Nutrition tips for hormonal balance in breastfeeding moms
1. Nutrition for moms with hormonal inbalance
We live in a chemically-induced grocery store world. Never before in history have we had so many food
choices at our disposal. Chemically addictive food I must add. But we were not taught how to pick the
right foods by our parents- because they didn’t live in a time when there was such an overabundance!
It’s our responsibility to learn how to pick food wisely and eat a daily balanced diet. And teach our
children how to do it too.
Women are hormonally out of balance largely because of the chemicals in our food not being registered
nordigested properly in our bodies, therefore our hormones don’t know where to tell these foods to go!
Fat storage happens. This can be chronic.
2. How can we reset our bodies so we feel more energetic? Can we rewire our bodies to process food
faster for optimal weight loss and to make us more satisfied?
Mainly this has to do with hormones. And for moms who are breastfeeding with hormones pulsing
through their bodies to feed their babies, the following info will really help you reach hormone balance
as much as possible at this stage in life.
This is the journey of learning how food works with our hormones. Since I have done the research for
you, here are some vital basics.
1. Most importantly: eat every 2.5 to 3 hours. Do not space meals out for longer periods than this.
Hormones are regulated best when eating this frequently and regularly. Let your bodytrust that
you are going to give it consistent food every 3 or so hours andyour hormones will work WITH
you, not against you (hormone lesson: yourleptin hormone will then tell your body it’s full and
give you a break from cravings). My next blog will contain the right kinds of food to eat at each
meal so your leptin hormone kicks in to prevent cravings.
2. Again, do not starve yourself, especially if you are working out. Would you drive a car on a long
trip and then not refuel it to keep going when it hits empty? Human bodies are the same way.
You cannot work your body to death and then starve it. Your body will store any food you eat
thinking that it needs to prepare for meager times. Don’t do this to your body. Give it some love.
3. 80% good and 20% or less bad. What does this mean? Sometimes when coaches like me talk
about how it is not good to starve your body and eating is good, people use this as an excuse to
eat junk food to get their calories in. Wrong! Let’s use the car example again. You put the right
fuel in your car’s gas tank because it’s the proper “nutrition” to get it from point A to point B.
Would you put dirt in the gas tank? No! Our bodies need healthy food to have it run the right
way. But hear me out: What’s the point of living if you can’t have treats once in a while?! That’s
where the 80/20 rule kicks in. I learned this from a good friend of mine who is in amazing shape.
Keep track of your food (ahem, write it down in other words) and eat healthy 80% of the time. If
you want a treat, indulge in one medium portion or smaller (do not use this as a way to binge),
but out of your week, 20% or less should be junk. If you don’t ever have a treat, then you
probably won’t stick with a healthy eating lifestyle.
These are my few tips of the day. As manymoms experience hormonal problems and weight
gain post-pregnancy your hormones need regulation more than ever since you are trying to raise a
human life, your precious baby. I believe this is when you should feel your best, when the other parts of
your life are so hectic. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions I can answer for you or if
