Peter has mixed emotions when he sees the bright, shiny and new penny. He realizes that his
father had never forgotten that day; the two of them sitting together in the sand and expressing
their love for each other. Ultimately, this story reveals that love is not always expressed verbally.
The penny is the symbol of love and dream between Peter and his father. In the second story, "A

He explores the importance of tradition in relation to formal 'schoolbook' knowledge. His father
was an expert in finding fresh water source by using a mere alder branch. His father also tried to
pass this skill to his son; however, as the son grows up and become old, the son forgets the life
lesson he was once taught. When he is given an opportunity to remember the talent passed down by
his father in his early childhood, he struggles to perform the secret. As he struggles to hear the
gushing water and the branch to writhe, a fellow farmer says, "Nowadays, fathers can't pass on
anything to the next generation." This quote is very powerful, because it directly points to the moral

he does from his son. Do we know what he thought those nights alone without his wife? No, we do
not. Edmund did not take the time to find out. He even apologizes when he said, "Had I been older
and more intelligent, of course, it might have been him, and not of myself that I should have been
thinking." Yet, still thinking of himself, he states, "This is not to be dwelt on here." Of course it isn't
Edmund, it is an autobiography, it is about you.
Edmund, we know would argue that. He tries to take the spotlight off of himself. Being the type of
person that he is, the always goes back to talking about himself. In the last numerical chapter of the
book, Edmund tells of an apocalyptic event, a noteworthy action worthy of ending a book on...his
transcendence into heaven. His epiphany is quickly grounded by reality. Nothing happens. His ego
is shattered. HIS ego, Edmund's ego. This catalytic event puts an emotional and spiritual division

touching as the son dies. The irony there is the father thinks that the son is talking to his friends
while he is actually being murdered by them. When he sees his son falling down he rushes

of Happyness both depict a story between a father and son using each other as a means of survival

The boys learn to cope with the struggles of their everyday lives. Being raised in this cruel
environment the boys learn to survive with barely anything and seem to become more mature
because of this. People tend to look up to their elders to learn life lessons when placed in a tough

The relationship between a father and son take center stage in two unique poems that center on
family situations. Each poem is a snapshot in time that exhibits striking similarities and vast
differences in the interaction between father and son. For instance, "My Papa's Waltz" from
Theodore Roethke, clearly demonstrates a fun loving father that really enjoys his liquor. To his
wife's chagrin, he truly lives in the moment and loves to rough house with his young son.
"Those Winter Sundays' from Robert Hayden, showcases a no nonsense, hard man that appears to
be void of happiness or fun. He takes life very seriously and expects the same of his young son.
