20. Significance
• Novel method to test STM, WM, LTM
performance due to the effects of dose
dependent caffeine treatments
• Specific caffeine dosage for enhancement
in memory tasks in different caffeine
consumers

Introduce name, title
Caffeine background
STM
WM – operates over a few seconds; temporary storage (IIIer to STM) but it also manipulates information and processes it (executive WM)
(it depends on attentional control & mental effort that STM)
Research gap; objective/ hypothesis
effect on caffeine without the constraints of cognitive decline due to ageing or degenerative diseases
Effect of continuous administration of caffeine
Dose-dependent effects of caffeine on STM, WM, LTM
Measure the tolerance level of caffeine
Studying low consumers, who haven’t been subjected would help analyze the right dosage of caffeine needed for memory enhancement
If caffeine affects STM/working memory/ long term memory during the treatment and the after effects of the treatment
- Working memory tests used to measure short-term memory when both are distinct aspects of memory (serial recall– STM; delayed recall – working memory (info needs to undergo manipulations/ interference task before recall then process involves working memory; )
ED – population: - novel population ideal to check the direct effects of caffeine on memory capacity that is intact and is not compromised by the presence of memory impairment due to ageing and neurodegenerative diseases
- Doing a questionnaire to select individuals
Daily caffeine levels (coffee, tea, CCFS)– (grouped into three based on questionnaire results)
Confounding factors – age, gender, program year (aiming to look at 2nd year and up to account for dropout rates) and other factors
- Double –blind procedure
Treatment
ED – time period
– time when testing is done – before, during, after the treatment
Effect of caffeine on memory – we going to be doing 5 memory tests each targeting different aspects of memory
Maximum number of words recalled
STM – simple span tests, serial recall, forward digit span
WM – delayed recall; complex span, backward digit span (executive and verbal WM)
Longest list of words repeated in correct order –simple
Longest list of words repeated in correct order (multiple trials) – there’s a interference/ additional task – complex
Similar to memory span but with digits (numbers higher than 2 digits) – recall in correct order – forward – STM; backward – LTM
BFSR test -10 unrelated words- read to participants – 1 word/sec. Immediate recall of entire list. (Measures of long- and short-term memory and of total recall are obtained. Higher scores on the short-term memory test indicate poorer performance)
- Tackles verbal memory and learning (STM) and retrieval – (LTM)
Measures speed of retrieval of information from general knowledge. Participants were shown a sentence and they had to decide whether it was true (e.g. canaries have wings) or false (e.g. dogs have wings). This task lasted 3 min
Significance of doing multiple memory tests on differently caffeinated individuals can help build a novel model for effect of any psychostimulant drug on memory
Underlying purpose is to provide the correct dosage of caffeine that elevates memory performance in low- high consumers
