The document discusses alternative delivery systems (ADS) for education. It provides examples of using distance learning/online education as an ADS, noting both advantages like flexibility and lower costs, and disadvantages such as lack of social interaction and difficulty for some learners and employers. Students are asked to simulate using an ADS and present on advantages, disadvantages, and effectiveness. One group plans an online religious education program using distance learning as the ADS to accommodate various students.

This activity aims for the students to be aware on how the different Alternative
Delivery System are used in education.
This activity will be done by pair. Search for videos that show the use of any
alternative Delivery System. Write a short review regarding the video of ADS. Present the
video and your review on ADS to the class. Write your video review below.

Distance Learning Advantages:
Lots of Flexibility. With distance learning courses, students can complete their course
work from just about anywhere, provide there’s a computer and internet connection. This
allows students to work when and where it is more convenient for them without having to
squeeze in schedule classes to an already busy life.
No commuting. Taking a course online can be one way to cut down on costly gas public
transportation. Since students can often work from home to complete their class
assignments, both time and money are saved in cutting out the trips to and from class.
Numerous choice of schools. Even if you live in a community with few or no colleges
distance learning allows you to choose from a wide variety of schools to complete your
education. You may find online schools that specialize in your particular field or one that
can provide a great general education. Either way, your options for education will be
greatly expanded.
Lowered costs. Prices for online courses are generally cheaper than their on-campus
counterparts and you won’t have to worry about commuting, moving or getting meal plans
on campus, some additional benefits to learning from home.
Learn while working. As distance learning can usually be completed on your own
schedule, it is much easier to complete distance learning courses while working than more
2. traditional educational programs. Keeping your job gives you more income, experience
and stability while completing your degree giving you less to worry about and more time
to focus on your studies.
Distance Learning Disadvantages:
Lack of social interaction. If the classroom environment is what you love most about
learning you may want to take a step back and reconsider distance learning. You’ll likely
get some interaction on chat rooms, discussion boards and through email, but the
experience will be quite different than traditional courses.
Format isn’tideal for all learners. Not everyone is an ideal candidate for online learning.
If you know you have problems with motivation, procrastination and needs lots of
individual attention from an instructor you may want to think long and hard before
enrolling in an online learning program.
Some employers don’t accept online degrees. While a majority of employers will, there
are some who still see a stigma attached to distance learning. Realize that your online
degree may not be the ideal tool for some job fields or for future learning.
Requires adaptability to new technologies. If you’ve never been one to love working
with technology you will probably get a lot less out of an online course than your more
tech-savvy counterparts. Make sure you feelcomfortable working with computers and with
online programs before you sign up for a class.
Not all courses required to complete the degree may be offered online. It makes sense
that more practical majors like nursing aren’t offered entirely inline, after all, part of the
degree is learning to work directly with patients. Find out all the requirements of your
degree to see what may be completed offline.

Experiencing ADS
This activity allows the students to experience using any Alternative Delivery
System.
This activity will be done by group (5 members in each group). The students
will stimulate learning with the use of any alternative delivery system. Based on their
extended readings on ADS, students will show the advantages, disadvantages, and
effectiveness of using ADS.
Write below the synopsis of the simulation you plan to present in class.
Learning is often considered to be a normal part of working and personal life.
Both learning for achieving a job as well as for achieving knowledge should not be
neglected. Online environment is changing continuously and it represents a great
opportunity for learning. It is very important to discover how to learn using all
available communication channels and choosing the ones that best suit a person’s style
of filtering the information.
4. Alternative education gives hope and saves lives by giving students another chance. It
is one of the greatest joys in life. It gives teachers a chance to recover their passion for
one of the most difficult and most important jobs in the world…teaching. It gives
teachers an opportunity to do “whatever it takes” to interact with young people in an
experience like no other, while providing options for students who thought they had no
options. These teachers seek out ways to make learning new and exciting, often
thinking “out of the box.” The responses of their students may be what cause them to
continue their work in alternative education. Those outside of the program sometimes
note that these individuals were innovative, creative teachers in previous teaching
assignments, but seem to be a little “crazier” now. The teachers often respond, “What
can I say? I am an alternative education teacher.” Each new year is a journey not a
destination, a renewed opportunity to touch the future by engaging young minds. I
think it is what causes us to return to the classroom each year.
Students see the advantages of alternative education as a place that is student centered,
safe, accepting of everyone, and a place where students feel that they belong. It is
never a less than education, but rather an approach that is different. It is a place that
provides respect, relationships, and relevance to the real world and a place where
students can become re-engaged. Students report that the connections that are made by
alternative educators are not so much in their methods, but in their hearts. It is a place
where students are invited and they can thrive, because it is a place where the
environment is changed and not a place where we try to change students to fit our mold.
Alternative education is a model that believes all students can succeed, and a model
that is leading educational reform. Alternative education is powerful and is positively
affecting our nation’s dropout crisis.
