- 4. EnviroAction Group This year we have been finding out about: Destruction of the rainforest
- 6. Rainforest animals are losing their homes
- 7. Is it such a big problem? Every two seconds an area of forest the size of a football pitch is destroyed.

- 9. The rainforest is being cleared for wood we use in our garden furniture and palm oil we use in our foods

- 12. Over the past 200 years, 413 species have been lost in England. Mainly due to changes to land from farming and house building. Also pollution and pesticides. Species extinct from England Birds: 7 species of bird have become extinct in England in the last 200 years Great bustard became extinct in UK in 1833 Bees: 22 species of bee have become extinct in England in the last 200 years
- 13. Beavers are being re-introduced For the first time since they were hunted to extinction in the 1700s, England has a wild beaver population - and they are here in Devon, on the River Otter!

- 20. We have been taking action! We have adopted a Mountain Gorilla
- 21. We have adopted a Mountain Gorilla The mountain gorilla is critically endangered with only around 880 left in the wild. Our money is used for: •Training rangers to remove traps set for animals •Protecting gorilla habitat •Training rangers to protect baby gorillas against poaching

- 26. Petition to save the pygmy sloth The pygmy three-toed sloth is found in a tiny area of red mangrove forests on an island in Panama. It rapidly evolved a much smaller body size in its short 8,900 years of isolation from mainland species. QuickTime™ and a H.264 decompressor are needed to see this picture.

- Tom: This year we have been finding out about destruction of the rainforest.
- Poppy: The rainforest is being destroyed.
- Sienna: And thousands of species of rainforest animals are losing their homes.
- Sebastian: Every two seconds an area of forest the size of a football pitch is destroyed.
- Tom: The rainforest is being chopped down to provide the wood we use in our garden furniture and for palm oil we use in our foods.
- Sebastian: Together we can stop deforestation - here’s an example from Australia.
- Sienna: We have also been looking at animals that have become extinct in the UK.
- Poppy: Over the past 200 years, 413 species have been lost in England.
- Morgan: But all is not lost! Some species are being brought back to live in the wild in England. Including the beavers now living wild in Devon.
- Zeb: We have also being finding out about the impact of plastic in the sea.
- Tamsin: Plastics can kill animals!
- Zeb: What a mess!
- Morgan: Plastics are destroying the sea bed!

- Tamsin: We are taking action! Together we have adopted a Mountain Gorilla.
- Tara: There are only 880 left in the wild. Our money pays for a ranger to protect our mountain gorilla called Ihoho.
- William: Some of us took part in Earth Hour.
- William: We signed a petition to save the pygmy sloth.
- Jasmin: There are only 70 pygmy sloths left in the wild.
- Jasmin: Here are some rescued sloths.
- Tara: We sent a letter to the Prime Minister and received a reply.
- Tara: And some of us took part in the estuary clean up.
