History of VHS
Year

Virtual High School

2000 - 2002

Started as an opportunity to share courses using online classes, housed at Chaparral
HS. “Cyber Schoolhouse” adopted as a Distance Education Program. Began
including PBS video courses, added driver education.

2002 - 2004

Opened as Virtual HS on campus of Advanced Technologies Academy as a full-time,
diploma granting high school. Course enrollments: 3,395.

2004 - 2006

First graduating class of seven students in 2005. Course enrollments: 4,933

2006 - 2008

Removed requirements for live Centra sessions in courses. Course enrollments:
3,798
Ended use of video courses, moving to e-textbooks for online courses. Moved into
shared Virtual HS / Vegas PBS campus. Course enrollments: 6,383.

2008 - 2010

2010 - 2012

2012 - 2014

Began development of District-level courses aligned to CCSS in collaboration with
CPD. Course enrollments: 15,924.
Migrated to Canvas LMS fall 2013. Began piloting District-level courses in
comprehensive high schools for blended/online instruction.
History of AIS
Year

Academy for Individualized Study HS

2000 - 2002 Started as an opportunity to serve students in grades 3-12 as part of Education Services

Division as an independent Study and Credit-By-Exam program. Located at East St.
Louis location. Served approximately 100 full-time students.
2002 - 2004 Shifted to grades 7-12 with five testing sites across the valley, mailing packets to

schools. Served approximate 300 full-time students.
2004 - 2006 Shifted to serve grades 9-12 and moved course curriculum packets on server for digital

teacher access.
2006 - 2008 Developed updated curriculum packets aligned to District adopted textbooks. Office
moved to Western HS.
2008 - 2010 Office moved to Bishop Gorman HS campus. Shifted to serve students in grades 10-12
with ten testing sites across the valley. Increasing enrollment with significant increase
in concurrent enrollments.
2010 - 2012 Office moved to shared Virtual HS / Vegas PBS campus. Began using online content,
shared with comprehensive high schools. Teachers split time to increase to 20 testing
sites across the valley. Served approximately 1,000 full-time students.
2012 - 2014

School began exclusively using online content fall 2013. Shifted to serve students in
grades 9-12 with ten testing sites across the valley. Served approximately 2,600 fulltime students (2013).

Migrated to Canvas LMS fall 2013. Began piloting District-level courses in comprehensive high schools for blended/online instruction.

History of AIS Year Academy for Individualized Study HS 2000 - 2002 Started as an opportunity to serve students in grades 3-12 as part of Education Services Division as an independent Study and Credit-By-Exam program. Located at East St. Louis location. Served approximately 100 full-time students. 2002 - 2004 Shifted to grades 7-12 with five testing sites across the valley, mailing packets to schools. Served approximate 300 full-time students. 2004 - 2006 Shifted to serve grades 9-12 and moved course curriculum packets on server for digital teacher access. 2006 - 2008 Developed updated curriculum packets aligned to District adopted textbooks. Office moved to Western HS. 2008 - 2010 Office moved to Bishop Gorman HS campus. Shifted to serve students in grades 10-12 with ten testing sites across the valley. Increasing enrollment with significant increase in concurrent enrollments. 2010 - 2012 Office moved to shared Virtual HS / Vegas PBS campus. Began using online content, shared with comprehensive high schools. Teachers split time to increase to 20 testing sites across the valley. Served approximately 1,000 full-time students. 2012 - 2014 School began exclusively using online content fall 2013. Shifted to serve students in grades 9-12 with ten testing sites across the valley. Served approximately 2,600 fulltime students (2013).
