The Holy Trinity Reveals Himself to Sinners
Is. 6:1-7; Rom. 11:33-36; John 3:1-17; Psalm 29
Memorization Verses:
Is. 6:3 ―Holy, holy, holy is
the LORD Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.‖
Rom. 11:33-34 Oh, the depth of the
riches of the wisdom and knowledge of
God! How unsearchable his judgments,
and his paths beyond tracing out!
John 3:16 For God so loved the world
that he gave his one and only Son, that
whoever believes in him shall not perish
but have eternal life.
Psalm 29:2 Ascribe to the LORD the
glory due his name; worship the LORD in
the splendor of his holiness.
Hypostases: ―One God in three persons‖.
The three persons are distinct, yet are one
―substance, essence or nature‖ (What not
who).
Each person is God, whole and entire,
but distinct from one another in their
relations of origin. Father generates, Son
begotten, Spirit proceeds. Distinct in
relations with one another, they are one
in all else.

In peace, let us pray to the Lord:
Lord, have mercy.
1. That we may be strengthened
by the revelation of the One, true
God: Father, Son and Holy
Spirit, coeternal, coequal — one
God in three persons, the Trinity in
Unity and Unity in Trinity — in
whom we have been baptized, and
by whose grace we live and move
and have our being…
2. That we may be renewed in
faith and zeal by the incarnation of
our Lord Jesus Christ, who took
our humanity into Himself in order
to bear our sin, suffer our
death, reconcile us to the Father
and restore us to everlasting life;
and that, through faith in Him and
His promises of mercy, we may be
given courage to stand before Him
on the Last Day clothed in His
righteousness, innocence and
blessedness…
3. That by His Word and Spirit we
may be defended against every
form of false teaching, pluralism
and worldly wisdom, which would
compromise our faithful
confession of the one true
God, weaken our faith in Him who
alone is the Way, the Truth and the
Life, and thereby imperil our
salvation and threaten to cause us
to perish eternally…
4. That God would bless our
catechists and catechumens, that
both those who teach and those
who learn would be conformed to
the image of Christ, formed firmly
in the faith once entrusted to the
saints, preserved in their baptismal
grace, made fit partakers of the
Sacrament of our Lord‘s body and
blood, and be strengthened thereby
for faithful service in this world, to
the praise of His glorious grace…

5. That, especially on this Memorial
Day weekend, our Father in heaven
would be pleased to accept our
thanksgiving for those who have
served our nation through military
service, especially those who have
made the supreme sacrifice,
beholding from afar the privileges
their sacrifice gained for us. That we
may be led to increasing gratitude
for the gifts we enjoy through them.
And that we, too, would find ways to
protect and increase these privileges
for those who come after us, looking
always to our heavenly Father
through whom they come…
6. That the Lord of mercy would
show His kindness to the sick,
[especially those whom we name
before him now_____________];
that He would preserve them in the
true faith while they suffer from
their afflictions, and that, according
to His good and gracious will, He
would give them either speedy
restoration to health or grace to live
faithfully and peacefully under their
crosses grants them deliverance from
their sorrows…
7. That in His great kindness and
love, the Lord Jesus would grant us
to partake worthily of His most
blessed Eucharist to His glory and
our abundant blessing…
OPEN PRAYER
8. That our kind Master would grant
us our portion with His saints in
light and raise us with them from the
dead to the glory of the new heavens
and new earth…
9. Into Your hands, O Lord, we
commend all for whom we pray,
trusting in Your mercy; through Him
who gave Himself for us, even Jesus
Christ, our Lord, who lives and
reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,
ever one God, world without end. O
blessed Trinity, glory to You! Amen.
1 Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest,
And make our hearts Your place of rest;
Come with Your grace and heav'nly aid
And fill the hearts which You have made.
2 To You, the Counselor, we cry,
To You, the gift of God Most High;
The fount of life, the fire of love,
The soul's anointing from above.
3 In You, with graces sevenfold,
We God's almighty hand behold
While You with tongues of fire proclaim
To all the world His holy name.
4 Your light to ev'ry thought impart,
And shed Your love in ev'ry heart;
The weakness of our mortal state
With deathless might invigorate.
5 Drive far away our wily foe,
And Your abiding peace bestow;
With You as our protecting guide,
No evil can with us abide.
6 Teach us to know the Father, Son,
And You, from both, as Three in One
That we Your name may ever bless
And in our lives the truth confess.
7 Praise we the Father and Son,
And Holy Spirit, with them One,
And may the Son on us bestow
The gifts that from the Spirit flow!

The Holy Spirit Reveals
Himself to Sinners
Isaiah 6:1-7
Isaiah’s Commission
6 In the year that King Uzziah died, I
saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated
on a throne; and the train of his
robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were
seraphim, each with six wings: With two
wings they covered their faces, with two
they covered their feet, and with two
they were flying.3 And they were calling
to one another:
―Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.‖
4 At the sound of their voices the
doorposts and thresholds shook and the
temple was filled with smoke.
5 ―Woe to me!‖ I cried. ―I am ruined! For
I am a man of unclean lips, and I live
among a people of unclean lips, and my
eyes have seen the King, the
Lord Almighty.‖
6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me
with a live coal in his hand, which he
had taken with tongs from the
altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and
said, ―See, this has touched your
lips; your guilt is taken away and your
sin atoned for.‖
Romans 11:33-36
Doxology
33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the
wisdom and[a] knowledge of God!
How unsearchable his judgments,
and his paths beyond tracing out!
34 ―Who has known the mind of the
Lord?
Or who has been his counselor?‖[b]
35 ―Who has ever given to God,
that God should repay them?‖[c]
36 For from him and through him and for
him are all things.
To him be the glory forever! Amen.
John 3:1-17
Jesus Teaches Nicodemus
3 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named
Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish
ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night
and said, ―Rabbi, we know that you are a
teacher who has come from God. For no one
could perform the signs you are doing if God
were not with him.‖
3 Jesus replied, ―Very truly I tell you, no one
can see the kingdom of God unless they are
born again.[a]‖
4 ―How can someone be born when they are
old?‖ Nicodemus asked. ―Surely they cannot
enter a second time into their mother‘s womb
to be born!‖
5 Jesus answered, ―Very truly I tell you, no
one can enter the kingdom of God unless
they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh
gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives
birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised
at my saying, ‗You[c] must be born
again.‘ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases.
You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where
it comes from or where it is going. So it is
with everyone born of the Spirit.‖[d]
9 ―How can this be?‖ Nicodemus asked.
10 ―You are Israel‘s teacher,‖ said Jesus, ―and
do you not understand these things? 11 Very
truly I tell you, we speak of what we
know, and we testify to what we have
seen, but still you people do not accept our
testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly
things and you do not believe; how then will
you believe if I speak of heavenly
things?13 No one has ever gone into
heaven except the one who came from
heaven—the Son of Man.[e]14 Just as Moses
lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the
Son of Man must be lifted up,[f]15 that
everyone who believes may have eternal life
in him.‖[g]
16 For God so loved the world that he
gave his one and only Son, that whoever
believes in him shall not perish but have
eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son
into the world to condemn the world, but to
save the world through him.
Psalm 29
A psalm of David.
1 Ascribe to the LORD, you heavenly
beings,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his
name;
worship the LORD in the splendor of
his[a]holiness.
3 The voice of the LORD is over the
waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the LORD thunders over the mighty
waters.
4 The voice of the LORD is powerful;
the voice of the LORD is majestic.
5 The voice of the LORD breaks the
cedars;
the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of
Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon leap like a calf,
Sirion[b] like a young wild ox.
7 The voice of the LORD strikes
with flashes of lightning.
8 The voice of the LORD shakes the desert;
the LORD shakes the Desert of Kadesh.
9 The voice of the LORD twists the oaks[c]
and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, ―Glory!‖
10 The LORD sits enthroned over the
flood;
the LORD is enthroned as King forever.
11 The LORD gives strength to his people;
the LORD blesses his people with
peace.
HOLY TRINITY
Isaiah 6:1–7
Romans 11:33–36
John 3:1–15 (16–17)
The Holy Trinity Reveals Himself to Sinners
When Isaiah beheld the glory of the Lord, he cried out ―Woe is me!” For the sinner cannot
stand in the presence of a holy God and live (Is. 6:1–7). But God the Father lifted up His
Son Jesus for us on the cross, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have
eternal life. This eternal life of Christ is given us according to the Holy Spirit‘s good
pleasure in Baptism. ―Unless one is born [again] of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter
the kingdom of God‖ (John 3:5). To sinners in fear of death, the messengers of God place
on our lips the living body and blood of Christ and speak His words of absolution, ―Your
guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for‖ (Is. 6:7). Having received forgiveness and life
from the Father through the Son by the Holy Spirit, we join with the angels in praising the
blessed Trinity, ―Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!‖ (Is. 6:3). ―For from Him and
through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen‖ (Rom. 11:33–36).

God’s Covenant with Abram
15 After these things the word of
the LORD came to Abram in a vision, ―Do not
be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your
reward shall be very great.‖ 2 But Abram
said, ―O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for
I continue childless, and the heir of my house is
Eliezer of Damascus?‖[a] 3 And Abram
said, ―You have given me no offspring, and so
a slave born in my house is to be my
heir.‖ 4 But the word of the LORD came to
him, ―This man shall not be your heir; no one
but your very own issue shall be your
heir.‖ 5 He brought him outside and said, ―Look
toward heaven and count the stars, if you are
able to count them.‖ Then he said to him, ―So
shall your descendants be.‖ 6 And he believed
the LORD; and theLORD[b] reckoned it to him as
righteousness.
1 John 4:16-21
16 So we have known and believe the love that
God has for us.
God is love, and those who abide in love abide
in God, and God abides in them. 17 Love has
been perfected among us in this: that we may
have boldness on the day of judgment, because
as he is, so are we in this world.18 There is no
fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for
fear has to do with punishment, and whoever
fears has not reached perfection in love. 19 We
love[a]because he first loved us. 20 Those who
say, ―I love God,‖ and hate their brothers or
sisters,[b] are liars; for those who do not love a
brother or sister[c] whom they have seen, cannot
love God whom they have not seen. 21 The
commandment we have from him is this: those
who love God must love their brothers and
sisters[d] also.
Luke 16:19-31
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 ―There was a rich man who was dressed in
purple and fine linen and who feasted
sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate lay a
poor man named Lazarus, covered with
sores, 21 who longed to satisfy his hunger with
what fell from the rich man‘s table; even the
dogs would come and lick his sores. 22 The
poor man died and was carried away by the
angels to be with Abraham.[a] The rich man
also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he
was being tormented, he looked up and saw
Abraham far away with Lazarus by his
side.[b] 24 He called out, ‗Father Abraham, have
mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of
his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I
am in agony in these flames.‘ 25 But Abraham
said, ‗Child, remember that during your
lifetime you received your good things, and
Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he
is comforted here, and you are in
agony. 26 Besides all this, between you and us a
great chasm has been fixed, so that those who
might want to pass from here to you cannot do
so, and no one can cross from there to us.‘27 He
said, ‗Then, father, I beg you to send him to my
father‘s house— 28 for I have five brothers—
that he may warn them, so that they will not
also come into this place of
torment.‘ 29 Abraham replied, ‗They have
Moses and the prophets; they should listen to
them.‘ 30 He said, ‗No, father Abraham; but if
someone goes to them from the dead, they will
repent.‘ 31 He said to him, ‗If they do not listen
to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be
convinced even if someone rises from the
dead.‘‖
Psalm 33:12-22
12 Happy is the nation whose God is the LORD,
the people whom he has chosen as his
heritage.
13 The LORD looks down from heaven;
he sees all humankind.
14 From where he sits enthroned he watches
all the inhabitants of the earth—
15 he who fashions the hearts of them all,
and observes all their deeds.
16 A king is not saved by his great army;
a warrior is not delivered by his great
strength.
17 The war horse is a vain hope for victory,
and by its great might it cannot save.
18 Truly the eye of the LORD is on those who
fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19 to deliver their soul from death,
and to keep them alive in famine.
20 Our soul waits for the LORD;
he is our help and shield.
21 Our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.
22 Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.

The Holy Trinity in Scripture

  • 1. The Holy Trinity Reveals Himself to Sinners Is. 6:1-7; Rom. 11:33-36; John 3:1-17; Psalm 29 Memorization Verses: Is. 6:3 ―Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.‖ Rom. 11:33-34 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Psalm 29:2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.
  • 2. Hypostases: ―One God in three persons‖. The three persons are distinct, yet are one ―substance, essence or nature‖ (What not who). Each person is God, whole and entire, but distinct from one another in their relations of origin. Father generates, Son begotten, Spirit proceeds. Distinct in relations with one another, they are one in all else. •How can you try to explain this mystery of the Christian faith to a new believer?

That we may be strengthened by the revelation of the One, true God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, coeternal, coequal — one God in three persons, the Trinity in Unity and Unity in Trinity — in whom we have been baptized, and by whose grace we live and move and have our being… 2. That we may be renewed in faith and zeal by the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ, who took our humanity into Himself in order to bear our sin, suffer our death, reconcile us to the Father and restore us to everlasting life; and that, through faith in Him and His promises of mercy, we may be given courage to stand before Him on the Last Day clothed in His righteousness, innocence and blessedness… 3. That by His Word and Spirit we may be defended against every form of false teaching, pluralism and worldly wisdom, which would compromise our faithful confession of the one true God, weaken our faith in Him who alone is the Way, the Truth and the Life, and thereby imperil our salvation and threaten to cause us to perish eternally… 4. That God would bless our catechists and catechumens, that both those who teach and those who learn would be conformed to the image of Christ, formed firmly in the faith once entrusted to the saints, preserved in their baptismal grace, made fit partakers of the Sacrament of our Lord‘s body and blood, and be strengthened thereby for faithful service in this world, to the praise of His glorious grace…

That, especially on this Memorial Day weekend, our Father in heaven would be pleased to accept our thanksgiving for those who have served our nation through military service, especially those who have made the supreme sacrifice, beholding from afar the privileges their sacrifice gained for us. That we may be led to increasing gratitude for the gifts we enjoy through them. And that we, too, would find ways to protect and increase these privileges for those who come after us, looking always to our heavenly Father through whom they come… 6. That the Lord of mercy would show His kindness to the sick, [especially those whom we name before him now_____________]; that He would preserve them in the true faith while they suffer from their afflictions, and that, according to His good and gracious will, He would give them either speedy restoration to health or grace to live faithfully and peacefully under their crosses grants them deliverance from their sorrows… 7. That in His great kindness and love, the Lord Jesus would grant us to partake worthily of His most blessed Eucharist to His glory and our abundant blessing… OPEN PRAYER 8. That our kind Master would grant us our portion with His saints in light and raise us with them from the dead to the glory of the new heavens and new earth… 9. Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Him who gave Himself for us, even Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. O blessed Trinity, glory to You! Amen.

  • 8. Isaiah 6:1-7 Isaiah’s Commission 6 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.3 And they were calling to one another: ―Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.‖ 4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 ―Woe to me!‖ I cried. ―I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.‖ 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, ―See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.‖

How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! 34 ―Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?‖[b] 35 ―Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?‖[c] 36 For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.
  • 10. John 3:1-17 Jesus Teaches Nicodemus 3 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, ―Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.‖ 3 Jesus replied, ―Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]‖ 4 ―How can someone be born when they are old?‖ Nicodemus asked. ―Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother‘s womb to be born!‖ 5 Jesus answered, ―Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‗You[c] must be born again.‘ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.‖[d] 9 ―How can this be?‖ Nicodemus asked. 10 ―You are Israel‘s teacher,‖ said Jesus, ―and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man.[e]14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[f]15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.‖[g] 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

And in his temple all cry, ―Glory!‖ 10 The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD is enthroned as King forever. 11 The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.
  • 12. HOLY TRINITY Isaiah 6:1–7 Romans 11:33–36 John 3:1–15 (16–17) The Holy Trinity Reveals Himself to Sinners When Isaiah beheld the glory of the Lord, he cried out ―Woe is me!” For the sinner cannot stand in the presence of a holy God and live (Is. 6:1–7). But God the Father lifted up His Son Jesus for us on the cross, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. This eternal life of Christ is given us according to the Holy Spirit‘s good pleasure in Baptism. ―Unless one is born [again] of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God‖ (John 3:5). To sinners in fear of death, the messengers of God place on our lips the living body and blood of Christ and speak His words of absolution, ―Your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for‖ (Is. 6:7). Having received forgiveness and life from the Father through the Son by the Holy Spirit, we join with the angels in praising the blessed Trinity, ―Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!‖ (Is. 6:3). ―For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen‖ (Rom. 11:33–36).

Gen. 15:1-6; 1 John 4:16-21; Luke 16:19-31; Psalm 33:12-22 Genesis 15:1-6 God’s Covenant with Abram 15 After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, ―Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.‖ 2 But Abram said, ―O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?‖[a] 3 And Abram said, ―You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir.‖ 4 But the word of the LORD came to him, ―This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir.‖ 5 He brought him outside and said, ―Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.‖ Then he said to him, ―So shall your descendants be.‖ 6 And he believed the LORD; and theLORD[b] reckoned it to him as righteousness. 1 John 4:16-21 16 So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. 17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world.18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. 19 We love[a]because he first loved us. 20 Those who say, ―I love God,‖ and hate their brothers or sisters,[b] are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister[c] whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. 21 The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters[d] also. Luke 16:19-31 The Rich Man and Lazarus 19 ―There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man‘s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham.[a] The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side.[b] 24 He called out, ‗Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.‘ 25 But Abraham said, ‗Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. 26 Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.‘27 He said, ‗Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father‘s house— 28 for I have five brothers— that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.‘ 29 Abraham replied, ‗They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.‘ 30 He said, ‗No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.‘ 31 He said to him, ‗If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.‘‖ Psalm 33:12-22 12 Happy is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage. 13 The LORD looks down from heaven; he sees all humankind. 14 From where he sits enthroned he watches all the inhabitants of the earth— 15 he who fashions the hearts of them all, and observes all their deeds. 16 A king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. 17 The war horse is a vain hope for victory, and by its great might it cannot save. 18 Truly the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, 19 to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. 20 Our soul waits for the LORD; he is our help and shield. 21 Our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. 22 Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us, even as we hope in you.
