This document outlines a presentation on the links between HIV and nutrition. It defines key terms like HIV, the immune system, and nutrition. It describes how HIV attacks and weakens the immune system. A balanced diet is important for a healthy immune system. The document discusses how poor nutrition can affect people with HIV by increasing susceptibility to infections and slowing healing. It also explains how HIV impacts nutrition by reducing food intake and impairing nutrient absorption. The presentation recommends people with HIV consume whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and lean proteins to boost immunity.
4. OBJECTIVES
By the end of the presentation, we expect the audience to know
Definitions for HIV, Immune system and nutrition
Causes and symptoms of HIV
Relations between nutrition, the immune system and HIV
Relationship between nutrition and HIV
Effect of HIV on nutrition
Effects of nutrition on HIV
Good nutrition on HIV
5. HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS.
HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS (HIV) is an infection that attacks
the bodies immune system, specifically the white blood cells called CD4
cells. HIV destroys these CD4 cells, weakening a person’s immunity
against opportunistic infections such as tuberculosis and fungal infections,
severe bacterial infections and some cancers.
There is no cure for HIV yet hence it is only managed by antiretroviral
drugs which suppress the action of the virus. If not properly managed, it
leads to Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
Apart from these drugs, the human body also perform it function by fighting
6. IMMUNE SYSTEM
The immune system is a network of intricate stages and pathways
in the body which has a protection function against foreign invaders
like microbes, viruses and parasites.
The immune system is influenced by a balanced diet that’s a diet
consisting of all nutrients in their right proportion and supplements.
These nutrients helps the immune system in working as antioxidant
to protect health cells, supporting growth and activities of the
immune cells and producing antibodies.
Deficiency of a single nutrient can alter the body’s immune system.
7. NUTRITION
Nutrition according to NCI dictionaries is taking in and use of food and
other nourishing materials by the body. Nutrition is in 3-part process. First,
food is consumed. Second, the body breaks down the food into nutrients.
Third, the nutrients travel through the bloodstream to different parts of the
body to be used as “fuel” and other purposes like boosting the immune
system.
Adelle Davis an American most famous nutritionist once said “nearly every
health problem could be solved through nutrition”. Adelle Davis brought
about the ideology of “nutritionism” the idea that food should be valued
8. CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS OF HIV
HIV is mainly caused by virus which can be transmitted through unprotected sex,
sharing of sharp objects , pregnancy and breastfeesing and blood transfusion.
SYMPTOMS OF HIV
The signs and symptoms of HIV are
• Fever
• Night sweats
• sore throat
• mouth ulcer
9. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NUTRITION AND HIV
HIV progressively destroys the immune system leading to
periodic opportunistic infections(OIs)
debilitations and death. Opportunistic infections are infection
that takes the advantage of weak immune system. Poor
nutritional status is one of the major complications of HIV and
a significant factor in a highly severed AIDS. Research shows
that, many people who become infected with HIV may already
be undernourished. The weakened immune system further
increases their exposure to infections.

12. EFFECTS OF HIV ON NUTRITION
HIV affects nutritinal status in so many different ways .These effects can
occur simultaneously in the same person.
It reduce food consumption or intake
It increases energy needs
Reduced absorption of nutrient
13. EFFECTS OF NUTRITION ON HIV
Poor nutritional status can affect HIV in the following ways:
• Weakened immune system
• Increased susceptibility to Opportunistic infections (OIs)
• Slower healing process
• Possibly faster progression of disease
• Poorer response to treatment.
14. RECOMMENDATIONS
We that recommend that;
• HIV patients should includes whole grains like (brown rice and whole whole
wheat bread) in their diet which gives them energy.
• Patients shoud take plenty of fruits and vegetables which contains
antioxidants to help boost the immune system
• They should also include lean proteins on their diets to help build muscles and
strong immune system.
15. CONCLUSION
To conclude,HIV affects nutrition by reducing food consumption,Impairing nutrient
absorption and Increasing energy needs. And on the other hand, poor nutrition affects HIV
by decreasing immunity, Slowing the healing process and possibly hastening disease
progression
