Faith is believing in God and His promises based on the evidence, even when things are not seen. This belief in God brings about obedience to Him. True faith is not simply an intellectual belief, as even demons believe, but rather it is a belief that produces good works. Faith requires obedience to God and trusting in His promises for salvation and eternal life, even when facing trials, by keeping one's eyes fixed on Jesus Christ.
5. What is Faith?
Heb 11:1, 6 Now faith is the
substance of things hoped for, the
evidence of things not seen. But
without faith it is impossible to
please Him, for he who comes to
God must believe that He is, and
that He is a rewarder of those who
diligently seek Him.
6. Faith is ...
• Many seem to be unsure or even
mistaken about this question!
♦Faith is not without worry or care, but
faith is fear that has said a prayer. ~Author
Unknown
♦Reason is our soul’s left hand, Faith her
right. ~John Donne
♦Faith is spiritualized imagination. ~Henry
Ward Beecher
7. Must both begin & end with faith!
• Rom. 10:17 So then faith comes by
hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
• Rev. 2:10 "Do not fear any of those
things which you are about to suffer.
Indeed, the devil is about to throw some
of you into prison, that you may be
tested, and you will have tribulation ten
days. Be faithful until death, and I will
give you the crown of life.
8. Real Faith Works!
(Js. 2:14-26)
• Js 2:24 You see then that a man is
justified by works, and not by faith only.
♦ Even as clear as this passage it, many
still teach & preach that “faith alone/only”
will save you!
♦ If we have real faith it will always produce
real works!
• Cf. Js. 2:14, 17, 20 & 26!
9. I. What Faith Isn’t!
• Faith isn’t just someone simply believing in
God!
♦Js 2:19 You believe that there is one God.
You do well. Even the demons believe--and
tremble!
♦Jn 12:42 Nevertheless even among the
rulers many believed in Him, but because of
the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest
they should be put out of the synagogue;
10. Faith isn’t a “blind leap in
the dark!”
• Jn 20:25 The other disciples therefore said to
him, "We have seen the Lord." So he said to
them, "Unless I see in His hands the print of the
nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails,
and put my hand into His side, I will not believe."
• Jn 20:27 Then he said to Thomas, "Put your
finger here, and see my hands; and put out your
hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless,
but believing."
11. II. What Faith Is!
• Faith is a belief in God based on the evidence!
♦Ps. 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of
God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.
♦Rom 1:20 For since the creation of the world
His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being
understood by the things that are made, even
His eternal power and Godhead, so that they
are without excuse.
12. This belief in God brings
about obedience!
• Mk 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will
be saved; but he who does not believe will be
condemned.
• Heb 5:9 And having been perfected, He became
the author of eternal salvation to all who obey
Him.
• Rom 6:17 But God be thanked that though you
were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart
that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.
13. Faith is believing in the promises of
God even when we haven’t seen them!
• 2 Cor 5:1 & 7 For we know that if our
earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have
a building from God, a house not made with
hands, eternal in the heavens. For we walk by
faith, not by sight.
• 2 Cor 4:18 while we do not look at the
things which are seen, but at the things which
are not seen. For the things which are seen
are temporary, but the things which are not
seen are eternal.
14. Conclusion:
• Do we have faith in Jesus? What kind of
faith? A dead faith or a working faith?
• Have we acted upon this faith and come to
trust Him with our salvation?
• Are we walking by faith this morning, with our
eyes fixed on Jesus?
♦Heb 12:2 looking unto Jesus, the author and
finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was
set before Him endured the cross, despising
the shame, and has sat down at the right hand
of the throne of God.
