Of Career & Vocational Guidance. (Again use search box and look at librarian) Riley Guide: Where to search gives you job banks by industry & geographic area. Great article on how to prepare scannable & plain text resume in the Resumes & Cover letters section Job Hunters Bible: Testing section is good for career changers, exploration Practical & realistic advice 9:25-9:35

Salary Info- Occupational Outlook- easier to find- Who tried Dept of Labor or another route. 9:35– 9:40

Keohane Business Resources for Librarians 11-29-11 Need a strong Company directory like ReferenceUSA, to really cast a net & develop target list Business & Company Resource Center- doesn’t provide a lot on small companies but is great for company histories, industry overviews, includes brands & their companies Very good for emerging industries, industry info, reading trade journals, finding key words, terms, issues Lots of for profit people are targeting non-profit companies- Bridgestar- good for job boards/ articles about how to transition To research specific organizations Guidestar: Search (entrepreneurship & CT) Look at Bogaslowski Foundation Registering gives you access to 990 (can be a year old) Requires Login an Advanced Search CT.org- Lots of interest in Tech companies and emerging industries 9:40 – 9:45

Look also at the How do I Research Business Name Availability, Click on Business Entity Formation Hint: print these out as handouts for your patrons SBA- improved tremendously Has solid articles and links to SCORE – online access to mentors Business Owners Toolkit: Note the list of topics including exiting out of a business Note: Search box Note: Tools, sample forms etc. 9:45 – 10:00

Of Associations First stop for a lot of small businesses. Difficult for Gift basket crowd CT Town Profiles/ Research Data Note various ways to access data Note XLS files in tables Cerc data- hard to find- used to buy Sourcebook of zipcode demographics. Biz Stats- most often point out the benchmark your business Point out sources of info at bottom of page, point out new sole proprietor info 10:35 – 10:50

Keohane Business Resources for Librarians 11-29-11 Yahoo finance- Need to switch to investing Look at Home page first- Look at the updates to webpage section Switch to investing – Historical stock quotes back to 1970 and some earlier, note also additional info on bonds, mutual funds etc. (GE as example- goes back to 1962) Yahoo Finance- Show mutual fund look up and Morningstar info Look up Old Mutual High Yield (ODHYX), go to fund profile and point out morningstar ratings and box diagram. Yahoo finance- Go to Personal Finance- Retirement info-Point out videos and articles from Kiplinger Investor words- show annuities Stock Naked/ Stock Answers (link is a mess- search archives)- Oldie but a goodie Bottom line you won’t find price for discontinued or absorbed stocks- must trace back, find old code and look up on microfilm – pays to know who has them. The NYT & HC historical you can see the stock charts- just difficult
