[ENGL 419]
Project 2: Digital Story
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
In Project 1 we learned about the pragmatic rhetorical aspects of
writing for the Web: users, purpose, core model, pathways, helping
users follow “the scent of information” with smart headings and links,
etc. For this project, we’re going to add an affective layer onto our
knowledge of what makes good websites by focusing on what makes
things compelling. To do this, we’re going to focus on storytelling as
it applies to design, especially Web design.
TASK
Create a digital story about something, ideally a piece or
representation of the thing you have in mind for your larger semester
project. If you wanted to create a site about swimming holes in North
Idaho, for instance, you might create a “story” about one swimming
hole that takes an angle on the feelings and experience of being there,
what it was like to get there, what to look for, etc. If you ultimately

wanted to create a blog about makeup and makeup tips, you could
create a “story” of one tutorial.
It doesn’t matter what platform you use to create the story (though
ideally you may want to try out the platform you think you’ll
eventually use to create your larger semester project), but your story
MUST incorporate at least three media (i.e., the way in which
information is delivered: spoken text, written text, photos, graphics,
animation, video, sound, music, etc.). We will hopefully have a visitor
from the UI Library’s Center for Digital Inquiry and Learning (CDIL) to
talk about the different platforms; there are also tutorials for various
platforms available on Lynda.com.
