9. Henry F. Cauthen Sr.
1901-1977
Henry F. Cauthen was a journalist at three major South Carolina newspapers
during his 44 year career, and one of his many contributions to his community
was originating the name of the Midlands as a regional identifier.
Cauthen created the idea of the Midlands as the name for South Carolina’s central
counties while he was editor of The State newspaper and promoted the concept during
speeches in Aiken, Lancaster, Sumter, Orangeburg, Camden and Winnsboro. The
name Midlands caught on, including use by the U. S. Weather Bureau and in Delta
Airlines advertisements in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Washington
Post. The phrase was used to recruit industry and for regional improvements such as
an expanded airport.
The grandson, son and nephew of Methodist ministers, Cauthen was born
January 1, 1901, in Cheraw, but lived in Timmonsville, Kingstree, North Augusta,
York, Walterboro, Georgetown, Darlington and Charleston while he was growing
up. His father, who had been a newspaperman before his ordained ministry,
encouraged him to become a journalist, and he started work at The News and
Courier in Charleston at age 20, becoming telegraph news editor, state news editor
and sports editor.
Cauthen left The News and Courier in December 1935 to start a new
Charleston newspaper along with his brother, John Cauthen, and brother-in-
law, Frank Gilbreath, but The Star, which was a 24-page news-feature tabloid
published on Sundays, failed quickly.
Cauthen resumed daily newspaper reporting and editing at The Columbia
Record in October 1936, becoming city editor and then managing editor for
15 years. As managing editor of The Record, Cauthen promoted interest in the
Interstate highway system with a series of articles that raised awareness of the
necessity for immediate preparation in the Palmetto State. The South Carolina
Highway Department used his research to achieve enabling legislation for the
state to join the Interstate system.
Cauthen planned and edited a D-Day special edition of The Columbia Record
a month before the event was known with a headline that said “Allies open
invasion: strike across channel.” Cauthen had put his evening paper to bed in
June of 1944 when the Normandy invasion began near midnight Columbia time.
The next day’s State had gone to press before the breaking news arrived, but the
next morning Cauthen had an “extra” edition of the evening paper on the streets
of Columbia.
Cauthen succeeded George A. “Buck” Buchanan as editor of The State in 1961.
When Columbia Mayor Lester L. Bates called leading citizens together to discuss
the racial situation in 1962, Cauthen was one of 28 selected for a secret committee
to work for desegregation.
The same year, William D. Workman of The News and Courier, who had been
defeated in the U. S. Senate race by Ernest “Fritz” Hollings, joined The State as an
associate editor in 1962 and succeeded Cauthen as editor four years later. From
1966, Cauthen wrote comprehensive articles on South Carolina agriculture.
Cauthen’s commitment to the cultural and civic affairs of his community was
integral both to his work and his interests. He held numerous appointments,
engaged in extensive committee service and accompanied Columbia Mayor Lester
Bates to West Berlin to represent the economic interests of the city. Although he
could not read music and never sang in public, he loved singing operatic arias at
home in a strong tenor voice that was so loud the neighbors complained.
Cauthen died on October 23, 1977.
In a rare, signed publisher’s editorial in The State on October 25, 1977, his
friend and colleague Ambrose Hampton wrote, “His career as a newspaperman...
was unique. Without formal training in journalism – indeed he never had the
opportunity of attending college – he rose from reporter to sports editor to
managing editor and ultimately to editor. Although his newspaper work began in
Charleston, most of it took place in Columbia... Mr. Cauthen’s achievements in
journalism were due to a natural command of the English language, a searching
mind, and a true genius for dealing with people... But he will be remembered most
for a strength of character combined with a sense of humanity which made him
both a gentleman and a gentle man.”
Cauthen married Sarah Elizabeth Norris from Calhoun Falls in 1939, and
they had two children: Henry F. Cauthen Jr. and Sarah Cauthen Stepp; four
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

“As a superb craftsman, he asked of himself and others an unerring accuracy in the journalism of fact. As a
Renaissance thinker, he pursued truth and wisdom with meticulous diligence in the journalism of opinion.”
