PROVINCIAL’S MUSINGS
Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought. The New Year has dawned with the untimely
death of Fr Joy Fernandes. I do not know whether his parents knew his character or Joy himself made happiness
his mission. The name suited him the best. He became a source of consolation and comfort to many. He cared
less for his conveniences and wellbeing including health but cared more for the happiness of others. He
entertained people, helped people and lifted the spirit of many. Joy beckons us to be messengers of great joy.
No new year is not just the change of a page in the calendar. It is the change of attitudes and perspectives,
desires and decisions. Hence the question for us to ponder is ‘How to make this year 2015 new?’ I suggest
that we ponder over compassion to make Year 2015 new.
Compassion means having kind feelings towards others including animals and unselfish acts to help them. It
is a moral behavior. Empathy does not really describe moral behavior but simply the ability to understand
what someone else is feeling and to fully concentrate on it; it is not compassion, in the moral sense. Altruism
is the act of unselfishly giving help, when needed, with no strings attached, with no thought of reward.
Compassion is a choice and that is why we had the Savior. Jesus preached compassion in his words and
deeds. However, he preached the best when he said from the cross: “Father, forgive them they know not what
they are doing”.
Cor maternum, a title given to Ignatius by his first companions summarizes his life for us. He was deeply
human. Hence he could make his companions great messengers of joy. Shall we practice and preach this
basic attitude in and through our words and deeds? I think it will be a great tribute to Joy.

and Staff members and launched our College
official Website www.sjpuec.org and Facebook
page of Joseph’s PU Evening Bangalore.
The all awaited Annual Sports Day of SJCC was
held in the mid of December. Fiasta, the Christmas
Programme with the neighbourhood children was
held in the college as the part of Christmas
KNL January 2015
Celebration. To mark this day, we had invited the
Children from ‘Sneha Care Home’ (home for the
AIDS patients) who spent a day in the campus
and our students had a transforming experiencing
with these children. Various associations like
AICUF, CSA conducted outreach programme in
and around the city and shared the Christmas joy
with the unprivileged ones. As a part of Christmas
celebration in the college, catholic students and
staff had meaningful Eucharistic celebration
followed by Christmas celebration with the
students and the staff.
Mr B.V. Acharya, former Advocate General and
an alumnus of St Aloysius College, Mangalore was
the chief guest for the convocation of the Diploma
in Human Rights Studies at SJEC. On the occasion,
a number of Indians as well as foreign nationals
received their diploma certificates. The college
organized various competitions for Christmas,
such as crib making, star making, card making,
carol singing, Christmas tableau and so on. Sr Sally
Joseph PDDM gave the Christmas message. The
college had the farewell function to two of our
retiring staff, Prof Joy Alex and Prof Ravishankar,
both of whom had served institution for over
three decades.
ST JOSEPH’S, Hassan
As a part of the Christmas celebrations, the school
had a short programme for the students. A
Christmas story was enacted, carols were sung
and Fr Cyril Menezes beautifully brought out the
meaning of Christmas in a student’s life. In the
evening a Christmas get-together for the entire
staff, both teaching and non-teaching.
Fr Christopher Xavier in his message, asked the
staff to see the New Born Jesus in the children,
and His grace in our daily routine. The St Joseph’s
boarding held Christmas Tree programme for the
boarders on the 22nd
evening. Gifts were
distributed. The students of St Joseph’s composite
PU College, won the second prize in the inter-
collegiate carol singing competition held at Christ
School, Hassan.
The community members are grateful to
Fr Dionysius Vas, for helping us to understand
the dynamics and need of having a well-planned
Vision and Mission statement. It was indeed a
great help. The members of the community have
ushered in the New Year with great zeal, having
new plans for the campus and its development, not
forgetting to grow in the Spirit and Charism of our
calling.
ST ALOYSIUS COLLEGE, Harihar
The community plunged into grief hearing the news
of the shocking death of our dear friend Fr Joy
Fernandes. Frs Vincent Pinto and Santhosh
Fernandes immediately rushed to Bangalore for
the funeral Mass and thereafter for the burial at
Mt St Joseph. Fr Vincent Pinto preached for the
midnight Christmas Mass and Fr Santhosh
Fernandes for the New Year Mass at the Shrine of
Our Lady of Health, Harihar. To build up a close bond
with the priests and religious we visited every
community of Davangere zone, gave a cake and
wished them for Christmas. The Christmas
celebration for all faiths in front of a crib in the
hostel was truly meaningful. Bishop Francis
Serrao visited the community for Christmas and
wished all the members.
The whole community was present for the first
thanksgiving Mass of Fr Robert Rodrigues at
Thirthahalli. Fr Ivan Mendonca, PCF came in
search of his lone sheep and met Sch. Anush
D’Cunha. Stone benches are built under the trees
in the play ground for the students to sit and eat
their meals.
15 December was observed as Human Rights day
in our college. People Education Society conducted
district level quiz competition, in which our students
bagged first prize.
PARIS
We had the Xmas celebrations in the South Asian
Assistancy which was well organized by Sch. John
Michael of Madurai province. We were very well
involved in the Christmas and New Year
celebrations of the community. This year we had
the Xmas evening wherein we got to know how
the Xmas is being celebrated in other continents.
We also had during this month two visits that of
the mother of Sch. Vivian Richard and that of Sch
Dilan of Sri Lankan province (he did his BSc studies
in Mangalore, living in Asha Kiran, right now doing
his theological studies in Rome). It was a wonderful
09/12
KNL January 2015
experience to have them along with us. For the New
Year celebrations in our Jesuit church, the
Karnatakans cooked for the refugees. The mother
of Sch. Richard was the main cook. During the Xmas
vacation, two of our brothers Sch. Paul Anand and
Jaison D’Souza did their annual retreat in Belgium.
After a long battle with the language this retreat has
refreshed their spirits. It was very shocking to hear
the sad demise of Fr Joy Fernandes. Be assured of
our prayers and keep us in your prayers.

OBITUARY:
FR JOY MT FERNANDES SJ
(Born: 20.12.1966; Entered: 29.06.1984;
Ordained: 27.12.1999; Died: 31.12.14)
The last day of the year,
31 December 2014 turned out to be the last
day for Joy too on this earth. At around 12.15
pm he was found on the floor of the
bathroom and was immediately rushed to
Mallya hospital where he was put on
ventilator in the CCU. Though he revived for
a few minutes, another heart attack – a
massive one, took Joy away from us. It was
about 3.00 pm. Joy had been ailing from
diabetes, blood pressure and cardiac
deficiency for several years. Already at the
age of 40 he had suffered a stroke from
which he recovered, but it left its mark on
him. He had undergone angioplasty twice
and a heart bypass surgery the third time,
the first one when he was in Boston, USA,
for an educational seminar. After the latest
surgical intervention, though it was
successful,thedoctorshadwarnedhimthat
his heart was functioning at just 40% of its
capacity. But this did not daunt Joy nor
dampen his spirits. He lived an ever active,
lively and vibrant life, not worrying too
much about his diet or medication. In fact
just before his birthday he had gone for the
annual staff picnic and as usual he was the
soul of the party. The very next day in the
wee hours he had to be hospitalized for
shortness of breath and hence on 20
December 2014, his birthday, he was in the
hospital. He was just 48! He returned from
the hospital for the Christmas celebrations
in the community and even joined in the
fun and frolic, songs and dance, greeting
and gift giving. He was meticulous in
measuring his blood sugar and keeping a
record, which shows that at 9.45 am on 31
December it was 400! By the time he was
rushed to the hospital it had risen to 600!
Nothingthatthedoctorsdidcouldkeephim

Joy was born on 20 December 1966 in
Mangalore to Alphonse and Angeline
Fernandes. He was the youngest in his
family. After his studies at St Aloysius
College, Mangalore, he joined the Society of
Jesus on 29 June 1984. He was ordained a
priest on 27 December 1999. Joy was fond
of Kannada and naturally he did his
10/12
KNL January 2015
Kannada Major from Karnataka College,
Dharwad and B Ed in R V teachers College,
Bangalore and then joyfully prepared
himself to be a great teacher. He was indeed
a great teacher. He taught at St Joseph’s
Indian High School from 1999 to 2000.
Because of his abilities for creative
seminars for the youth, he was specially
appointed as Asst Director of Ashirvad.
From 2001 to 2006 Joy was teaching at St
Joseph’s School, Hassan. From 2006 till his
death he served at St Joseph’s Indian High
School as an Asst Headmaster, Director of
St Louis Boarding House, Minister of SJIHS
Jesuit Community and finally as
Headmaster of St Joseph’s Indian Middle
School.
He was a good Jesuit. His was a life of
commitment. Obedience, which sometimes
becomes a challenge in religious life for
some, was a joyful act for Joy. He accepted
alltransfersgracefullyandcheerfully.Every
community accepted him and felt Joy
would enrich it. He had a special skill of
relating to people, and turning even
enemies into friends. I still remember the
days when Joy was the Minister of SJIHS
community. We lived and worked together.
Be it the Eucharistic or birthday
celebrations, be it a feast day function or a
victory celebration, Joy would make it lively,
unique and memorable. He truly fostered
the union of minds and hearts in the
community. He welcomed every guest, be
it a senior Jesuit or a novice, a superior or
a subject, a religious or a lay person, a
celebrity or a pauper, with such warmth
that everyone felt at home. His hospitality
was truly motherly. Faithfulness to the Lord
and availability to his Mission were the
hallmarks of Joy’s religious commitment.
He was always available for any ministry at
any place to any person at any time. He was
a well known preacher. No wonder, many
parish priests sought him for Masses on
Sundays and Feast days. His sermons are
remembered even after years, for their
powerful message.
Joywasagreatteacher.Atrulygreatteacher
is one who inspires and transforms others.
Joy proved this right in his teaching
ministry. He taught Kannada. No one failed
in his subject. Teaching a language to college
students and still have 100% attention and
100% results is a remarkable achievement.
When Joy taught, his whole body spoke. His
communication skills endeared himself to
many friends, many followers and
admirers among the staff, PTA and student
community. His communication skills,
which can put a professional MC to shame,
made Joy a sought after MC at all Jesuit
functions, be it the First Mass, or a Jubilee
or a province celebration or an official
function, Joy was there bubbling with joy
and making others bubble with joy. My dear
Joy, You have left an emptiness, difficult to
fill.
Joy loved the poor deeply. Fr Stany D’Souza,
our Provincial and I still remember our
4months’stay withJoyatDhanunagarslum
in 1989, in Dharwad, during our final year
degree. By his simplicity he endeared
himself so much to all the slum people that
they lovingly called him Jayanna. They loved
him and said, “Jayanna Neevu Nammavaru”.
That means “Brother Joy, you are our very
own”. Joy’s love for the poor flowered most
as the Director of St Louis Boarding House.
Empowering the poor was his main goal.
He had great dreams for the poor boarders
whocamefromverypoorfamiliesindistant

parishes. He laughed like a child, spoke like a
child. He ate with them, played with them,
prayed with them and of course,
accompanied them gently, compassionately,
faithfully and firmly. He made them speak in
English and provided for them all the
opportunities to blossom. Be it a school
cultural fest or an inter school sports meet,
you would surely find his boarders winning
prizes. The parents of the boarders were
happy to meet Joy and discuss their sons’
progress. Joy visited their homes. It was his
personal touch that made a difference in the
lives of the boarders.
Joy was much sought after by everyone for
youth camps and that all through his years
of formation he would spend his summer
days conducting leadership and vocation
camps, attracting many a young people to the
Society of Jesus or religious life. He could
write skits, act, speak, debate, sing, play the
Tabla, play a fantastic host, plan and organize
programme. He was team builder. He
inspired his staff members at SJIMS,
appreciated them, celebrated with them,
laughed with them, treated them as partners
in the mission, and gave them a sense of
belonging to the School. They loved to work
with him. Joy planned everyday’s events
meticulously.
Above all Joy was very HUMAN. He shared
his joys and pains, his ups and downs, his
consolations and desolations, his dreams and
aspirations with his intimate friends. I was
fortunate to be one. He was full of
compassion. He grieved with those who
grieved, suffered with those in pain or loss.
He was there, not with many words but with
silent strength and support. Sometime ago
the two of us took time off and sat and talked
and talked. At the end Joy exclaimed, “Salu, I
feel so free today”. Today I feel a great
sorrow within me as I have to say Good bye
to Joy.
Joy has now left us. He had a grand funeral
with a large crowd of mourners both at the
mass in the Indian Institutions’ Auditorium
and at his burial in the Jesuit Cemetery at
Mount St Joseph. At the end of it all, one
poor woman, weeping exclaimed:
“Devaranthaa Manushyaru”, meaning a
“God-like person”. She must have been one
of the many poor persons who had
experienced Joy’s quiet generosity and
genuine humanity. We feel the loss of Joy.
We miss him. But just a brief moment of
silence would make him come alive with his
characteristic smile and bubbling
enthusiasm. Joy is now beckoning us to be
messengers of great tidings of joy. He is
calling us to be simple, compassionate and
above all HUMAN. Therefore, even as we
pray for him that he may be fully reconciled
with God let us also pray to him that he may
obtain for us the grace of being what he was
– HUMAN, and therefore, “Devaranthaa
Manushyaru”.

KNL January 2015

  • 1. January 2015 Vol 88 No. 01 1/12 PROVINCIAL’S MUSINGS Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought. The New Year has dawned with the untimely death of Fr Joy Fernandes. I do not know whether his parents knew his character or Joy himself made happiness his mission. The name suited him the best. He became a source of consolation and comfort to many. He cared less for his conveniences and wellbeing including health but cared more for the happiness of others. He entertained people, helped people and lifted the spirit of many. Joy beckons us to be messengers of great joy. No new year is not just the change of a page in the calendar. It is the change of attitudes and perspectives, desires and decisions. Hence the question for us to ponder is ‘How to make this year 2015 new?’ I suggest that we ponder over compassion to make Year 2015 new. Compassion means having kind feelings towards others including animals and unselfish acts to help them. It is a moral behavior. Empathy does not really describe moral behavior but simply the ability to understand what someone else is feeling and to fully concentrate on it; it is not compassion, in the moral sense. Altruism is the act of unselfishly giving help, when needed, with no strings attached, with no thought of reward. Compassion is a choice and that is why we had the Savior. Jesus preached compassion in his words and deeds. However, he preached the best when he said from the cross: “Father, forgive them they know not what they are doing”. Cor maternum, a title given to Ignatius by his first companions summarizes his life for us. He was deeply human. Hence he could make his companions great messengers of joy. Shall we practice and preach this basic attitude in and through our words and deeds? I think it will be a great tribute to Joy. APPOINTED BY THE POPE Fr Pietro Bovati (ITA), secretary of the Pontifical Biblical Commission APPOINTED BY FR GENERAL Fr Jean-Baptiste Ganza Gasanana: Regional Superior of Rwanda Burundi. FROM GENERAL CURIA A New Conference. “The Jesuit Conference of Canada and USA”. Father Timothy Kesicki will be the first President. Zimbabwe-Mozambique. The Region of Mozambique, is suppressed and its members, communities and works became part of the Province of Zimbabwe, now called the Province of Zimbabwe- Mozambique (ZIM)ASSIGNED BY THE PROVINCIAL Fr Lawrence Pinto: Mundgod Mission

At around 12.15 pm he was found on the floor of the bathroom and was immediately rushed to Mallya hospital where he was put on ventilator in the CCU. Though he revived for a few minutes, another heart attack – a massive one, took Joy away from us. It was about 3.00 pm. Joy had been ailing from diabetes, blood pressure and cardiac deficiency for several years. Already at the age of 40 he had suffered a stroke from which he recovered, but it left its mark on him. He had undergone angioplasty twice and a heart bypass surgery the third time, the first one when he was in Boston, USA, for an educational seminar. After the latest surgical intervention, though it was successful, thedoctorshadwarnedhimthat his heart was functioning at just 40% of its capacity. But this did not daunt Joy nor dampen his spirits. He lived an ever active, lively and vibrant life, not worrying too much about his diet or medication. In fact just before his birthday he had gone for the annual staff picnic and as usual he was the soul of the party. The very next day in the wee hours he had to be hospitalized for shortness of breath and hence on 20 December 2014, his birthday, he was in the hospital. He was just 48! He returned from the hospital for the Christmas celebrations in the community and even joined in the fun and frolic, songs and dance, greeting and gift giving. He was meticulous in measuring his blood sugar and keeping a record, which shows that at 9.45 am on 31 December it was 400! By the time he was rushed to the hospital it had risen to 600! Nothingthatthedoctorsdidcouldkeephim with us. Joy was born on 20 December 1966 in Mangalore to Alphonse and Angeline Fernandes. He was the youngest in his family. After his studies at St Aloysius College, Mangalore, he joined the Society of Jesus on 29 June 1984. He was ordained a priest on 27 December 1999. Joy was fond of Kannada and naturally he did his 10/12
  • 11. KNL January 2015 Kannada Major from Karnataka College, Dharwad and B Ed in R V teachers College, Bangalore and then joyfully prepared himself to be a great teacher. He was indeed a great teacher. He taught at St Joseph’s Indian High School from 1999 to 2000. Because of his abilities for creative seminars for the youth, he was specially appointed as Asst Director of Ashirvad. From 2001 to 2006 Joy was teaching at St Joseph’s School, Hassan. From 2006 till his death he served at St Joseph’s Indian High School as an Asst Headmaster, Director of St Louis Boarding House, Minister of SJIHS Jesuit Community and finally as Headmaster of St Joseph’s Indian Middle School. He was a good Jesuit. His was a life of commitment. Obedience, which sometimes becomes a challenge in religious life for some, was a joyful act for Joy. He accepted alltransfersgracefullyandcheerfully.Every community accepted him and felt Joy would enrich it. He had a special skill of relating to people, and turning even enemies into friends. I still remember the days when Joy was the Minister of SJIHS community. We lived and worked together. Be it the Eucharistic or birthday celebrations, be it a feast day function or a victory celebration, Joy would make it lively, unique and memorable. He truly fostered the union of minds and hearts in the community. He welcomed every guest, be it a senior Jesuit or a novice, a superior or a subject, a religious or a lay person, a celebrity or a pauper, with such warmth that everyone felt at home. His hospitality was truly motherly. Faithfulness to the Lord and availability to his Mission were the hallmarks of Joy’s religious commitment. He was always available for any ministry at any place to any person at any time. He was a well known preacher. No wonder, many parish priests sought him for Masses on Sundays and Feast days. His sermons are remembered even after years, for their powerful message. Joywasagreatteacher.Atrulygreatteacher is one who inspires and transforms others. Joy proved this right in his teaching ministry. He taught Kannada. No one failed in his subject. Teaching a language to college students and still have 100% attention and 100% results is a remarkable achievement. When Joy taught, his whole body spoke. His communication skills endeared himself to many friends, many followers and admirers among the staff, PTA and student community. His communication skills, which can put a professional MC to shame, made Joy a sought after MC at all Jesuit functions, be it the First Mass, or a Jubilee or a province celebration or an official function, Joy was there bubbling with joy and making others bubble with joy. My dear Joy, You have left an emptiness, difficult to fill. Joy loved the poor deeply. Fr Stany D’Souza, our Provincial and I still remember our 4months’stay withJoyatDhanunagarslum in 1989, in Dharwad, during our final year degree. By his simplicity he endeared himself so much to all the slum people that they lovingly called him Jayanna. They loved him and said, “Jayanna Neevu Nammavaru”. That means “Brother Joy, you are our very own”. Joy’s love for the poor flowered most as the Director of St Louis Boarding House. Empowering the poor was his main goal. He had great dreams for the poor boarders whocamefromverypoorfamiliesindistant 11/12
  • 12. KNL January 2015 parishes. He laughed like a child, spoke like a child. He ate with them, played with them, prayed with them and of course, accompanied them gently, compassionately, faithfully and firmly. He made them speak in English and provided for them all the opportunities to blossom. Be it a school cultural fest or an inter school sports meet, you would surely find his boarders winning prizes. The parents of the boarders were happy to meet Joy and discuss their sons’ progress. Joy visited their homes. It was his personal touch that made a difference in the lives of the boarders. Joy was much sought after by everyone for youth camps and that all through his years of formation he would spend his summer days conducting leadership and vocation camps, attracting many a young people to the Society of Jesus or religious life. He could write skits, act, speak, debate, sing, play the Tabla, play a fantastic host, plan and organize programme. He was team builder. He inspired his staff members at SJIMS, appreciated them, celebrated with them, laughed with them, treated them as partners in the mission, and gave them a sense of belonging to the School. They loved to work with him. Joy planned everyday’s events meticulously. Above all Joy was very HUMAN. He shared his joys and pains, his ups and downs, his consolations and desolations, his dreams and aspirations with his intimate friends. I was fortunate to be one. He was full of compassion. He grieved with those who grieved, suffered with those in pain or loss. He was there, not with many words but with silent strength and support. Sometime ago the two of us took time off and sat and talked and talked. At the end Joy exclaimed, “Salu, I feel so free today”. Today I feel a great sorrow within me as I have to say Good bye to Joy. Joy has now left us. He had a grand funeral with a large crowd of mourners both at the mass in the Indian Institutions’ Auditorium and at his burial in the Jesuit Cemetery at Mount St Joseph. At the end of it all, one poor woman, weeping exclaimed: “Devaranthaa Manushyaru”, meaning a “God-like person”. She must have been one of the many poor persons who had experienced Joy’s quiet generosity and genuine humanity. We feel the loss of Joy. We miss him. But just a brief moment of silence would make him come alive with his characteristic smile and bubbling enthusiasm. Joy is now beckoning us to be messengers of great tidings of joy. He is calling us to be simple, compassionate and above all HUMAN. Therefore, even as we pray for him that he may be fully reconciled with God let us also pray to him that he may obtain for us the grace of being what he was – HUMAN, and therefore, “Devaranthaa Manushyaru”. -Henry Saldanha SJ 12/12
