MEDIA EVALUATION
JETT WESTWOOD MEDIA AS
TEXT
IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE/DEVELOP/CHALLENGE
FORMS AND CONVENTIONS REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
▸ When planning for our main task, we looked at a range of popular thriller movies. We
decides to focus our attention on the crime thrillers “Kidulthood” and “Adulthood”. We
began to look at the way these films have used criminal activity in teenagers to build
tension.
▸ We were very inspired by the way regional identity is used in the teenagers from London
to portray a life of crime. The use of teenagers makes the crime seem relatable as they
are of similar age and have similar characteristics to us as a group personally. By looking
at these films we have included soundtracks of the grime variety to match the theme and
music of the teen youth depicted in our title sequence. The use of crime in our thriller is
depicted through the use of narcotics, police suspect boards and police investigation
voice overs to create the build of suspense of having the police on a case about
something that people like us could have experienced. Our title sequence follows the
Dominance gender theory as our main character is a male and our victim is a female. This
is a common role seen in many media films and thrillers such as James Bond.
TEXT
▸ The crime Thriller ill manors was a big inspiration
for the typography of our thriller. We admired the
way that plain white typography looked and how
simplistic measures can be used to create drastic
meaning . The idea was developed as we
decided that the white typography would look
better upon a blackout shot as is makes the
typography more visible and draws attention
strictly to the title itself without any moving
distractions. This means that the audience will be
able to read and have a full understanding of the
titles shown in our sequence rather than looking
at a moving shot and being distracted from the
titles. We also decides to develop the typography
and used a distressed font, portraying the
distresses and loose lifestyle the teen youth we
are representing in our sequence carry out.
TEXT
▸ We have also developed the use
of props and recreational drugs
to portray the day to day
happenings and activities of the
teen youth. We decided to
develop the idea and be more
dramatic and replicated the
abuse of alcohol and narcotics to
increase the dangerous
reputation of the teen youth in
London, striking stereotypes into
the minds of the audience. We
decided not to use typography
over the shot as mentioned in the
previous slide.
TEXT
▸ We decided to use a casual
costume for our actors to replicate
the casual approach that the teen
youth in London has towards drugs
and crime. The use of trainers in
our title sequence emphasises this
approach. We also thought the use
of trainers in our title sequence was
symbolic to having more ability to
run away from the police after a
crime has been witnessed by the
police apposed to wearing more
formal shoes meaning that they
can not run as fast.
TEXT
▸ Grime was the chosen genre of
our music/soundtrack of our
title sequence as it created by
the youth in London on which is
frowned upon by the
government. The name “grime”
connoted dirtiness and
grittiness and is symbolic to
how the Teen Youth in London
have do get down in the nitty
gritty of life to make something
of themselves.
TEXT
▸ I decided to edit the title sequence so
that it would be somewhat jolty and
jagged to create a loose and space
feel to it. This is symbolic to how life
for the teen youth in London never
seems straight its just a rocky road that
has to be repeatedly struggled
through. It also adds tension for the
audience as they are on the edge of
their seats wondering what could
possibly happen next. This was heavily
inspired by the thriller se7en as their
use of disjointed and “jagged” like
editing proved very effective.
TEXT
HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
▸ We have decided to represent the social group of age in our media product, particularly
those in the teenage realm. We have reflected on todays society, acknowledging the
misconduct of drugs and alcohol at teen parties and the dangerous outcome it has on them
as teenagers. As a group, we decided that this was a very good social group to represent as
we are part of the social group ourselves. Although were not drug taking, alcohol abusers
we have experienced situations around us similar to there one represented in our media
product (obviously less drastic).
▸ We decided to dwell on the fact that our representation of this social group is extremely
relatable. We used this to our advantage to increase tension which is a common convention
of the thriller genre. The voice overs in our title sequence represent the police speaking
through walkie talkies swell as the suspect boards representing the police investigating the
crime scene. This portrays a mysterious portrayal of the police and how they are forever
watching teenagers and what they do. It also creates a sense of tension and danger as
incidents such as the one featured in out title sequence is happening all around us and we
never know when it could happen with the activities we carry out as teenagers.
TEXT
WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY ?
▸ On the basis that our title sequence was to be made a full
product, i feel that a variety of media institutions could
distribute it. Certain distributions are ruled out obviously
as it isn't some what educational or a documentary so
National Geographic are unlikely to distribute it. The lines
between a crime and thriller are very blurred in our title
sequence meaning that institutions with a range of media
products with different genres may distribute it such as
Netflix or the BBC.
TEXT
▸ A more realistic form of distribution would be for our
media product to be distributed through social media. This
could mean it being uploaded to youtube, platforms such
as Facebook and Twitter etc. An alternate route is a
cinematic institution such as HanWay films which distribute
the biggest inspiration for our title sequence “Kidulthood”.
TEXT
WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT?
▸ From the research we have conducted, we believe that our
target audience that of teenagers as we want our media
product to relate to the pressures of drugs and alcohol. We
want our media product to relate to people to build tension and
make our media product to stay in their mind. We based our
media product on teenagers so the people who would relate to
that would mainly be other teenagers. Inspirations such as “ill
manors” and “Kidulthood” has inspired our relatable and
realistic feel and drug and alcohol references. The age rating we
think an institution would give our media product is a 15.
TEXT
HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?
▸ We wanted to relate to and attract the teenage audience.
This was heavily inspired by “Kidulthood” and “ill Manors”
as they explore drugs and alcohol used in the adolescence
of adultood. We felt this was the best way to address our
audience and relate to teenagers. Personally, we decided
that the content we featured in our media product isn't
suitable for those of 12 years of age and under as we have
used drugs and alcohol references ( we show references to
vodka and cocaine).
TEXT
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?
▸ Equipment errors such as our tripod breaking and the battery
running out was a technological problem we faced during filming.
We did however efficiently set up our equipment and we didn't
spend too much time setting up and focused on filming our media
product. As the editor of our group, I learnt and extraordinary
amount about the editing software Adobe Premiere Pro CS5. At
first I did not know a lot about the software as I had never used it
before or had any particular background with it. I managed to teach
myself how to edit through personal trial and error and youtube
tutorials to help me. I managed to gain a lot of technological skill in
this field to edit our product and improve a lot of our title sequence.
TEXT
LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL
PRODUCT.
▸ From our preliminary task We feel that we have learnt more
about shot types and how to use them in combined with
our story-line to help shape meaning and understanding in
terms of representation. In terms of editing, i have learnt a
lot about developing our footage and improving it since
our preliminary task in terms of synchronising footage to
the soundtrack and changing the colour gradients to
improve and change our footage. I have learnt how to use
the software to edit a lot better since our preliminary task
as I have developed experience and techniques.
