2. Early Years
• Born on November 1, 1871 in New Jersey
• His parents were Mary Peek and Jonathon
Crane (who was a methodist minister). They
had 14 kids. Crane was the youngest
• His father died and then he and his family
moved into a new house, so they made the
old house a museum.
3. School
• He went to Claverack College for less than two
years, then he went to LaFayette College in
Easton, Pennsylvania, and then Syracuse
University.
• Crane didn’t stay at any college long, he was
always dropping out.
• Finally, he moved to New York and began
writing short stories
4. His First Attempt
• His first novel was “Maggie: A Girl of the
Streets”
• It was about a little girl being abused, put into
prostution, and she eventually commited
suicide.
• He couldn’t get any of the publishers to
approve them, so he published it himself.
• Unfortunatly, the story was not successful, but
Crane didn’t give up that easy.

• Stephen Crane was one of america’s foremost
realistic writers, and his works have been
recognized with the beginning of modern
american naturalism.
