If the pavement temperature is less than 40°F (4°C), it can be warmed with a
torch or heat lance. Heating the pavement will also remove moisture, assuring a
dry surface.
Ensure the pavement temperature exceeds
40F (4C) during application.
25. 25
• Mask the perimeter of the repair area with fabric
tape to ensure no excess material will be on the
surface of the pavement.
• Prime the entire repair area including side and
bottom surfaces, using a brush or spray applicator.
• Allow the primer to dry to the touch before applying
TechCrete.
Installation - Preparation
Primer must be re-applied if TechCrete is installed
more than 24 hours after priming.
26. Installation - Application
The temperature of TechCrete should be between 375°F (190°C) and a
maximum of 400°F (204°C) prior to applying to the pavement
Best practice is use a heat

TechCrete is the most advanced flexible concrete solution for highway and airport pavement rehabilitation!
It is gray in color, aesthetically suitable in all concrete pavements, and is used in sealing wide cracks and joints, and repairing a large variety of pavement distresses in Portland Cement Concrete Pavement and Asphalt Concrete Pavement. Pavement distresses appropriate for TechCrete include but are not limited to: A) Cracking (Corner breaks, Longitudinal and transverse cracking), B) Joint Deficiencies (Spalling of longitudinal and transverse joints), C) Surface Defects (Map cracking and scaling, Popouts), and D) Miscellaneous distresses (Blowups, Faulting of transverse joints and cracks, Lane-to-shoulder dropoff, Lane-to-shoulder separation, and Patch/Patch deterioration). TechCrete is used in highway, street, road, parking lot, bridge decks, airport taxiways and runways, and other pavement surfaces. The unique design features of TechCrete produce an impervious, impact-resistant; load-bearing, flexible repair that withstands vehicle traffic, aircraft, movement and climatic conditions.
Crafco manufacturer’s three grades of TechCrete: TechCrete R, TechCrete TBR, and TechCrete Fibre Mastic. We will discuss each of these grades throughout this presentation.
TechCrete-R and TechCrete-TBR are a hot-applied, flexible mastic sealant compound made of polymer-modified synthetic resin containing fibers, fillers, fines and high quality aggregate. TechCrete-R and TechCrete-TBR are supplied in powder / granular form in meltable bags.
TechCrete Fibre Mastic is a hot-applied, flexible mastic sealant compound made of ploymer-modified synthetic resin containing chopped fiberglass, fillers, fines, high quality aggregate and 0.5-1.0% steel fiber
Product Recommended Use
TechCrete-R (“TC-R”)
Contains ideal pre-measured, pre-mixed combination of proprietary binder and fine aggregate designed to provide all the benefits of TechCrete.
TC-R contains smaller aggregate than TC-TBR and is used in shallow repairs where neat edge feathering is required.
Cracking and Joint Deficiencies
TC-R is designed to treat wide cracking and joint deficiencies with a minimum joint width of 1.5 in (38 mm) up to 4 in (100 mm) wide and up to full-depth repairs.
Surface Defects and Miscellaneous Distresses
TC-R is designed to treat most other distresses (spalls) as partial-depth repairs up to ¾ in (20 mm) deep.
Product Recommended Use
TechCrete-TBR1 (“TC-TBR”)
Contains ideal pre-measured, pre-mixed combination of proprietary binder and aggregate designed to provide all the benefits of TechCrete.
TC-TBR contains larger aggregate than TC-R and is used in larger and deeper repairs.
Cracking and Joint Deficiencies
TC-TBR is designed to treat wide cracking and joint deficiencies greater than or equal to 2 in (50 mm) wide and up to full-depth repairs.
Surface Defects and Miscellaneous Distresses
TC-TBR is designed to treat most other distresses (spalls) as partial-depth repairs from ¾ to 8 in (20 to 200 mm) deep.
For deeper repairs, while not required, TechCrete can be bulked with additional aggregate – contact your Crafco representative.
Product Recommended Use
TechCrete FIBRE MASTIC2(“TC-FM”)
Contains ideal pre-measured, pre-mixed combination of proprietary binder and fine aggregate plus 0.5-1% steel fibers.
TC-FM without structural aggregate contains smaller aggregate similar to TC-R and is used in shallow repairs where neat edge feathering is required.
TC-FM with structural aggregate contains larger aggregate similar to TC-TBR and is used in larger and deeper repairs.
Cracking and Joint Deficiencies
TC-FM without structural aggregate is designed to treat wide cracking and joint deficiencies with a minimum joint width of 1.5 in (38 mm) up to 4 in (100 mm) wide and up to full-depth repairs.
TC-FM with structural aggregate is designed to treat wide cracking and joint deficiencies greater than or equal to 2 in (50 mm) wide and up to full-depth repairs.
Surface Defects and Miscellaneous Distresses
TC-FM is designed to treat most other distresses (spalls) as partial-depth repairs from ¾ to 8 in (20 to 200 mm) deep.
TC-FM is designed to increase productivity in repairing deep distresses vs. TC-TBR. The addition of bulking stone reduces the number of lifts required for deep distresses and will cool deep distresses quicker improving time to traffic use. However, TC-FM requires field mixing and blending that increases the potential for variability and application errors that may reduce effectiveness compared to TC-TBR.
Crafco TechCrete is the long-term solution for distressed concrete pavement preservation. Spalled concrete caused by fatigue, freeze/thaw cycles, warping stress, ingress of water, or substrate problems can lead to costly reconstruction.
Crafco TechCrete is a proven hot pour repair solution different from conventional rigid repair methods. Due to its flexibility, high tensile strength, ability to bridge joints, and high compressive resistance, TechCrete creates a long lasting concrete repair. Conventional rigid cement repairs such as epoxy or fast curing cementitious products often fail due to debond, fatigue, and differential expansion characteristics, all resulting in additional cracking and the need for repeated repairs. These methods of repair have not only proven to be expensive, but also short term. Once in place, Crafco TechCrete will conform to the pavement movement and will not debond or crack. The TechCrete repair system has excellent adhesion and a high friction surface ideally suited for Thin Bond Repair (TBR), multi-corner slab repairs, joint intersection repairs, recessed applications and more.
Repairs with Crafco TechCrete can be opened up to traffic within as little as one hour. TechCrete is the most advanced flexible concrete solution available for highway and airport pavement rehabilitation. With Crafco TechCrete, it’s a one time fix!
Now that we understand what TechCrete is, its attributes and uses, let’s look more closely at some of its useful applications.
TechCrete repairs wide cracks that are greater than 1.5” (3.8 cm) wide.
TechCrete repairs longitudinal cracks. Unrepaired cracks will allow infiltration of water and debris into the pavement resulting in raveling and potholes. TechCrete will fill the void and waterproof the area.
TechCrete will fill the void and improve ride quality, for D cracking caused by freeze/thaw cycles.
Joint failures can be a major safety issue for motorcycles, etc. Using TechCrete for this type of repair also improves ride quality and decreases wear/tear on vehicles.
TechCrete repairs multi-corner slab distresses and corner breaks.
Spalls and pop-outs are repaired with Crafco TechCrete.
TechCrete is used to repair potholes. Potholes at airport are especially dangerous as this pavement distresses on runways can cause serious safety issues for aircraft.
Techcrete products are supplied in solid form in a meltable plastic bag in a cardboard box or in boxless meltable PLEXI-melt packaging. To use, the product is placed in a Crafco Patcher I or II or other approved melter to mix and heat to the proper installation temperature. If inappropriate melters are used, application difficulties, pump system damage, and extreme wear can result. Ensure that the equipment being used is able to melt and agitate materials with aggregates. Sealant melters should never be used for mastic applications as severe damage will occur.
Place appropriate traffic controls in accordance with Part 6, of the FHWA Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) to protect the work site for the duration of the repairs.
After marking the perimeter of the repair area, use suitable equipment (saws, planers, pneumatic hammers, etc.) to remove the defective pavement. Remove sufficient pavement to ensure Techcrete is bonding to sound intact pavement.
Remove all loose debris from the work site. Clean and dry the repair area with a Crafco hot air lance (Crafco part No. 45650) capable of producing a continuous stream of clean, dry compressed air, free of oil and moisture, at a minimum of 90 psi (620 kPa) to remove dust, debris or loose pavement fragments.
Product should only be applied on surfaces that are expected to remain at 40°F (4°C) or higher until project completion. Pavement temperature lower than 40F may reduce adhesion due to presence of moisture or ice.
If installing at night, assure that dew is not forming on the pavement surface. Applied product should be checked by qualified personnel to ensure that adhesion is adequate.
Once the torch or heat lance is finished, primer can be applied to surfaces that have cooled to air temperature (at least 40°F (4°C). The perimeter of the repair area is to be masked with a fabric tape to ensure no excess material will be on the surface of the pavement. Primer has cured when it is dry to the touch. Primer drying time will vary depending on temperature, humidity, and concrete conditions but typically takes approximately 15 minutes at warm, dry conditions, to several hours at cooler damper conditions. Do not use an open flame to dry the primer.
Puddled or pooled primer in the repair area should be brushed out to speed drying and prevent bubbling from occurring. TechCrete must be installed on the same day that primer is applied. If TechCrete is installed on primed areas that are not cured sufficiently, adhesion may be reduced.
Techcrete must be melted in an appropriate indirectly heated melter with sufficient agitation to uniformly mix the product, such as the Crafco Patcher I or II. There’s no need to remove Techcrete material from its bag, just place into the melter. Remember to avoid mixing different types of TechCrete materials together.
Heat Techcrete to the application temperature range of 375°F (190°C) and 400°F (204°C) and the heat transfer oil temperature should not exceed 525°F (274°C). It is recommended that a secondary device be used to measure temperature of material (i.e. non-contact infrared thermometer, hand held thermometer, etc.) prior to application. Do not heat TC-R or TC-TBR continuously for longer than six hours.
Gravity feed the heated TechCrete directly into the repair area. Or pour into a Crafco TechCrete Bucket and then immediately pour into the repair area. Techcrete that has cooled while in the container to below the minimum application temperature shall be emptied back into the melter to reheat.
Allow TechCrete to cool to 120°F (49°C) or less prior to installing the final layer. The final, top layer should not be greater 0.75 in (19 mm) deep. For deep repairs (> 1.5 in (38 mm) overfill slightly ~ ⅛ in (3 mm) above the surface. For Diamond Grinding applications, please read the Diamond Grinding recommendations of the Techcrete installation instructions.
Work the Techcrete material into the edges of the repair area and level the surface with a heated iron such as the Crafco Ironing Wand. Be careful not to over-float or over-work the material because the aggregate may settle to the bottom of the repair layer and may not maintain consistent aggregate dispersion.
A slight overfill accommodates for material shrinkage as Techcrete cools from application temperature to ambient conditions. Allow bubbles to expel from the applied Techcrete material.
Prior to applying the surfacing aggregate, quickly expose the surface of the TechCrete material to hot compressed air or a flame to remove any surface bubbles and to heat the surface to adhere the chips.
Apply dry surfacing aggregate while the TechCrete patch surface temperature is 225°F ± 25°F (107°C ± 14°C), as measured with a non-contact infrared thermometer.
TechCrete cools around the perimeter surface of a repair before the center surface. Where practical, the surfacing aggregate should be applied around the perimeter first and then applied to the center, after the temperature falls into range. Ensure that the surfacing aggregate is applied so it completely covers the patch surface.
After Techcrete has cooled to the surrounding pavement surface temperature, perform the final cleaning with a sweeper or vacuum to remove any surplus surfacing aggregate prior to opening to traffic. Excess surfacing aggregate can be reused if kept clean, dry and uncontaminated.
Quite often diamond grinding is scheduled as part of the maintenance project after the application of the TechCrete repair. If diamond grinding is scheduled to occur on the pavement and TechCrete repairs as part of the maintenance project, follow the TechCrete Grinding Instructions instead of the above surfacing aggregate instructions.
TechCrete is a hot-applied polymer modified resin with unsurpassed adhesion so it resists delamination and cracking while remaining flexible during the expansion and contraction of the adjacent concrete surface in all weather extremes.
Rigid repair materials like cement, phosphate and epoxy can prematurely fail because they are brittle, and their rigidness and different rates of expansion destroy the concrete surrounding the patch. TechCrete is flexible, strong and adheres to the pavement, so it expands and contracts with the pavement
Unlike other products that require regular maintenance, TechCrete provides a maintenance-free, long-lasting repair saving time and money.

Epoxy and concrete-based materials can shatter under heavy loads and high impact, especially in very cold conditions. TechCrete has high tensile strength and compression resistance to withstand the impact of heavy truck traffic and airline jets in extreme weather conditions.
The flexible, heavy load-bearing characteristics of TechCrete provide a smooth ride for all vehicles saving money with less vehicular damage.
Safety is a priority for everyone, and TechCrete provides a high-friction surface that promotes safety and reduces accidents.
TechCrete meltable bags are placed into the Patcher to melt, providing a precise, controlled mixture for consistently superb monolithic results. Then TechCrete is poured into the distress, leveled and cooled generally within one hour. This reduces costs associated with incorrect product mixtures, errors and reconstruction, and minimizes the need for special training.
TechCrete resists commonly-used chemicals that destroy pavement such as silicone grease and de-icing agents like ethylene glycol, sodium chloride, trisodium phosphate and potassium acetate.
