Scientific notation is used to write very large or very small numbers in a standardized way. It involves writing a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10. This allows mathematicians to easily work with numbers that would otherwise be long to write out. Some examples of converting between scientific notation and standard form are given.
