Advancing metadata practices in libraries
● Historically, libraries are metadata experts
● But metadata practices outside of libraries
are powerful and shifting
● Our catalogers and metadata librarians need
some help to learn, adopt, adapt
Opportunities of alternative scholarly
communication models
● New form: between link and blog post
● New players: from outside libraries, from
inside with new ideas and skills
● New medium: Wordpress + ???
● It can be easy to contribute
● Get something started
● Introduce more library metadata folks to new
ideas and how they apply to our profession
● Get grassroots folks involved
● Raise previously marginalized, unheard, less
visible voices
● ITERATE
How we’re bringing it together
Challenges
● Coordinating among busy professionals
● Creating content / site design
● Developing a model for community editors to
create and curate content
● Recruiting community editors
● Sustaining momentum
Future Directions
● Establish an editorial voice
o Committee as core editors
o Community editors keep it fresh
● Explore tools for managing responsibilities
and information channels
● Provide a platform for community
engagement in metadata theory & practice
