over 400 islands. In this land of peace and tranquility, it is difficult to imagine Denmark once
spawned the formidable, seafaring Vikings.
Tourists will find a variety of delights to explore in Denmark. With its scenic villages, castles, ring
forts, and monuments, sandy beaches, coves and fjords, Denmark is a place of striking beauty. The
best time to visit is August, although anytime April through October, there is nice weather.
Founded in 1167, and located on the islands of Zealand and Amager, the capital of Denmark is
Copenhagen. Known as the city of copper roofs and spires, Copenhagen enchants visitors with
everything from the Little Mermaid at the harbor entrance, to its cobble stoned streets. The city is a
treasure trove of old buildings, parks, gardens, fountains and squares, not to mention the world
famous amusement park, Tivoli, which is open from late April to mid-September. On top of that,
tourists will find a plethora of excellent eateries and shopping opportunities, and to help tourists get
around the city, there is an inexpensive train network.
Copenhagen offers tourists a wide variety of tours, including the Vikingland Tour, which takes you to
the Viking Ship Museum. There is the Royal Tour, to the Christianborg Palace, as well as a tour of
the famous Carlsberg brewery, and these are just a few.
Despite the fascinating adventures offered by its capital city, Denmark has a wealth of tourist
delights. At Aalborg, visitors will find one of the biggest Viking burial grounds, along with the largest
Renaissance buildings in Denmark. At ?rhus, a collection of sixty-plus 17th and 18th century
buildings, gathered from all over Denmark, have been recreated and set onto a beautiful landscaped.

2. The 'Garden of Denmark', Funen, is another must-see on any itinerary. Here visitors will find some of
Denmark's most delightful countryside, not to mention castles, churches and manors, all set in
ancient parks and gardens. Odense, which is the main city of Funen, was named after the Norse god
Oden. It is the third largest city in Denmark and has often been called the 'Capital of Fairytales'. It is
also the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875), and every July and August, Odense has
a festival to celebrate his works. Visitors can tour his childhood home and the Hans Christian
Andersen Museum. Another recent attraction in Funen is the Naturama. Opened in 2005, it offers
tourists three levels of multimedia, natural history displays.
Knuthenborg Park is well worth the trip to Lolland. This is Denmark's largest park, and it has over
500 species of trees, flowers and plants, and also contains a safari park. In Bornholm, tourists will
find Hammershus. Built in 1260, it is Denmark's largest castle ruin. Another tourist highlight is
Elsinore. This is where the old fortress of Kronborg is located. The setting for Shakespeare's Hamlet
is considered one of the most imposing structures in Scandinavia.
