• established in 2003
• is a Private Law Legal Person, of public utility,
supervised by the Minister for the Environment,
Energy and Climate Change.
•Main objectives are to conserve the natural
environment and preserve the ecological balance
in the frame of the sustainable development.

3. Protected areas
"A clearly defined geographical space, recognised,
dedicated and managed, through legal or other
effective means, to achieve the long-term
conservation of nature with associated ecosystem
services and cultural values”. (IUCN)
In Greece, about 400 areas (25%) of special
ecological interest were integrated in the European
network of protected areas NATURA 2000. Aim of
the registration of areas in Natura network is the
preservation, sustainable management and
promotion of the areas.
Lake Pamvotis and its watershed have
been registered in Natura 2000 network

4. Protected area of Lake Pamvotis
•Age: 5-7 million years-one of the
most ancient lakes in Europe
•Surface area: 22 km2 (the largest
lake in Epirus).
•average depth: 4,5m (shallow lake).
•maximum depth 8,5m
•Lake’s level: almost 470m
•Length of shoreline
(perimeter):21km
•The lake has been formed from
water concentration, it is fed from
mountain Mitsikeli springs

8. Sensitization - Awareness raising
One of the main responsibilities of
Management Authority of Lake Pamvotis is
environmental information and awareness. In
that framework, many educational and
ecosystem interpretation activities for schools
and the local community are organized and
many schools from Greece and abroad are
participating.
we believe that through these activities
people, esp. the young ones, may gradually
change attitudes and behaviors towards the
environment.

Aim
information and awareness of local community and
especially young people to the lake's ecosystem and
the pressures it is facing, in order to contribute to
the protection and sustainability of Lake Pamvotis.

10. Ecosystem Interpretation Park of Lake Pamvotis
Design of the park was based on
the principles of ecological
design, thereby the existing relief
and vegetation was maintained
and natural materials, such as
wood, gravel, stone and plants of
the Greek Flora were used.
The park is ideal for education for sustainable
development activities. Visitors, esp. student groups,
have the chance to learn about the Protected Area and
the ecosystem of the lake, its reach biodiversity, water
cycle, and its values for man. Activities include
birdwatching, landscape observation, environmental
paths and environmental games.
