New Students “Dream Launch” at Coetzenburg Stadium, Stellenbosch - Photo Credit, Justin Alberts
“Welcome to the Maties intake of
2014. This is the biggest and strong-
est intake of academic performance
ever for students at the University.”
Approximately 5000 new Maties
arrived in Stellenbosch last week to
start their studies at the University of
Stellenbosch. Students arrived from all
over South Africa with their parents at
their residences or private wards ready
to make Stellenbosch their new home.
New students participated in a “Dream
Launch” at Coetzenburg where they
were asked to write down their dreams
and give it flight by releasing their
balloons into the air.
The University’s Welcoming Pro-
gramme started with the official
welcoming event at the Danie Craven
Stadium at Coetzenburg during which
the Rector, Prof Russel Botman, wel-
comed first-year students and their
parents.
According to Prof Botman the Univer-
sity recently received confirmation that
Stellenbosch is the best in the country
in terms of student success rate. The
latest information is that 84.9% of stu-
dents passed their modules - the best
they have ever done and higher than
anywhere in the country.

National and Provincial Elections
You need to vote at the voting station where you’re registered to vote. However,
if you’re outside your voting district on Election Day you may vote at another voting
station in South Africa. If you’re outside the province where you’re registered, you’ll
only be able to vote in the national election and not the provincial election, and
you’ll be asked to complete a form (VEC 4) at the voting station.
Moved since you registered?
If you have moved (even a short distance) since you registered, your voting district
and voting station may have changed and you have to check your voter registra-
tion details Online or by SMS. Make a note of your voting station and voting district
number for your own record.
Go to the voting station finder URL link below and search for your current home
address. On the map, locate the voting district number. Compare the voting district
number to your registration details. If they’re not the same, you need to re-regis-
ter in your new voting district.
Municipal Elections and By-Elections
You need to vote at the voting station at which you’re registered.

Western Cape tourism showed sig-
nificant growth as the area continues to
welcome local and international visitors
for the summer season.
International tourist are laughing all
the way to South Africa with the Rand
plunging to a five year record low. It has
now become more affordable for more
foreigners to come to South Africa. The
weak Rand is drawing few complaints
from America at R11.09 to the $1.00,
Europe, at R15.16 to the €1.00, and
tourists from the United Kingdom at
R18.27 to the £1.00 (Forex - 26 January
2014). These foreign visitors have much
more spending money available for
accommodation, sightseeing entertain-
ment and tours thereby permitting them
to extend their stay, while visiting the
Western Cape.

The National Institute for Communica-

What is Congo Fever? It is con-

Stellenbosch Wine Festival
Out with the old,
in with the NEW
For the second year the Stellen-
bosch Wine Festival fills a spot on the
January calendar with a 10-day extrava-
ganza celebrating the start of the grape
harvest.
The Festival started Friday, 24
January and will run through to Sunday,
2 February 2014. It offers visitors not
only its natural beauty, cultural herit-
age, excellent academic institutions,
but also excellent wining and dining, a
harvest and street festival, wine expos,
speciality wine tasting and tours, art
exhibitions, sporting activities, cultivar
experiences, restaurant promotions and
other special events.
The Stellenbosch Harvest Parade cel-
ebrated the start of the grape harvest
season and the start of the Stellenbosch
Wine Festival with a flotilla of colourful
farm tractors, trucks, trailers and enter-
tainers, who made their way through the
streets of Stellenbosch. Apart from the
procession visitors had the opportunity
to wine and dine in the streets of Stellen-
bosch as well as in true European-style
in the historic Church Street.
The Pick n Pay Women’s 5 kilometre
Walk took the streets of Stellenbosch
in aid of breast cancer awareness and
prevention. This initiative formed part of
PinkDrive, an organisation that offers
free breast cancer screening in local
communities.
For the duration of the festival, wine
lovers will also be able to enjoy Winery
Experiences at about eighty wineries in
the region, while the American Express
Wine & Dine programme will feature
some of the top award-winning restau-
rants in the Stellenbosch region offering
special festival menus and promotions.
Longridge Wine Estate will transform
the historical street in front of the Town
Hallintoanelegantopen-airdiningvenue
for 300 distinguished guests where
canapés and bubbly will kick off the fine
dining experience. A three-course meal
paired with the award-winning wines
from the Longridge Wine Estate will be
served while guests enjoy live music by
a string quartet.
The Wine Expo will be hosted on Die
Braak from 31 January to 2 February
where the venue will be transformed
into an elegant, open-air lounge with
over sixty winery stands offering wine
tastings, a Pick n Pay Fresh and small
producers market and live entertain-
ment.
Proceeds from various events taking
place during the Stellenbosch Wine Fes-
tival will be donated to the Stellenbosch
Wine Festival Foundation where funds
are utilised for bursaries to disadvan-
taged young students, whose parents
work within the wine industry.

I am the Earth Project
Beaumont Primary School, situated in the Helderberg basin educate 1 200 learn-
ers from Grade R to Grade 7. The school has been awarded Eco School status
for the past 5 years, and maintain certain standards on recycling, serving the com-
munity, learning about cultural heritage and the conservation of plants and animals.
The school motto “Ut Prosim” (In Order to Serve) suit them well as they believe
that true excellence is achieved by using success to enrich the lives of others less
fortunate.
Beaumont is very excited about the Recycling Swop Shop that opened last year
at the Sir Lowry’s Pass Primary School. In this project, learners of the commu-
nity are encouraged to bring bags of recycling to the swop shop. They receive
points according to how much recycling
they have brought in. They redeem
these points in the swop shop for items
of clothing, school stationery, school
uniforms, books, toys or toiletries. This
way the environment is kept clean and
the children are taking an active role in
creating a greener future.
The school keeps the shop stocked
with toiletries, books, toys and non-
perishable food items received as

A dive with a difference
An adventurer’s haven lies nestled in the heart of the Little Karoo intriguing
people from around the world with a thrilling world-first! The opportunity to
come face-to-face with a prehistoric, cold-blooded creature, one that is sure
to get your heart racing!
The Cango Wildlife Ranch, in the unique Karoo town of Oudtshoorn, presents
its world-class natural encounters-programs, a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity for
people to interact with incredible animals; such as the Cheetah, Tiger, Lemur, Giant
Tegu, Cubs and Reptiles.
In 2004, the owners of the ranch, Andrew and Glenn Eriksen, decided it was time
to help change people’s perceptions of another animal, the enormous and feared
Nile Crocodile. In 2006 they implemented Croc-cage diving, a world first in both
adventure and conservation activities.
Once your ticket is purchased, you climb into the steel reinforced cage and are
slowly lowered into the water. You see the predator as clearly as it sees you! The
cage is lowered next to the crocodile to ensure a really close view, close enough to
count their teeth! You will be in safe, but in scary waters, as the underwater photog-
raphers capture every moment on camera. The intimidating experience of looking
into the crocs eyes; not quite knowing how safe you are, or if he is going to strike
… it is a truly humbling experience.
They are fed three times a week, and the feeding times never coincide with a dive.
The whole goal is to view them in their relax surroundings, completely unhindered!
Cango Wildlife Ranch is on a par with some of the best animal experiences in the
world and is one of only four facilities in Africa to have obtained accreditation from
the Standards-Body in the zoological industry.
The guided tour is on average an hour long, and an extra 15-20 minutes can be
added per encounter.

Explore Brandy Country
With a long, rich history in brandy making dating back to 1672, the world’s finest
brandies emanate from South Africa. Rooted in age-old traditions, South African
brandy is one of the country’s most iconic products; and is a most-loved distilled
drink.
The Western Cape Brandy Route and the R62 Brandy Route, might just be the
only brandy routes in the world. For wine lovers to go on a brandy journey is not
such a big leap: brandy is made from wine after all. The Western Cape Brandy
Route leads you through the heart of fine wine country: Stellenbosch, Paarl, Fran-
schhoek, Wellington and the new high-lying Elgin area.
For an evocative introduction to and overview of the art and science of more
than three centuries of Cape brandy making, begin your journey in Stellenbosch,
at Van Ryn’s Brandy Cellar. A guided tour, comparative style tasting and brandy-
and-chocolate pairing unlock a cornucopia of delectable sights, sounds, smells and
tastes. Move on to the renowned red wine cellar Kaapzicht which produces a pure
potstill brandy. Louiesenhof winemaker, Stefan Smit learnt from veteran distiller Jos
le Roux to make his Marbonne Potstill containing brandy aged for up to 16 years
in oak. Beautifully restored 1712 Uitkyk, offers a 10 Year Old, and modern Tokara
makes a rich pure pot-still five-year-old from fruit off 30-year-old vines.
Paarl brings you Backsberg, the home of the eponymous Sidney Back brandies.
Historic Laborie’s Alambic five-year-old brandy comes in an elegant, embossed

What you need to know before selecting an airline
If you’re flying domestically, it is easy to choose
an airline. You can make your decision based
on airfare, the number of flight connections and
departure time. Flying internationally is a whole
new ball game since there are various aspects to
consider which are departure and arrival times,
non-stop flights, connecting flights, safety and
many more.
Here are some facts you should consider when
choosing which International Airline you wish to fly
with on long-haul routes.
Airfare - Price is indeed the biggest factor in
deciding which airline you wish to fly with. It is
important to compare airfare prices. However,
it is not always a wise decision to consider the
lowest airfare. Sometimes it is feasible to pay a
little more for what you want. Here is a list of fees
you need to investigate to make sure that they are
included in your airfare before making your final
booking: excess baggage, seat selection, food &
beverage, cancellation/rebooking fees, taxes and
surcharges.
Safety - Have you ever wondered how safety
conscious the airline is you are about to board?
The FederalAviationAdministration (FAA) updates
the list of airlines and their compliance level each
month. The website, airlineratings.com rates 425
airlines around the world to help travelers choose
a carrier with the best safety record. Safety ratings
are based on the following international certifica-
tion standards: airworthiness, operations, air
navigation services, licensing, safety records, and
product ratings that include seating, in-flight enter-
tainment, meals, beds, blankets, pillows and the
carrier’s website.
Non-Stop Flights - It is ideal to find an airline
that travels to your international destination
without any stop-overs. However, it is not always
possible to fly direct, therefore you should find
an airline partner that travels to your destina-
tion. Non-stop flights are usually more expensive,
but will get you to your destination earlier. If you
decide to make a stop-over, make sure you have
enough time between your connecting flights.
Airline On-time record & dependability
The last thing you want while on vacation is to
have your flight cancelled or delayed for hours or
days. Verify the on-time statistics of the airline.
FlightStats.com can not only give you on-time
performance and cancellation statistics for most
major airlines worldwide, but can also supply
information for specific flights, delays, routes,
times, dates and even weather updates.
In-flight entertainment & connectivity (IFE&C)
For some travellers this is the most important
consideration when flying internationally. The
improvement of wireless connectivity and the
increasing trend of passengers using their own
personal devices such as iPhones, iPads, and
tablets, have dramatically changed the face of the
in-flight passenger experience. In-flight entertain-
ment can include movies, satellite TV, cable TV,
music videos, radio, games and Google Maps.
Restrictions and allowances - Before con-
firming your booking, you should verify the airline’s luggage
restrictions on checked-in baggage, hand baggage and seat
selection.
Airline Frequent Flyer Program - Determine if you can earn
extra miles on the airfare you’re paying by joining a frequent
flyer Program with the airline. Most airlines give suitable fare to
enable you to earn miles.
Airline loyalty - If you have airline loyalty the departure
time, flight time, connections and price would not matter to
you when booking a flight. Airline loyalty can also include
better service, boarding the plane first, upgrades and seating
with expanded leg space.
Airline cancellation and re-booking policy - You should
review the airlines cancellation and re-booking policies before
you fly. It may be worth your while to pay more for your ticket if
they have a better policy available. Enjoy your flight!

Every person’s opinion can be different when it comes to describing a
healthy lifestyle as everyone is unique with different needs. Wellness involves
both choice and action. The choice you make and the actions you take can
lead to a healthier life. By adopting these healthy living guidelines you can
keep yourself on track to achieve and live a healthy life.
Balance your diet - A nutritious diet includes adhering to a high intake of fruits,
vegetables and a low consumption of meat. Lean cuts of meat, low-fat dairy prod-
ucts, healthy fats and fibre can help you control your weight and blood pressure
and lower your cholesterol levels. Limit your intake of salt and sugar. The consump-
tion of water is very important in your diet and the experts say that you should drink
at least 8 glasses of water per day.
Participate in regular physical exercise - Regular physical activity enhances
or maintains physical fitness and overall health and wellness. Regular exercise
boosts the immune system, help prevent heart disease, diabetes, obesity and
mental health problems such as depression. Aim for at least 20-45 minutes of mod-
erate exercise five days a week.

The Newspaper challenged Legends
Studio, Somerset West to prove credibil-
itythroughtheuseoftheirLipoCavitation
Program. The Newspaper appointed
their candidate in the Program, called
LipoMan to be monitored from the
beginning of the treatment. Legends
suggested that a minimum of 6 sessions
is required to see positive results. After
the sessions a report will be published
with regard to the success achieved by
LipoMan.
The Newspaper is happy to report
LipoMan started the Lipo Cavitation
treatment on 3 January 2014. Three
body measurements were taken at the
beginning of each of the 6 treatments.
The first was the upper waist, followed
by the naval waist, and lastly the lower
waist, a section heavily impacted with
fat deposits.
Sessions were conducted every alter-
native day. Before each session the
Pomegranate Restaurant situated
on the Vergenoegd Wine Estate pre-
sents its patrons the flair of fine dining
in casual style. It’s enjoying lunch in the
ambiance of the historical 1773 Manor
House surrounded by beautiful views of
the winemaking Estate, mountains and
vineyards which takes any visitor back
to the days of yesteryear.
Pomegranate is Michael Israel’s trade-
mark on Fine Dining with a difference.
He has been in the trade for many years
and 2014 is the 20th anniversary of
Pomegranate Restaurant. Not only is
Michael the Executive Owner Chef, but
also the Sommelier. All dishes are finely
paired with a wine that blends in with the
choice of dish.
The Newspaper was privileged to
share in the taste of dishes prepared
with the best ingredients. The menu is
simple, but the fusion flavours speaks
another language.
The Gemsbok Carpaccio cured with
rock salt, juniper berry, cumin seed and
lemon zest, rocket leaves and finished
with drunken pecorino cheese, mustard
and red wine vinaigrette is a “must” on
the Starter list. On the other hand, the
Tomato Tart is to die for. This delicious
homemade puff pastry is topped with
pitted and skinned tomato, a little butter
and cream, oven baked and garnished
with fresh basil and chives freshly
picked from the garden. The Runner
Duck White wine is perfectly paired with
therapist recorded the three waist meas-
urements and then actively worked the
defined area. During each of the 6 ses-
sions of 20 minutes a high frequency
probe was moved over the abdomen
area to burst fat. At the end of the first
6 sessions The Newspaper is happy to
confirm that the waist measurement of
LipoMan showed a remarkable reduc-
tion of 8 cm. (went down two notches
in belt size)
What is Lipo Cavitation?
It is a high frequency sound wave
which penetrates the fat cell and even-
tually bursts the fat cell. The fat is
filtered through the lymph and the liver
and excreted through the bowel. It is
recommended that 1.5 litres of water
is consumed several hours prior to and
after each session. This plays a major
role in the success of the treatment.
Legends has found that cavitation
is excellent in kick-starting a persons
weight loss programme. It’s also
important not to indulge in food that
will negatively impact the Cavitation
process. It is furthermore recorded
that LipoMan adapted his daily food
consumption, removed starch from all
menus, and reduced all alcohol intake
to as little as two glasses of wine con-
sumed over a 14 day period.
The Newspaper will be back to report
on LipoMan’s treatment in the next
edition after the second 6 sessions.

The Duck Leg and Breast Confit, is well
cooked and served with a crispy finish,
dressed with a pomegranate white wine
jus and paired with Vergenoegd Caber-
net Sauvignon 2007. The Eland Fillet, a
Superior meat as a game choice is Char
grilled, finished in the oven, dressed
with a chocolate chilli red wine jus and
garnished with coppa.
If you fancy South East Asian dishes,
the Warm Seafood Salad and Vegetar-
ian dish will be the right choice.
The Chocolate Pancakes was the
dish of the day! Imagine a slab of dark
chocolate wrapped in a home-made
chocolate crepe then flamed in port
and coffee, dressed with the rich dark
sauce from the pan and finished with ice
cream! Delicious!
A perfect afternoon came to an end in
the presence of a wonderful host with a
sip of the Vin De Constance, a natural
sweet wine made by Klein Constantia,
said to be the finest natural sweet wine
in the world.

This is the time of the year where
thousands of people are enjoying the
summer sun at the most beautiful
beaches. However the sun is also dan-
gerous. The UV Index in our area is
between 9 - 11+ which means the sun
strength is very strong and the skin
burns quickly.
One of the most important causes of
skin cancer is exposure to ultraviolet
(UV) light from the sun or sunbeds.
What is ultraviolet (UV) rays from
the sun?
Ultraviolet is part of the electromag-
netic (light) spectrum that reaches the
earth from the sun. It has wavelengths
shorter than visible light, making it invis-
ible to the naked eye.
The ultraviolet (UV) radiation that
affects the skin is classified as: UVA,
(long wave) and UVB (short wave). UVA
and UVB penetrate the atmosphere and
play an important role in conditions such
as skin aging, eye damage, and skin
cancers.
Facts on UVA (Long wave)
- UVA is the longest of the UV rays,
penetrate the deeper layers of
the skin and plays a major role in
skin aging, skin wrinkling and skin
cancer.
- UVA rays account for up to 95%
of the UV radiation reaching the
earth.
- UVA is the dominant tanning ray,
causing damage to the skin’s
DNA.
- Tanning booths or Tan Cans
release 12 times more UVA as
the sun. People using them are
2.5 more times likely to develop
squamous cell carcinoma, and
1.5 times more likely to develop
basal cell carcinoma.
- Less intense than UVB.
- Penetrates the skin more than
UVB.
- Play major part in skin wrinkling.
- Penetrates glass and clouds.

alcohol should limit their daily intake to two or fewer servings

Enjoy life - Slowdown from your hectic lifestyle and enjoy
life. Take time to enjoy whatever you are doing, spend time
outdoors to appreciate nature, disconnect from your laptop
and iPhone, spend time with friends and family, drive slower
and stop multitasking by focusing on one thing at a time.
You don’t have to make all these changes at once!
Achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is an
ongoing process!
Facts on UVB (Short wave)
UVB is responsible for burning,
tanning, accelerating the skin aging and
also plays a key role in the development
of skin cancer. UVB varies by season,
location and time of day.

Morgenster Extra Virgin Olive Oil
achieves Top Score
Morgenster Extra Virgin Olive
Oil was awarded the top score of
98 points out of 100 in the Flos
Olei 2014 competition which
assesses the world’s best olive
oils. The Estate also received the
“Made with Love” award in the
section listing, the world’s 20 best
farms in the accompanying Flos
Olei 2014 - a guide to the world of
extra virgin olive oil.
Flos Olei 2014 is an annual
guide that deal on an interna-
tional scale with the world’s best
extra virgin olive oils, providing
information about the sector and
directing readers towards quality.
It is also an international compe-
tition involving an assessment
of olive oils by a panel of expert
tasters coordinated by Marco
Oreggia, where tasters follow
strictly controlled tasting proce-
dures.
Giulio Bertrand, owner of the
Somerset West farm, went to
Rome to accept the award and
commented: “In last year’s Flos
Olei we were excited to achieve
97 out of 100 for the fourth year
in a row. Being one of only 11 oil
producers in the world to achieve
98/100, the highest score ever

The history of Haute Cabriere dates
back to 22 December 1694 when the
French Huguenot Pierre Jourdan, was
granted a piece of land in Olifantshoek
- today known as Franschhoek – which
he decided to name after his home
town, Cabriere.
In the early 1980’s Achim von Arnim
– then still Cellar Master at Boschen-
dal – purchased a portion of this land,
with his vision firmly set on the idea
of producing wines in the style of the
Champagne region. Following the tradi-
tion of the famous French Champagne
houses, he planted the noble cultivars of
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to produce
his first Champagne-equivalent, known
in South Africa as Cap Classique, and
named this wine in honour of the original
pioneer, Pierre Jourdan.
A few years later, Achim discovered
another piece of land – now known
as Haute Cabriere - on the slopes of
the Franschhoek Mountains, which
reflected a similar type of terroir which
he had encountered during his time as
a student in Burgundy. He fondly recalls
the day that the clay of Haute Cabrière
stuck to the soles of his Levi’s boots in
exactly the same way it did when he
worked the vineyards of Burgundy. To
him, this offered the inspiration to utilize
the potential of these perfect growing
conditions by producing a Burgun-
dian-styled Pinot Noir and a blend of
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
And so, from its humble origins, the
venture which until then, Achim had
pursued more or less on the sideline
to his daytime position at Boschendal,
grew to encompass a beautifully serene
underground cellar built into the side of
Franschhoek Mountain, which Achim
opened exactly 300 years after Pierre
Jourdan had been granted Cabriere –
on 22 December 1994.
With Achim’s wife Hildegard hailing
from the famous German Mosel wine
region, the passion for wine runs in the
family, and it is only natural that their
eldest son Takuan works closely with his
father in the creation of Haute Cabriere’s
fine wines.
Achim and Takuan share the funda-
mental wine growing philosophy of “sun,
soil, vine, man”, which revolves around
the perfect harmony of nature’s ele-
ments coming together to create magic
– with man playing only the role of a
respectful conductor in creating a sum
that’s bigger than its parts.
Today, the range encompasses two
Cap Classiques – the Pierre Jourdan
Brut and Pierre Jourdan Belle Rose, as
well as a selection of still wines – the
Pierre Jourdan Tranquille, the Haute
Cabriere Chardonnay Pinot Noir, the
Haute Cabriere Pinot Noir and the revo-
lutionary Haute Cabriere Unwooded
Pinot Noir. All wines are fantastically
versatile, to be enjoyed on their own or
with a variety of different foods.
Situated alongside Franschhoek
Pass, Haute Cabriere offers magnifi-
cent views over the Franschhoek Valley.
The Tasting Room offers guided cellar
tours Mondays – Fridays at 11h00 and
15h00, and a Cellar Master’s Tour on
Saturdays at 11h00, which is hosted by
either Achim or Takuan von Arnim. For
lunch and dinner, Haute Cabriere Cellar
Restaurant & Terrace offers a delightful
a la carte menu with full and half por-
tions, as well as a variety of pairing
menus – including a wide selection of
vegetarian options. Between 15h00
and 19h00, guests can enjoy the “Deli-
cious Little Things” menu served on the
terrace as the perfect accompaniment
to a relaxed glass of wine. Wherever
possible, produce is grown either on
Haute Cabriere itself, or sourced within
the Franschhoek Valley.

bestowed on an oil by a top international
panel of judges, makes me very proud to
bring this award home to South Africa”.
The other ten farms that achieved the
same score are in Spain (two), Italy
(seven) and Chile (one).
Bertrand believes that the combina-
tion of Italian trees and expertise, an
exceptional South African terroir and a
rigid approach to quality at every stage
of production has senabled Morgenster
to achieve this level of excellence.
The Estate’s wines and olive products
are exported around the world.

The Helderberg Rugby Club in Strand
remains one of the few community club
teams that compete at the highest level
of club rugby. Their community driven
projects receive a high priority of club
involvement and participation. This year
the club will present the Extreme sevens
tournament where the winner takes it all.
The Club will host the 10th annual
7’s tournament on 28 February and 1
March, 2014 at Charles Morkel Stadium,
Strand. This year the tournament will be
Extreme - with 52 teams competing
including 16 primary schools, 16 high
schools, 16 senior and 4 women teams.
The art exhibition entitled ‘FUSION II’, meaning working
together to create something new, is what three friends
with a diverse but complimentary artistic history, have
decided to do.
The exhibition features Sue Akerman, Gill Gerhardt and
Bruce Attwood. The three notable artists from the Pieter-
maritzburg area initially debuted at the Tatham Gallery in
Kwa-Zulu Natal to great critical acclaim and much audi-
ence enjoyment.
Each of these three artists brings a unique area of exper-
tise to this collaboration. Attwood is primary a woodturner
and printmaker, with a remarkable capacity for inventive
engineering and attention to detail. Akerman is known for
her delicate fibre art pieces and Gerhardt for her use of
surface decoration in glass etching, blasting and in the
medium of printmaking. The result is a number of outra-
geously different furniture pieces.
The three artists decided on the spur of the moment, not
only to collaborate in a group project, but to exhibit within
a year. They would brainstorm, with Bruce beginning the
skeleton of the design and handing it back to Sue or Gill.
Some pieces travelled backwards and forwards between
the three artists several times before they were declared
‘finished’. The final pieces are playful and complex, with
each requiring individual attention from its viewers.
This exhibition can be seen from 2 until 27 February
2014 at IS ART at Le Quartier François, Franschhoek.

RUGBY THAT ROCKS IS BACK
Back your Boytjies!
The 2014 Varsity Rugby season kicks-
off in grand style at De Zalze Golf Club
on Monday, 3 February with the FNB
Varsity Cup moving into its seventh year
of existence with some exciting innova-
tions planned for this year.
The Varsity Cup will lend itself to
further refereeing experimentation and
is set to employ two referees in each of
its fixtures. The referees will operate in
tandem during the match, with both able
to roam the field in order to police the off-
side line, the breakdown, and forward
passes. The organisers have again
opened the competition to experimenta-
tion with specially designed jerseys for
props (in the Varsity Cup and Shield).
In another innovation a new “Free
Catch Rule” will come into play, adding
to the free-flowing style of rugby
employed in the various tournaments.
A player can now mark the ball - when
catching a kick on the full - anywhere on
the field and not just in his own 22. The
referees, however, will play advantage
with any catch from the air and will be
able to bring the catcher’s team back if
they do not get advantage and award a
free-kick to them.
At present, 20 of the 23 players in the
match-day squads are required to be
full-time students. The FNB Varsity Cup
presented by Steinhoff International will
be phasing out all non-students during
this season ahead of the 2015 competi-
tion.
The FNB NMMU Madibaz will host
the FNB Maties in Port Elizabeth on
Monday, February 3, 2014 at 16h45,
in the first of two televised matches in
Round One.

The University’s Welcoming Pro- gramme started with the official welcoming event at the Danie Craven Stadium at Coetzenburg during which the Rector, Prof Russel Botman, wel- comed first-year students and their parents. According to Prof Botman the Univer- sity recently received confirmation that Stellenbosch is the best in the country in terms of student success rate. The latest information is that 84.9% of stu- dents passed their modules - the best they have ever done and higher than anywhere in the country. Continue Reading page 4

She is still in a critical but stable condi- tion. She was previously placed in strict isolation and is now in contact isolation. Millions of reviews Nothing but the best! Western Cape tourism showed sig- nificant growth as the area continues to welcome local and international visitors for the summer season. International tourist are laughing all the way to South Africa with the Rand plunging to a five year record low. It has now become more affordable for more foreigners to come to South Africa. The weak Rand is drawing few complaints from America at R11.09 to the $1.00, Europe, at R15.16 to the €1.00, and tourists from the United Kingdom at R18.27 to the £1.00 (Forex - 26 January 2014). These foreign visitors have much more spending money available for accommodation, sightseeing entertain- ment and tours thereby permitting them to extend their stay, while visiting the Western Cape. The National Institute for Communica- ble Diseases (NICD) has warned people who love spending time outdoors to protect themselves against tick bites. What is Congo Fever? It is con- tracted through the bite of an infected tick, usually the bontpootluise (Hya- lomma tick), via the exposure to blood infected animals such as cattle and sheep or after contact with the blood of an infected patient. this year," said the City’s mayoral com- mittee member for tourism, events and marketing, Grant Pascoe. Apart from the procession visitors had the opportunity to wine and dine in the streets of Stellen- bosch as well as in true European-style in the historic Church Street. The Pick n Pay Women’s 5 kilometre Walk took the streets of Stellenbosch in aid of breast cancer awareness and prevention. This initiative formed part of PinkDrive, an organisation that offers free breast cancer screening in local communities. For the duration of the festival, wine lovers will also be able to enjoy Winery Experiences at about eighty wineries in the region, while the American Express Wine & Dine programme will feature some of the top award-winning restau- rants in the Stellenbosch region offering special festival menus and promotions. The opportunity to come face-to-face with a prehistoric, cold-blooded creature, one that is sure to get your heart racing! The Cango Wildlife Ranch, in the unique Karoo town of Oudtshoorn, presents its world-class natural encounters-programs, a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity for people to interact with incredible animals; such as the Cheetah, Tiger, Lemur, Giant Tegu, Cubs and Reptiles. In 2004, the owners of the ranch, Andrew and Glenn Eriksen, decided it was time to help change people’s perceptions of another animal, the enormous and feared Nile Crocodile. In 2006 they implemented Croc-cage diving, a world first in both adventure and conservation activities. Once your ticket is purchased, you climb into the steel reinforced cage and are slowly lowered into the water. You see the predator as clearly as it sees you! The cage is lowered next to the crocodile to ensure a really close view, close enough to count their teeth! You will be in safe, but in scary waters, as the underwater photog- raphers capture every moment on camera. The intimidating experience of looking into the crocs eyes; not quite knowing how safe you are, or if he is going to strike … it is a truly humbling experience. They are fed three times a week, and the feeding times never coincide with a dive. The whole goal is to view them in their relax surroundings, completely unhindered! Cango Wildlife Ranch is on a par with some of the best animal experiences in the world and is one of only four facilities in Africa to have obtained accreditation from the Standards-Body in the zoological industry. The guided tour is on average an hour long, and an extra 15-20 minutes can be added per encounter. Cango Wildlife Ranch, Oudtshoorn - Croc Cage Diving Explore Brandy Country With a long, rich history in brandy making dating back to 1672, the world’s finest brandies emanate from South Africa. Rooted in age-old traditions, South African brandy is one of the country’s most iconic products; and is a most-loved distilled drink. The Western Cape Brandy Route and the R62 Brandy Route, might just be the only brandy routes in the world. For wine lovers to go on a brandy journey is not such a big leap: brandy is made from wine after all. The Western Cape Brandy Route leads you through the heart of fine wine country: Stellenbosch, Paarl, Fran- schhoek, Wellington and the new high-lying Elgin area. For an evocative introduction to and overview of the art and science of more than three centuries of Cape brandy making, begin your journey in Stellenbosch, at Van Ryn’s Brandy Cellar. A guided tour, comparative style tasting and brandy- and-chocolate pairing unlock a cornucopia of delectable sights, sounds, smells and tastes. Move on to the renowned red wine cellar Kaapzicht which produces a pure potstill brandy. Louiesenhof winemaker, Stefan Smit learnt from veteran distiller Jos le Roux to make his Marbonne Potstill containing brandy aged for up to 16 years in oak. Beautifully restored 1712 Uitkyk, offers a 10 Year Old, and modern Tokara makes a rich pure pot-still five-year-old from fruit off 30-year-old vines. Paarl brings you Backsberg, the home of the eponymous Sidney Back brandies. Historic Laborie’s Alambic five-year-old brandy comes in an elegant, embossed 500ml bottle and Venerable Nederburg has resurrected its recently discovered history of brandy making with its Potstilled Solera. In Wellington the meticulously restored three-centuries-old farm De Compagnie, specialises in exclusive pure pot-still brandies. Historic 17th-century French Hugue- not farm Versailles offers carefully crafted brandies under the Savingnac label. Across the Hottentots Holland mountain range among Elgin’s new cool-climate vineyards lies the elegant Oude Molen Distillery, honouring in name the ‘father’ of South African brandy, Frenchman Renée Santhagen, who introduced the Cognaçaise method of copper pot double distillation here in the early 1900s. Van Ryn’s Brandy Cellar, Stellenbosch Thierry and Natascha, his partner, both in their capacity as international Travel and Tourist Guides, provide a professional service according to European standards to tourist travelling to Cape Town for business or pleasure. It is their goal to provide tourists with unforgettable memories of Cape Town, the Garden Route, the wild life as well as the picturesque nature. Natascha speaks 6 languages fluently. You can make your decision based on airfare, the number of flight connections and departure time. Flying internationally is a whole new ball game since there are various aspects to consider which are departure and arrival times, non-stop flights, connecting flights, safety and many more. Here are some facts you should consider when choosing which International Airline you wish to fly with on long-haul routes. Airfare - Price is indeed the biggest factor in deciding which airline you wish to fly with. It is important to compare airfare prices. However, it is not always a wise decision to consider the lowest airfare. Sometimes it is feasible to pay a little more for what you want. Here is a list of fees you need to investigate to make sure that they are included in your airfare before making your final booking: excess baggage, seat selection, food & beverage, cancellation/rebooking fees, taxes and surcharges. Safety - Have you ever wondered how safety conscious the airline is you are about to board? The FederalAviationAdministration (FAA) updates the list of airlines and their compliance level each month. The website, airlineratings.com rates 425 airlines around the world to help travelers choose a carrier with the best safety record. Safety ratings are based on the following international certifica- tion standards: airworthiness, operations, air navigation services, licensing, safety records, and product ratings that include seating, in-flight enter- tainment, meals, beds, blankets, pillows and the carrier’s website. Non-Stop Flights - It is ideal to find an airline that travels to your international destination without any stop-overs. However, it is not always possible to fly direct, therefore you should find an airline partner that travels to your destina- tion. Non-stop flights are usually more expensive, but will get you to your destination earlier. If you decide to make a stop-over, make sure you have enough time between your connecting flights. Airline On-time record & dependability The last thing you want while on vacation is to have your flight cancelled or delayed for hours or days. Verify the on-time statistics of the airline. FlightStats.com can not only give you on-time performance and cancellation statistics for most major airlines worldwide, but can also supply information for specific flights, delays, routes, times, dates and even weather updates. In-flight entertainment & connectivity (IFE&C) For some travellers this is the most important consideration when flying internationally. The improvement of wireless connectivity and the increasing trend of passengers using their own personal devices such as iPhones, iPads, and tablets, have dramatically changed the face of the in-flight passenger experience. In-flight entertain- ment can include movies, satellite TV, cable TV, music videos, radio, games and Google Maps. Restrictions and allowances - Before con- firming your booking, you should verify the airline’s luggage restrictions on checked-in baggage, hand baggage and seat selection. Airline Frequent Flyer Program - Determine if you can earn extra miles on the airfare you’re paying by joining a frequent flyer Program with the airline. Most airlines give suitable fare to enable you to earn miles. Airline loyalty - If you have airline loyalty the departure time, flight time, connections and price would not matter to you when booking a flight. Airline loyalty can also include better service, boarding the plane first, upgrades and seating with expanded leg space. Airline cancellation and re-booking policy - You should review the airlines cancellation and re-booking policies before you fly. It may be worth your while to pay more for your ticket if they have a better policy available. Enjoy your flight!

Continue Reading page 11 The Newspaper challenged Legends Studio, Somerset West to prove credibil- itythroughtheuseoftheirLipoCavitation Program. The Newspaper appointed their candidate in the Program, called LipoMan to be monitored from the beginning of the treatment. Legends suggested that a minimum of 6 sessions is required to see positive results. After the sessions a report will be published with regard to the success achieved by LipoMan. The Newspaper is happy to report LipoMan started the Lipo Cavitation treatment on 3 January 2014. Three body measurements were taken at the beginning of each of the 6 treatments. The first was the upper waist, followed by the naval waist, and lastly the lower waist, a section heavily impacted with fat deposits. Sessions were conducted every alter- native day. Before each session the Pomegranate Restaurant situated on the Vergenoegd Wine Estate pre- sents its patrons the flair of fine dining in casual style. It’s enjoying lunch in the ambiance of the historical 1773 Manor House surrounded by beautiful views of the winemaking Estate, mountains and vineyards which takes any visitor back to the days of yesteryear. Pomegranate is Michael Israel’s trade- mark on Fine Dining with a difference. He has been in the trade for many years and 2014 is the 20th anniversary of Pomegranate Restaurant. Not only is Michael the Executive Owner Chef, but also the Sommelier. All dishes are finely paired with a wine that blends in with the choice of dish. The Newspaper was privileged to share in the taste of dishes prepared with the best ingredients. The menu is simple, but the fusion flavours speaks another language. The Gemsbok Carpaccio cured with rock salt, juniper berry, cumin seed and lemon zest, rocket leaves and finished with drunken pecorino cheese, mustard and red wine vinaigrette is a “must” on the Starter list. On the other hand, the Tomato Tart is to die for. This delicious homemade puff pastry is topped with pitted and skinned tomato, a little butter and cream, oven baked and garnished with fresh basil and chives freshly picked from the garden. The Runner Duck White wine is perfectly paired with therapist recorded the three waist meas- urements and then actively worked the defined area. During each of the 6 ses- sions of 20 minutes a high frequency probe was moved over the abdomen area to burst fat. At the end of the first 6 sessions The Newspaper is happy to confirm that the waist measurement of LipoMan showed a remarkable reduc- tion of 8 cm. (went down two notches in belt size) What is Lipo Cavitation? It is a high frequency sound wave which penetrates the fat cell and even- tually bursts the fat cell. The fat is filtered through the lymph and the liver and excreted through the bowel. It is recommended that 1.5 litres of water is consumed several hours prior to and after each session. This plays a major role in the success of the treatment. Legends has found that cavitation is excellent in kick-starting a persons weight loss programme. It’s also important not to indulge in food that will negatively impact the Cavitation process. It is furthermore recorded that LipoMan adapted his daily food consumption, removed starch from all menus, and reduced all alcohol intake to as little as two glasses of wine con- sumed over a 14 day period. The Newspaper will be back to report on LipoMan’s treatment in the next edition after the second 6 sessions. the tart. The Duck Leg and Breast Confit, is well cooked and served with a crispy finish, dressed with a pomegranate white wine jus and paired with Vergenoegd Caber- net Sauvignon 2007. The Eland Fillet, a Superior meat as a game choice is Char grilled, finished in the oven, dressed with a chocolate chilli red wine jus and garnished with coppa. If you fancy South East Asian dishes, the Warm Seafood Salad and Vegetar- ian dish will be the right choice. The Chocolate Pancakes was the dish of the day! It is recom- mended that healthy adults who drink Adapt a healthy lifestyle ( Continued from page 10) This is the time of the year where thousands of people are enjoying the summer sun at the most beautiful beaches. However the sun is also dan- gerous. The UV Index in our area is between 9 - 11+ which means the sun strength is very strong and the skin burns quickly. One of the most important causes of skin cancer is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun or sunbeds. What is ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun? Ultraviolet is part of the electromag- netic (light) spectrum that reaches the earth from the sun. It has wavelengths shorter than visible light, making it invis- ible to the naked eye. The ultraviolet (UV) radiation that affects the skin is classified as: UVA, (long wave) and UVB (short wave). UVA and UVB penetrate the atmosphere and play an important role in conditions such as skin aging, eye damage, and skin cancers. Facts on UVA (Long wave) - UVA is the longest of the UV rays, penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and plays a major role in skin aging, skin wrinkling and skin cancer. - UVA rays account for up to 95% of the UV radiation reaching the earth. - UVA is the dominant tanning ray, causing damage to the skin’s DNA. - Tanning booths or Tan Cans release 12 times more UVA as the sun. People using them are 2.5 more times likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma, and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma. - Less intense than UVB. - Penetrates the skin more than UVB. - Play major part in skin wrinkling. - Penetrates glass and clouds. PAGE 11 Be SunSmart and avoid skin cancer alcohol should limit their daily intake to two or fewer servings per day. Enjoy life - Slowdown from your hectic lifestyle and enjoy life. Take time to enjoy whatever you are doing, spend time outdoors to appreciate nature, disconnect from your laptop and iPhone, spend time with friends and family, drive slower and stop multitasking by focusing on one thing at a time. You don’t have to make all these changes at once! Achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is an ongoing process! Facts on UVB (Short wave) UVB is responsible for burning, tanning, accelerating the skin aging and also plays a key role in the development of skin cancer. UVB varies by season, location and time of day. - Cause of reddening and sunburn. - Damage the skins epidermis layers. - UVB does not penetrate glass.

LIFESTYLE Cellar Masters of the Month Achim & Takuan von Arnim THE NEWSPAPER Achim von Arnim Morgenster Extra Virgin Olive Oil achieves Top Score Morgenster Extra Virgin Olive Oil was awarded the top score of 98 points out of 100 in the Flos Olei 2014 competition which assesses the world’s best olive oils. The Estate also received the “Made with Love” award in the section listing, the world’s 20 best farms in the accompanying Flos Olei 2014 - a guide to the world of extra virgin olive oil. Flos Olei 2014 is an annual guide that deal on an interna- tional scale with the world’s best extra virgin olive oils, providing information about the sector and directing readers towards quality. It is also an international compe- tition involving an assessment of olive oils by a panel of expert tasters coordinated by Marco Oreggia, where tasters follow strictly controlled tasting proce- dures. Giulio Bertrand, owner of the Somerset West farm, went to Rome to accept the award and commented: “In last year’s Flos Olei we were excited to achieve 97 out of 100 for the fourth year in a row. Being one of only 11 oil producers in the world to achieve 98/100, the highest score ever Giulio Bertrand, with his 2014 Flos Olei award PAGE 13 The history of Haute Cabriere dates back to 22 December 1694 when the French Huguenot Pierre Jourdan, was granted a piece of land in Olifantshoek - today known as Franschhoek – which he decided to name after his home town, Cabriere. In the early 1980’s Achim von Arnim – then still Cellar Master at Boschen- dal – purchased a portion of this land, with his vision firmly set on the idea of producing wines in the style of the Champagne region. Following the tradi- tion of the famous French Champagne houses, he planted the noble cultivars of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to produce his first Champagne-equivalent, known in South Africa as Cap Classique, and named this wine in honour of the original pioneer, Pierre Jourdan. A few years later, Achim discovered another piece of land – now known as Haute Cabriere - on the slopes of the Franschhoek Mountains, which reflected a similar type of terroir which he had encountered during his time as a student in Burgundy. He fondly recalls the day that the clay of Haute Cabrière stuck to the soles of his Levi’s boots in exactly the same way it did when he worked the vineyards of Burgundy. To him, this offered the inspiration to utilize the potential of these perfect growing conditions by producing a Burgun- dian-styled Pinot Noir and a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. And so, from its humble origins, the venture which until then, Achim had pursued more or less on the sideline to his daytime position at Boschendal, grew to encompass a beautifully serene underground cellar built into the side of Franschhoek Mountain, which Achim opened exactly 300 years after Pierre Jourdan had been granted Cabriere – on 22 December 1994. With Achim’s wife Hildegard hailing from the famous German Mosel wine region, the passion for wine runs in the family, and it is only natural that their eldest son Takuan works closely with his father in the creation of Haute Cabriere’s fine wines. Achim and Takuan share the funda- mental wine growing philosophy of “sun, soil, vine, man”, which revolves around the perfect harmony of nature’s ele- ments coming together to create magic – with man playing only the role of a respectful conductor in creating a sum that’s bigger than its parts. Today, the range encompasses two Cap Classiques – the Pierre Jourdan Brut and Pierre Jourdan Belle Rose, as well as a selection of still wines – the Pierre Jourdan Tranquille, the Haute Cabriere Chardonnay Pinot Noir, the Haute Cabriere Pinot Noir and the revo- lutionary Haute Cabriere Unwooded Pinot Noir. All wines are fantastically versatile, to be enjoyed on their own or with a variety of different foods. Situated alongside Franschhoek Pass, Haute Cabriere offers magnifi- cent views over the Franschhoek Valley. The Tasting Room offers guided cellar tours Mondays – Fridays at 11h00 and 15h00, and a Cellar Master’s Tour on Saturdays at 11h00, which is hosted by either Achim or Takuan von Arnim. For lunch and dinner, Haute Cabriere Cellar Restaurant & Terrace offers a delightful a la carte menu with full and half por- tions, as well as a variety of pairing menus – including a wide selection of vegetarian options. Between 15h00 and 19h00, guests can enjoy the “Deli- cious Little Things” menu served on the terrace as the perfect accompaniment to a relaxed glass of wine. Wherever possible, produce is grown either on Haute Cabriere itself, or sourced within the Franschhoek Valley. More information is available on www.cabriere.co.za bestowed on an oil by a top international panel of judges, makes me very proud to bring this award home to South Africa”. The other ten farms that achieved the same score are in Spain (two), Italy (seven) and Chile (one). Bertrand believes that the combina- tion of Italian trees and expertise, an exceptional South African terroir and a rigid approach to quality at every stage of production has senabled Morgenster to achieve this level of excellence. The Estate’s wines and olive products are exported around the world.

This year the tournament will be Extreme - with 52 teams competing including 16 primary schools, 16 high schools, 16 senior and 4 women teams. The art exhibition entitled ‘FUSION II’, meaning working together to create something new, is what three friends with a diverse but complimentary artistic history, have decided to do. The exhibition features Sue Akerman, Gill Gerhardt and Bruce Attwood. The three notable artists from the Pieter- maritzburg area initially debuted at the Tatham Gallery in Kwa-Zulu Natal to great critical acclaim and much audi- ence enjoyment. Each of these three artists brings a unique area of exper- tise to this collaboration. Attwood is primary a woodturner and printmaker, with a remarkable capacity for inventive engineering and attention to detail. Akerman is known for her delicate fibre art pieces and Gerhardt for her use of surface decoration in glass etching, blasting and in the medium of printmaking. The result is a number of outra- geously different furniture pieces. The three artists decided on the spur of the moment, not only to collaborate in a group project, but to exhibit within a year. They would brainstorm, with Bruce beginning the skeleton of the design and handing it back to Sue or Gill. Some pieces travelled backwards and forwards between the three artists several times before they were declared ‘finished’. The final pieces are playful and complex, with each requiring individual attention from its viewers. This exhibition can be seen from 2 until 27 February 2014 at IS ART at Le Quartier François, Franschhoek. • 16. RUGBY THAT ROCKS IS BACK Back your Boytjies! The 2014 Varsity Rugby season kicks- off in grand style at De Zalze Golf Club on Monday, 3 February with the FNB Varsity Cup moving into its seventh year of existence with some exciting innova- tions planned for this year. The Varsity Cup will lend itself to further refereeing experimentation and is set to employ two referees in each of its fixtures. The referees will operate in tandem during the match, with both able to roam the field in order to police the off- side line, the breakdown, and forward passes. The organisers have again opened the competition to experimenta- tion with specially designed jerseys for props (in the Varsity Cup and Shield). In another innovation a new “Free Catch Rule” will come into play, adding to the free-flowing style of rugby employed in the various tournaments. A player can now mark the ball - when catching a kick on the full - anywhere on the field and not just in his own 22. The referees, however, will play advantage with any catch from the air and will be able to bring the catcher’s team back if they do not get advantage and award a free-kick to them. At present, 20 of the 23 players in the match-day squads are required to be full-time students. The FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International will be phasing out all non-students during this season ahead of the 2015 competi- tion. The FNB NMMU Madibaz will host the FNB Maties in Port Elizabeth on Monday, February 3, 2014 at 16h45, in the first of two televised matches in Round One.
