• Organisms are slender with a wavy membrane, F1.medium.gif
protruding flagellum, and visible nucleus
• Causes disease “African Sleeping Sickness”
• TransmiEed to humans through the Tsetse Fly (only found in
Africa) and infects the blood ~ 70,000 cases per year, larger
epidemics occur
• Symptoms include fever, enlarged spleen, swollen lymph
nodes, joint pains, and more serious problems such as sleep
disorders, coma, and death
• Treatment includes Suramin and Melarsoprol
2. Rubella Virus

• Symptoms include slight fever (102 degrees F), inflamed, red
eyes, rash that spreads over the body, headachesThere is no
treatment for Rubella Virus
• Rubella Virus must run its course throughout the body
• Most children are given the vaccine (MMR‐ measles‐mumps‐
rubella) in two doses within their childhood years
– Fewer than 300 cases per year, periodic outbreaks
