Jeff Davis formerly
served as the safety instructor at Beacon Energy Services in Signal Hill.
Jeff Davis also possesses a teaching certificate with the Occupational
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA’s teaching initiatives
include the Outreach Training Program.
OSHA’s Outreach Training Program is a voluntary program designed to
instruct employees and workers on a variety of workplace safety topics.
The program includes 10-hour and 30-hour class curricula that
accommodate entry-level workers and beyond, and topics covered
range from avoidance and abatement to health hazard prevention and
general workplace safety. Furthermore, participants receive instruction
on workers’ rights and responsibilities, such as filing a complaint.
The program’s curriculum contains four components: general industry,
construction, maritime, and disaster site.
3. WORKPLACE SAFETY
Component courses review procedures and safety regulations
relevant to each industry and aim to provide participants with the
most updated information. Courses do not focus on OSHA
standards but instead emphasize the identification, control, and
prevention of safety and health hazards.
As a voluntary program, the Outreach Training Program does not
meet the training requirements detailed in most OSHA standards.
However, the program still delivers a number of benefits, such as
the promotion of safety culture through peer training. The
program uses hands-on teaching methods and tailors training
topics to suit the individual needs of each audience.
