  1. 1. EXPERIENCE Internship, graphic design/customer service JFM Advertising (Design/Marketing agency) 2012 Responsible for liaising with clients & suppliers as well as under- taking a variety of administration & creative functions. The core role was graphic design based. In house briefs involved illustra- tion, typography, artwork design/layout and client relationship/ management skills. The internship with JFM developed compe- tence in new systems & technologies promptly, to further apply in daily work. Freelance, graphic design ‘LYFE’ (Youth festival event) 2013 A call out for local designers was raised to submit their ideas for a fresh rebrand of a youth festival in Christchurch, New Zealand. My concept and logo design was chosen by majority vote allowing me to create a mass of advertising/media promotion. Such promotion involved A2 poster design, website design, facebook page graphics, event signage, tee-shirt artwork, and stencil artwork. This work was pro-bono, which as a designer makes a proud portfolio piece. Freelance, graphic design Blue Earth (NZ skin care products) 2013 I have been working with the Blue Earth, New Zealand, on a casual freelance basis. Tutoring lessons were given by myself for using the adobe suite, improving the owners own methods for product label design. Following this, Blue Earth contracted me to update their website graphics; giving them a fresh, clean and professional brand appeal. This resulted in proven sales success. Contract/commercial, graphic design Motivationz (Sports coaching) 2011/12/13 “Motivationz” is a small business that runs training, coaching and education programs — both through schools and privately. Since 2011 I have been creating a diverse range of materials for them. Examples include: corporate documents, booklets, posters, flyers, cards, certificates for a younger audience and everything in-between. I have been exposed to the demands of time management, commercial work and client interaction. This is an authentic professional experience that has been essential to my growth as a designer. EDUCATION 2013 BDVA (Graphic Design & animation) Level 7, (Currently studying) Cross crediting into the final year following my previous qualification, this Bachelor programme educated myself in design/ visual communication using text and images. This involved scripting and constructing animated stories using motion design, exploring 2D and 3D narratives. Drawing, inventing and manipulating imagery and typography through illustration, photography, printmaking, painting, and animation. We were given the openness to discover our own design projects and undertake a live project working with a local design agency. 2011/12 Digital Media Advanced Dip. Level 6/7 ‘DMA’ was a creative studio environment. With room to extend my existing technical skills, I learnt how to further develop ideas and produce high end digital design work; broadening my skills as a visual communica- tor. This course armed me with the skills and confidence to manage my time effectively, work with real clients, produce industry standard work and gain valuable experience in the professional industry itself. 2010/11 Graphic Design Dip. Level 6 This Diploma programme introduced a focused learning in graphic design, giving me a beneficial creative skill-set. I began to develop my own design style and build my passion for design into a great new career pathway. The course involved multiple briefs that were to be delivered at a Pre- press standard. 2. 2. EXPERIENCE (CONT.) Freelance, graphic design Mantis (NZ hard rock band) 2012/13 I have been working with the Christchurch, New Zealand, band “Mantis”. The opportunity required design and production of many gig and tour posters. It is also within my brief to create all of the band’s merchandise and social networking identities. The commission of design and illustration is a long term freelance employment contract. Freelance, graphic design Spiderhands (Record label) 2012 Created a professional identity for this music tuition and recording company in Christchurch, New Zealand. This commission was for a logo and symbol with accompanying business cards and Facebook page identity. A following opportunity was to create promotional posters to be put up around relevant universities. My designs were created as a small business promotional package and to generate brand awareness. Commercial, graphic design Light Up Christchurch (Charity music gig) 2012 For this brief I worked with a not-for-profit organisation on promotional material for the Light Up Christchurch Charity Gig. The aim was to exceed the previous benchmark through innovative design and promotion of the event. I developed and produced the logo and branding identity for this event; taking on a new approach through three dimensional tactile illustration. Freelance, graphic design Trade Aid (Fair trade organisation) 2012 Designed packaging and promotional material for a new high end chocolate bar that Trade Aid was establishing. This was not used commercially but it was a great opportunity to create this concept and learn more about Trade Aid’s practices. The aim was to endorse an organic and pure product. A dominant part of the branding was my hand drawn typographic illustration; directly influenced by the patterns and objects of the cultures that produced the cocoa beans. Level 3 ‘iCreate’ for me, was a direct entry into tertiary study at an early age, fast-tracking my career pathway. The course gave me the skills that I needed to move on to diploma level study. The focus was on digital illustration techniques, how to create images and pages suitable for web publication, how to capture and edit video, and how to create and animate 2D and 3D objects. 2009 NCEA Level 1, NZQA
  3. 3. EXPERIENCE (CONT.) Competition, graphic design D&AD (Design and Art Direction) 2012 My co-graduate team had taken on a D&AD competition brief set out by global design agency Pentagram. We were to invent a supplement series for The Typographic Circle that would be distributed with a larger magazine. The supplement’s purpose was to showcase high profile designers that had given talks for the The Typographic Circle. This was a challenging and demanding project involving strategic and creative thinking; in which we had regular consultation from the Creative Director of Christchurch, New Zealand’s, ‘Hairy Lemon’ agency. Freelance, illustration Dianne McTigue (Netball NZ) 2011 Illustrated a series of T-Shirt designs for Dianne’s Netball team, Mt Hutt New Zealand. These illustrations were for the benefit of the netball teams’ fundraising efforts, and were a fresh way to communicate sport related messages to the young female audience. I fashioned the T-Shirts’ with vibrant and contemporary illustrations to appeal to the target audience. Freelance, graphic design Mactier Photography (Photographer) 2011 Created an identity campaign for a freelance student photographer at CPIT, Christchurch. Firstly, we worked together to build his identity — the brand name, persona and logo. Following this was the creation of all associated material (Catalogue, advertisement, portfolio package, House style). Freelance, design/illustration The Scott family (Private appointment) 2011 Illustrated, designed and hand crafted a sizeable quantity of invitations for a celebratory event. The invitations were required to have a natural, organic feel. The illustration was developed from a personal study on Indian Mehndi tattoo design — a cultural inspiration. Commercial, graphic design Wayne Goldsmith (Sports speaker) 2011 Designed a flyer/poster for Wayne Goldsmith’s seminar in sport and business. This was a one off job commissioned through ‘Motivationz’ as they hired Goldsmith to hold this seminar. Freelance, graphic design Ellens Cupcakes (Small business) 2011 Created a small business identity for Tactix netballer, Ellen Halpenny. I developed a logo for her small cupcake start up business. This brief included the creation of promotional materials such as packaging, brochures and flyers. Student project, graphic design Human Conflict (Exhibition catalogue) 2012 After researching various movements in art history, I curated various art pieces relevant to my desired theme. It was a requirement to write a critique and biography of one of the artists and their painting involved in the theme. From there I put together eight art pieces based around the idea of ‘human conflict’. These pieces were showcased in an original exhibition catalogue supported by a rationale for their inclusion. This curation of an exhibition would guide the viewer, telling them a story as they make their way around the gallery with the booklet in hand. Student project, graphic design DINZ (Designers Institution) 2011 My goal was to produce promotional pieces for a DINZ (Design institute of New Zealand) seminar covering the topic of “International Typographic Style” movement. The work was to reflect a thoughtful analysis and original visual application of my chosen movement’s style. After researching the movement and writing a critique and biography of ‘Rudolph Deharak’ and his design piece from that movement, I created a promotional campaign that put all of my research and development in context. Examples include: Poster series, street sticker series, seminar flyer, seminar booklet and event website.
